I'mma need to know your beef with the Max Axel cleans. Here i was thinking it might be the best blend of full body strength, power, versatility of technique (depending on the ruleset), with an implement similar to the common barbell that most people can have a rough estimate of which to compare themselves to. If I was hosting a bare bones strength comp I'd have some variation of this as my marquee even honestly.

The big shift in strongman was the long-held dominance of the Scandinavians giving way to dominance by the Eastern Europeans like Big Z and Marius P. Today, quite a few Americans are on the scene, and the sport has shifted from repetitions and speed to static lifts. Brian Shaw and the Arnold Classic are responsible for that.

Back when strongman was shown in various different countries not just the US. Also, when it was on BBC it was so much better than it is now.

Really, I think the only one I disagree with a bit would be 2001. I'd swap Svend and Magnus, but that's really just on Magnus being more consistent overall. The Sweden grand prix finals was also as heavy as WSM that year, if not heavier, and he won it handily. Still, though, fair shouts all around!

Between 2002-2004 Mariusz arguably was the best strongman at the time with his WSM, ESM and grand prix wins. 2004 WSM he narrowly lost to Vasyl and Big Z. There were some remarks on comment sections that Vasyl got a false start on the yoke event, and if that didn't happen, the three of them would have tied in points with Mariusz winning the comp through event countback(deadlift, atlas stones what would have been super yoke).

It's a shame we never got to see more battles between Mariusz and Zydrunas between 2005 and 2009. 2005 WSM had many events which would have suited Big Z like Log Lift, Squat, and Fingals Fingers, while IFSA 2005 had good events for Mariusz like Husafel Stone carry, Farmers Walk, Conan's Circle and many others.
