Todd MacFarlane doesn't care about hyping the secondary market; he doesn't see a penny from that. He cares about selling current monthlies. So of course he wants to create a sense of urgency -- its what gets the buyer to his LCS each week.
Now looking back, it was Todd McFarlane‘s Spawn “Road to 300” campaign that got me back into collecting monthly ongoing comics. I had collected from 1993-2001. When I saw the ad for “Spawn: Road to 300” then it hit me and I was like “man it’s been that long!” And I did not want to miss out on this Huge Party! Thanks to him and Spawn here I am 5 years later still collecting ongoing titles and it’s been an amazing journey🎉Best party ever! Keep in mind … I have Gambit (and the X-Men), Venom, and Batman over Spawn but it was Todds magic that did it ;)
I understand your interpretation of this, Sticky - but I interpreted as McFarlane saying by making comic collecting and comic reading look like a lot of fun (a party) it will cause people who are not currently involved in collecting or reading comics feel like they would be missing out by choosing not joining in on that fun (party). Maybe I’m the only one who interpreted it that way. I think that if he used the word “fear,” or conveyed a feeling of anxiety and/or was talking about comic sales (new or on the secondary market), I would lean more towards your interpretation. I also think that if he didn’t use the term “missing out,” it would add more weight behind my interpretation.
I like Todd. Any time I need a nostalgia kick I watch Stan Lee’s very old show, he featured many artists, had them draw on camera while talking. Great videos, learned quite a bit about Todd on that show. Very fun.
I get it but actually fomo in comics is one of the prime examples of it going wrong. So any variants, so many reboots, so many "big cross over events" is what is making a lot of people throw their hands up and say "fuck it, I'm out"
A fear can be overcome, it is also not mutually exclusive to comic book collecting. Fear is personal, and some are more susceptible to giving into their fears than others.
When I get FOMO in relation to comic books it has nothing to do with what most would think; has nothing to do with market or speculation. My concern is with collected editions and trades. Like most retail stores, many Local Comic Shops do not seem to keep the type of stock that they used to when it comes to trades. And I am in a big city (Houston, TX) that has some amazing comic book stores of various varieties in terms of quality of and type of comic shops. But when it comes to trade paperbacks...good luck. Feels like it started to happen around 2016-ish or so and only got worse post-COVID. Local Comic Shops barely order much unless it is on your pull list. Well guess what? Sometimes I don't realize I want a trade until well after its release date. And so in those cases I end up being screwed and the LCS is essentially screwed because here I want to give them my business and I cannot. Because of this it is like I fear a sense of FOMO on checking out trades sooner so that I don't run the risk of falling into the situation I just explained above.
There is no doubt a fear of missing out on fun, but what I think sellers often play to is a fear of missing out on profits (the assumption being that the hot 🔥item can be flipped or held and sold later for more). But what tends not to get mentioned is that for those exciting profits 💵 to be realized the FOMO buyer (and would-be seller) better have a ready steady customer base and/or an understanding of the difference between perceived value and lasting value, or a FOMO buyer and his money will be, as usual, parted.
on the most basic level, he seems glad to that hes drawing new people into the hobby. That is true. plus getting praise from todd is the best measure of success. Fomo is def at play. for me, one of the most enjoyable parts of the hobby is following my own excitement. if im hyped for something coming up (a movie or new comic event) i love to dive head first into that excitement and make it last. its not too hard to not make bad financial decisions based on excited.
McFarlane speaks to this waaay back in the documentary The Devil You Know… he specifically talks about Spawn toy collectors and how he has them addicted to buying his stuff. He is a true master salesman.
FOMO starts when the product is good, for example the Absolute Batman was getting crapped on up until the release on NCBD and shops were already ordering low on DC so when people read it and liked it and word spread and the people who were crapping on it are now paying a premium to get a copy of it creates FOMO, low print high demand on a good story, another example is ComicTom's comic book, he's a comic book influencer and even mentioned he dreams of his comic one day hitting shelves at shops and making the top ten list, he even got the great Ben Templesmith to do art and lettering and though his comic did hit shelves and the Todd Father himself could've put it under his brand Image and could've sold 100 thousand copies but didn't because even he knows and Tom knows too, you cant put frosting on a piece of shit and tell people it's cake!
Buying those baseballs was McFarlane’s way to get in the room with, or get his foot in the door with, major sports leagues. This allowed his company(s) to get licensing to produce merchandise for those companies, teams, etc… He has made his money back several times over in the business he was able to attract and produce from buying those balls. Plus, he also owns major pieces of sports history. I’m sure that there is no FOMO on his end.
@@teetoo3790 in all honesty I didn’t even say they sucked. It was on a WhatNot stream and I said, “I hope the Warriors beat your Lakers and LeWoke James.” He looked into the camera, said my username and said “goodbye”. Then I was blocked from all his WhatNot streams. He was sitting there calling Warriors fans garbage human beings and saying some heinous stuff compared to what I said. I’m not even an NBA fan, congrats on your recent championship, but I dislike LeBron. Can’t stand the dude.
Todd is a business man first so of course he promotes FOMO. But he really feels that fans should take a chance on buying a book because they might enjoy it.
I'd like to think Todd's response was to my comments on Tom's video, except I used hawkers & junk car salesmen. But, Todd's a sales director giving Tom a review of how he's doing selling Todd's & others products. Todd is all about the dollars and Tom makes money helping sell comics & stuff, fine. His subscribers should be aware of this and he shouldn't mislead his followers with "buy what I'm telling you to or you'll miss out $$$/exclusives/etc". That's what I call a shill.
It's just plain and simple advertising. The human brain is very susceptible to any type of fear, control whatever fear it is, and bingo you can change that persons perception of purchasing.
Todd has always been an advocate for fomo. Hell, he's one of the OG ringleaders in fomo lol. From his Spider-Man #1 variant covers to his Spawn figures back in the day. Lol anyone remember gold Spawn, Angela and Clown figures? Pepperidge farm remembers. Even now with his DC line with the platinum variants and variant covers of Spawn comics. So his line of BS is par for the course. I honestly believe thats what made him the most successful comic creator amd business man in his respected field. Not saying I agree with him but Ill give it to the man, he sure does know how to make his money. He knows how to take an L too 😂
That’s how Todd makes his money. He needs fomo to push his action figures and statues and such. I also found it so cringe how hard he complimented ComicTom. He was just gushing praise for this 4-eyed nerd and he didn’t mean a single word of it. Todd is a politician and all he wants is people to push up the price of his goods and he will say whatever he needs to in order to achieve that. Also, Lisa Noble has HUGE knockers…maybe 🤷♂️
fomo for speculating is different from fomo because it is the coolest thing in culture. you won't miss a new episode of dragon ball z as a kid because it was the coolest most unique thing
Another great video. Very insightful. I guess ultimately Todd is a businessman butI believe he genuinely loves what he does. I don’t think he is just in it for the dollar. He could probably put his feet up and rest on his laurels. When there is a genuine buzz about an item FOMO will rise its head. However. I don’t believe it’s always a bad thing.
Well of course he would admit it, he's earns money that way!!!! Geez, Tell me something that isn't obvious. I still would line up to meet him and get his signature at comic cons because: 1.) His sig has value and when I resell his signed book, I'll get a profit 2.) I do appreciate his genius. I dont care about who he is behind close doors, we all know he can be a jerk. 3.) Listen to yourself. “When I sell his signature I’ll make a profit”. Disgusting to hear. I would get his signature and like an actual fan and collector and not a dirty reseller I would hang it on the wall and cherish it. People like you ru8n the hobby.
If you don't like Sticky's videos and commentary, then stop watching. Guys like you crack me up. You complain endlessly about Sticky's videos, but you can't help but watch, comment and complain, can you?! Just move on. Finally, I don't think this was a "drama" video. He brought up some points about FOMO and marketing techniques and asked viewers of the video to comment. Hardly drama.
McFarlane greased that puppy harder than Diddy greased Bieber.
The comic industry isn’t actually about reading books and it’s so dumb.
In Europe, South America and Japan, reading comics is the whole idea!
Comic Tom is the king of Fomo
Todd MacFarlane doesn't care about hyping the secondary market; he doesn't see a penny from that. He cares about selling current monthlies. So of course he wants to create a sense of urgency -- its what gets the buyer to his LCS each week.
This right here

FOMO is so prevalent on Whatnot! it’s hard to watch most channels
No real suprise, McFarlane has been a Human Hype Machine from Day One

Comic Tom is a used car salesman.

I can’t do mystery boxes 😂 ever.
Comic industry needs the hype to continue to exist. Example was 90s comics overprinting books.
A fear can be overcome, it is also not mutually exclusive to comic book collecting. Fear is personal, and some are more susceptible to giving into their fears than others.
They really need to create a need where one dies not exist. If a comic and it's story is good no fomo is necessary

Comic Tom almost busted…. Respect that
I have always hated McFarlane. He is a carnival barker who would sell his mother for a buck.
2008 all over again just in comics
You mean the guy that roasted you🤣
Toy industry is the same way. PROMO THE FOMO!!!!!!!!! Can I get a 2 if you agree?
2😂😂😂
FOMO shouldn't be the reason to buy a book, good story & art should sell it, but if you don't have that...
Getting to the heart of the problem here.
I would like to see you interview McFarlane.
The advantage is being able to read in store before buying
FOMO sure got him when he spent over a million dollars on a baseball.
Buying those baseballs was McFarlane’s way to get in the room with, or get his foot in the door with, major sports leagues. Todd McFarlane hasn't drawn a full comic book in 30 years, at least Liefeld still makes full comic books. 🤔
@@teetoo3790 yeah but Liefeld blocked me for saying the Lakers suck. He’s a HUGE man-baby and I refuse to support anything he does.
