    If you wanted a zone of ambiguity than why would you have the ambiguity listed for that node? It seems defeating to the idea of hiding your location.

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  3 місяці тому

      This feature is not about completely hiding your location but making it less precise. There's still ambiguity in what is shared. If a user is wanting to hide their location, they're able to do that by disabling sharing of location.

    If you could either comment or do a video about neighbor info or just all settings, that would be fantastic, I read the documentation and it doesn't specify if it would find nodes that are not hidden keep up the amazing work team. What you guys are doing is awesome

      Be sure to check out our "Month of Modules" playlist for some of our modules. I'm currently trying to persuade Ben to do another month with some more modules including the neighbor info. Stay tuned!

    Thanks folks, I cant wait to test it out, few nodes are on its way to me. I live in city with 1mil population and there's no node on the map, I wonder if its a reality or just all locations "beacons" are turned off.

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  4 місяці тому +1

      It's definitely possible there are no nodes, but it's also equally possible that those that are using Meshtastic do so privately. We have a lot of community members that do not use the default ("public") settings.

    I'm new to Meshtastic. This fancy map on iOS looks great, I looked into ATAK with Meshtastic. Is there currently a way to have offline maps and GPS locations?
    my ideal set up would be Meshtastic on Linux with Raspberry pi and a screen with offline maps. anything like this exists or should I start working on it myself?

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  4 місяці тому

      Both the Android and iOS apps have the ability to use offline maps. For Android it's built into the map. For iOS you can share mbtiles to the app to use for offline.
      We do have Raspberry Pi support with specific LoRa hats. The documentation on that isn't currently posted to our site as we're still refining it but if you join our Discord you can check out the #linux-native channel to get info on setting it up.

    POS/Data is still only sent through channel ZERO correct?
    so make zero private channels, and then connect to 2nd/3rd channels

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  4 місяці тому

      Position is still only broadcast over your primary channel. However, if you enable "Allow Position Requests" on your secondary channels then position can be requested by others and sent over those channels but only with a request.

    What is the difference in this vs. position in settings?

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  4 місяці тому +1

      This allows you to control just how precise your position is sent out over the mesh, so it's used in conjunction.

    • @ManxMariner
      @ManxMariner 4 місяці тому +1

      @@Meshtastic does this control where you show up on the map?
      Also, I go the channels settings but options are grayed out.
      Is there anything that has to be turned on for this to work?
      Does it work if you don’t have an onboard gps but using phone location?

    • @fsbollox
      @fsbollox 4 місяці тому +1

      @@Meshtasticdoes this mean your location can be constantly related through mqtt

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes, this would control where you would show up on the map based on your precision level. In order to use this you need to be running version 2.2.24 on your device. Yes, your phone location data is just passed to the firmware to use as if it was a GPS source.

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  3 місяці тому +1

      @NRG23dom I'm not sure what you mean. Your position is sent out on the interval you have configured.

    I am still struggling to get position to work on iOS (app version 2.2.26 (1). Rak4631 now running 2.2.24 beta. I have iOS location to share while using app. I can see position updating in app settings. Share location ticked. In channel primary have pos enable ticked precise unticked slider set (although it seems to return to default 1.8). Setting position set to broadcast 5 mins and smart position checked. But I don’t see my position updating, it’s not on my map or seen by my other node.

    • @Meshtastic

      Try updating to the latest version of the app version 2.3.0. We've received reports this resolved the issue.

    What is the source of the position data? I’m assuming it’s whatever the device, such as a phone, provides through its API.

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  29 днів тому +1

      Correct, the data comes from whatever position source you are using for that device.

  • @odouroushouseant

    Shouldn't the zone of ambiguity be a rectangle instead of a circle?

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  Місяць тому

      GPS error is generally considered to be isotropic, meaning that the uncertainty in the position is roughly the same in all directions.

    • @odouroushouseant
      @odouroushouseant Місяць тому

      @@Meshtastic Yes, but this isn't GPS error. The actual GPS error is a few meters usually, sure let's say that's a circle. Then this operation cuts off bits for latitude (making vertical error bar) and then cuts off bits for longitude (makes a horizontal error bar). Stack your vertical error bar and your horizontal bar and you get a rectangle zone of ambiguity probably way way bigger than the small isotropic GPS error circle around your true location.

    Isn't the reported location still basically at the center of the circle?

    • @naomi-g
      @naomi-g 3 місяці тому

      No. It's somewhere in the circle - it works by reducing GPS precision.

    • @Cabinlab
      @Cabinlab 3 місяці тому

      Would be interesting to know how much actual variation there is. Since I have zero idea how it functions in Meshtastic, I remain curious.
      For instance, when turning on the GPS in my favorite mapping app (OruxMaps), it starts with a large circle on a map (similar to the video), then incrementally shrinks it as accuracy increases. But even the initial lower-accuracy plots end up with the center of the circle being very close (~10m) to the actual location. In that app, the size of the circle is determined by the probable accuracy with the currently acquired signals, then refines (shrinks) as probability increases.
      I guess what I'm saying is that in my observations, GPS is fairly accurate even with minimal data/signals/satellites.
      Know if there are discussions of this question in the Discord? I should probably learn up a little.

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  3 місяці тому +1

      GPS application will start with a broad area based on initial data and as it receives more it's able to refine it to pinpoint where you are located. This feature is essentially the opposite of that and we eliminate data that we pass on so that we can make the circle bigger and our actual location more ambiguous. It allows users to share a location without it having to be exact.
      Yes, there was quite a bit of discussion as this feature was developed and implemented. Feel free to join and ask question! :)
