It just makes it easier for genuine collectors to collect again without investors in it just for profit forcing the prices up on everything . What really killed it as well was when companies began grading video games and something worth a thousand became something worth a million virtually overnight . It became obvious these markets were just being manipulated by outside forces . Add to that failing economies plus the fact the next generation has as much interest in physical comics as our generations had in previous generations stamp collections say , and it was only a matter of time before the bubble burst .

I collected comic books when I was in middle school (1980 to 1984). I stopped prior to my first year in high school because comic books were for children. I was given one as a gift in 2003 and I bought Batman v Predator on ebay 3 years ago, to give as a gift. I don't collect anything but ammunition now.

I already own the Predator stories in omnibus form, but having an artist sign a copy of the specific comic they helped create---then getting it graded---feels no different from getting an autograph from your favorite celebrity for a movie or TV show at a convention. In fact, it might be be even better. Framing those graded slabs alongside the original comic book art from the same stories adds a unique and personal value. The true worth lies in the combination of the graded slab, the original art, and potentially the signature, depending on the artist.

your absolutely correct, I recently pulled my collection out to re bag and board found a lot of good keys thought about slabbing. not going to do it. love the ideas of collecting books not plastic.

The saddest thing is that no one takes the time to actually read the comics. I got hundreds of silver age comics and I'm proud to say I have read them ALL!

Personally, I don’t care about the grading system. I just like being able to put old comic books into a nice hard plastic case to protect them.

I don’t know you …so what I’m about to say is only my experience and opinion. Since Comic Books movies got popular and then in turn the medium got popular as well. With that comics have had a huge spotlight on them and so has the value of comics. For example at New York Comic Con 2024 2 fights broke out in the same line for a free Peach Momoko book they were Flippers. They make collecting not enjoyable. Because they were not NYCC 2024 to celebrate the hobby they were there to get a free book and then sell it. Also comic book creators won’t charge for a signature if it’s personalized. However, if you ask for it not to be they’ll charge 250 and up. Cause they know it’s getting sold. So yeah collectors are mad cause the flippers made it worse for people who live a writer or artist and what it for their personal collection. Those are my thoughts and options keep doing what you love and be easy 🤙🏽

I've got over 30k comics. Never had a single one graded. I don't care about the grade. I collected them because I enjoyed them. I stopped a few years back because of all the reboots and variant cover nonsense, not to mention the woke agenda pushing.

Collect what you love. I collect artist incentives because I view them as ART. Also, never slab. They make top-loaders for comics for a reason. Collect what you love. Love what you collect.

Silly Goose, you are talking about two different people. 1) Collectors 2) Investors Unfortunately the economy dictates the market for both, and the economy is the worse it has ever been.

I collect ancient history comics. I don’t know anyone else who does. It’s awesome being able to buy full runs of 50 books for $50.

Let’s test the $4000 book statement. Someone put $4000 into comics and I’ll put $4000 in stocks, mutual funds, and gold. After 5 years let’s see who made the better investment.

Totally agree with not grading comics unless they are tried and tested top 1% keys such as FF#1. That's the only time it makes sense, otherwise CGC is a waste of time and money. They've proven time and time again that they do not care about the hobby or the collectors, frequently returning books in worse condition than they received them (not to mention the regular Scandals of the Month involving inhouse fraud, inconsistent grading, poor quality of slabs, and on and on). A fledgling company would have gone bankrupt by this point. So yeah - check out recommendations for great writers, artists and iconic story arcs. Buy and read them, pass them on or keep them to read again or display proudly without the slab prison. Stick em in mylar sleeves so you can pull em out and enjoy them time and time again. Develop and expand your tastes so you know the good stuff, the stories that speak to you. That's what the hobby is for. And recommend the good stuff to the people you know who share that love of magnificent stories and art. Everything else is just chaff.

All I know is that whatever the younger generation is into will be the collectable of the future. If grading comics keeps kids from reading them then the hobby has a limited life expectancy.

I agree that grading is a scam... I'm 200 graded books deep and i can say that... buuut, it's nice when you have some good ones that look 🔥 af in the slab. But yeah, there are ways to protect them effectively without slapping slabs in em. Could've saved time, money, and bought some more big keys

You keep saying this is a scam but yet it's officially licensed by marvel with same day releases of the physical comics in digital form on veve. You are basically saying marvel is scaming its own readers and collector's. You went on his stream, that he was doing for an official marvel comic release to troll him. I can see why comic shops are closing down left and right because it's the same mentality it has been in comic collecting for decades a bunch of Gate keepers who don't like change and can't accept any other form or medium of collecting besides their own. You should try to welcome people who collect in a different way into the comic collecting world because some of these people will start collecting comics in the traditional way. The hobby is struggling in its current form and everyone knows it. The younger generation lives in a digital world and marvel and DC are trying to reach them where they spend most of their time online.This might not be how you collect but it is for thousands of people you might want to consider that before alienating a whole group of potential collectors.

Well, they aren’t worthless, but they’re definitely worth less.

The let's-make-a-deal guy/haggler is despised in my line of business. I get them all the time. They think just cause they buy ONE hat from my booth, they automatically assume they can get a discount when they want 2 more hats or other purchases. I already place offers when buying 3 or more, sometimes when purchasing 5 hats, but customers are ignorant in general how a individual has to struggle to keep their business up and running. I get it, we ALL want discounts, but not everything can be to your liking. That's just how business works. When you go and purchase gas for your car, do you haggle? No! You have to accept the price for what it is and move on. There can be things for cheap at other locations, this is true, but customers need to not give attitude to vendors when they are hustling to make ends meet. Just hear the price first. If you don't like the price, that's ok, you can move on. And if you like price and wanna buy, that's fine too. Just wait, listen and hope you know what you want comes at a cost.

People dont realise that slabbing is purely for preservation. Comics along with jazz are the only types of art originating from north america. Many comics are important pieces of americana. This with the fact that comics are not printed in s way that is meant to last is why you slab

Most filler issues are not that expensive. Completing runs is great fun, but yes doing whole runs only make sense if you want to read the story.

100% agree seems like now a days if you state your own opinion they want to black list you for it. the Comic book store owner his message was spot on! With the current state of entertainment i can say a lot of people agree with his message .

I completely agree with this Comic Book Store Owner. Why grade a reprinted comic that cost less CGC fees and expect to get an exorbitant amount of money for it because it s a 9.6. I never understood comic book grading . A lot of folks never even read the comic before they slabbed it up. They can’t tell you the story of what it’s about, but want thousands of dollars because it’s a 9.8 and “it’s what the market is asking.”

I lived through the sports trading card boom and bust of the early 1990's. One day I had all these cards that I'd paid a bunch of money to get with the idea they would be worth even more money in the future. Literally over night I was left with a bunch of worthless cardboard nicely arranged in plastic sleeves and hard cases. When I saw the CGC comics slabs I just laughed and said "nope!" Been there done that and already got screwed. The two things right now that are hurting comic book collectors who want to sell their comics for a profit, or even just to break even, are omnibuses and the economy. It's a buyers' market and buyer's don't feel like buying anything the way the economy is . And I hate to say it, but I don't see that getting any better over the next 4 years, at least.
