    my team members don't want ham license and most of our teams have adopted caltopo but not ATAK. this provides the option I need. I'll be purchasing a few t-beam and setting this up over the next year. I hope to get our county SAR team on this system.

      Please let me know what you discover as I have been working on "Product testing" them for our volunteer SAR team. I wish we were using ATAK but it is too advanced for our non-tech volunteers.

    Great to know that things have continued to improve! One of the reasons I wanted to use meshtastic was for live tracking with ATAK. While that platform is FAR superior to CalTopo (formerly SARTopo), it is not as easy as CalTopo. Now that I know this is an option with CalTopo, I will try to get my Lilygo T-Beams working in CalTopo.
    I am quite well versed in CalTopo and improving in ATAK but still need to improve in my understanding of the T-Beam antenna options.
    @Meshtastic I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR YOUR WORK!!!!!!! As a volunteer SAR member in a remote area where there are no comms, Meshtastic is getting us closer to safer operations due to being able to communicate better than with just handheld radios.

    Finally got the nodes to populate on CalTopo.
    If there was a set wizard to stream line the setup process more people would use it!

      That'd be great! Hopefully someone in the community gets something going.

      @@Meshtastic Every SAR team in California is using CalTopo. If the integration was smoother I think many teams would be interested.
      I sent a message to the CalTopo support team to see if they had any interest in Meshtastic. If I don’t get a reply, I have the developer’s personal email. I will make some noise!

    Do you have to have a CalTopo Team subscription to use this solution?

    Thanks for the video however, I am stuck configuring CalTopo to receive the data. I have verified that my device is sending coordinates. I am stuck at is adding the code to the "caltopo property file" (from their instructions). I am opening the file with notepad and paste the code from CalTopo with serial port location updated. However, I am still not receiving the data in CalTopo. What am doing wrong? Do you have any tips?

      Were you able to get this figured out? If not, I would suggest joining our discord and someone can likely get you the information you need.

    Very interested in this. I have 3 t beams and have just started working with them. SAR teams here in michigan refuse to adopt APRS. I was hoping to clip t beams on their packs in lieu of them being proficient at Ham radio.
    I'll be reading about this serial port to caltopo integration 4 sure

      HAM is intimidating for folks who want to be in the woods. They (at least around me) think of HAM as sitting at a computer (think HAM shack). I have been testing the Meshtastic devices in rural (RURAL) Montana and am hoping that they keep improving as we have no good coms... Portable Kenwoods and Motorolas leave much to be desired here.
      For an example location google: "45.000000, -112.000000" go south until you find a house. Those coordinates are close to houses but if you go south you'll see what I mean by remote areas.
      Thank you for caring enough to try and help the SAR teams! Too many people think that they only need people who hike a lot. That is SO not true!

      If you are a HAM and understand Antenna's, Please let me know your thoughts on what antennas work the best with these Meshtastic T-Beams. I have heard many say that the antennas are not set for the right frequency ranges of the Devices. I'm not a HAM and don't understand antenna theory and don't know if the statements are accurate or not.

    • @TheWingnut58
      @TheWingnut58 9 місяців тому +1

      That statement is absolutely correct.....antennas should be tuned to resonance for the frequency they're being used on.
      Antennas are very easy to make, there are dozens of videos here on UA-cam and there's also an Android app (likely available for iOS as well) that will provide the exact length required for whatever frequency you choose.
      I hope that's helpful, good luck with your project!

    Are you aware of a good source for cases for the TBeam?

    • @Meshtastic
      @Meshtastic  Рік тому +2

      There are several community members that sell cases on Etsy. If you search "Meshtastic" you'll find numerous options. If you have a 3D printer and want to print your own, you can also search "Meshtastic" on Printables.

      I’ve purchased a few from Spec5 on EBay. The only mod I made was to drill a hole for an SMA connector to mount an Active GPS antenna. This improved the time-to-acquire and number of GPS satellites I pick up.
      Honestly, if starting over, I might have gone with T-Beam Supremes, if only for Antenna Placement.
      Recently, I purchased and have been using a T-Echo, which is working very well.
      I just need to figure out how to set up CalTopo for serial.
