The market at work. Bidding frenzy is a thing. I agree with you as I can believe a shill bidder was involved but tough to prove. I would avoid almot all books on Whatnot unless it's a very cheap gamble. It's tough to get the information you need.
That wasn't enough time to inspect the book or ask questions. If you are going to spend over 4 grand. Where's the MVS is the number one question. I find that whole thing suspect.
For all you know, their dad's friend was Comic-Keys (remember Danny Dupak). You pay $4k, send it off for grading, and get it back in a purple label at its worth $2k. No way do you buy that kind of book, without seeing it in person. What about the possibility that both bidders were shill bidders and the winner cancels their purchase? You do that to get visibility so that at your next auction, you have 1000 viewers watching you sell your collection of Ravage 2099.
I’m a frequent visitor and buyer on Whatnot. Both those bidders were legitimate buyers and sellers on the app. What you captured here was a real life example of a grail selling in a live auction to the highest bidder. Truth!
Back around 1993, I was selling at a con in Harrisburg, PA, and I gifted a FN/VF copy of ASM #129 to a young kid who kept coming around & around to stare at it. His mother insisted on paying me something, but I politely refused. The joy I received from the kid's reaction was enough for me. I'M OLD SCHOOL, y'all. 😀
Dude ! You’re young! I’m a 57 yr old reseller who is having to learn new things constantly! I toggle between 4 selling platforms and manage my Auto Posher account constantly changing settings 😉 My highschool daughter set this up in 2017 and I have kept it going full time since .
Two bidders get caught up in an auction... happens all the time. Whatnot has tapped into (obviously by design) people getting caught up in auction fever.
This book is a 5.0-6.0 at best if graded by CGC and based on FMV is nowhere near that, so I feel bad for the person if they decide to have it graded will realize they will NEVER get that money back as an investment plan.
I can assure you I was not shill bidding. I wanted the book. My cap was 4k. Mvs intact. The book would probably grade in the 9’s. Feel free to comment back
They never showed the MVS, how do you know it was there? How do you know other coupons or pages weren’t missing? You just drop $4k on something you haven’t inspected?
You forgot that this person has only drama at his disposal as talent is non existent..any man who sits at home while he let's his wife pay the bills all the while acting the biggest fool for all the world to see gotta be a huge turn on for ms goose..
Great video, I love volatile whatnot 😵 it’s insane in these auctions with little to no people, makes me think everyone has money ready to burn when I get outbid for a $2-3 book and it goes for like $50
Yep, the color bar you see on the top of the pages. Spray a bit too much and it can run down the back of the comics. Common occurance. Overstreet gradings standards used to say this ink would not count as a defect, but I'm pretty sure CGC has always downgraded books that had any overspray. Don't think it would hurt an 8 or 8.5, but might bring a 9.4 down to a 9.2 or 9.0. And you don't see it often, but the worst is when you find a book in great shape, and they put the strip on the spine of the book. This happened in the early 70's at some distributors. At some of it almost alway ran onto front or back cover.
Go watch a replay of the feed on WhatNot. This copy of 181 has long, heavy indentations down around Hulks legs (at least two several inches long)(shown earlier before they ran it). And you can't see this defect when it is in the bag. But you can see it a 1:12:39 into the stream. It also has a spin indentation down around Wolverine's hand. I've had experiece with CGC grading books with these kinds of indentations. My copy of Marvel Spotlight 5, which otherwise looks like an 8.5-9.0, has one of these indentations that is about 1.5" long right in the center. The book came back a 7.5. CGC noted the indentation in the grading notes and I was told it knocked it down a full point. This book has two of them and they are bigger and longer than what my MS5 has. So I would bet on a grade of 7.0 at best on this Hulk 181. Now, if those indentations would press out... I've never had a book pressed, but I have thought about it on books like my MS5. But I don't plan to well it and I don't want to risk damage... He did show the value stamp before bidding started.
I can assure you that I was not shill bidding on that book. The mvs was intact and the printer error on the back could possibly be cleaned. I wouldn’t be surprised if that book graded in the 9’s. My cap was 4000
Why did you bid so high when the book had two obvious large indentations on the cover down around Hulk's legs; one across thigh and other lower going across both knees? In my experience this looked to be a 6.5-7.0 copy. Did you not see those large defects? Go back and watch teh replay of the stream around 1:12:47 mark and you can see them clearly when the light hits just right.
Really enjoy the crazy whatnot videos. 4k hoping the stamp is in or there's not an interior page tear is some high level gambling. Absolutely had to be a schill bidder to start that with 20 people in there imo.
I'm not sure exactly what is wrong with this aside from it being an interesting sale. I guess I'm not seeing any evidence of money laundering or shill bidding though it's possible. Seems like the seller didn't really know what they were doing. $4000 seems a little over average for a raw VF copy but far from an "insane" price. It IS insane (to me anyway) to spend that much money on a comic after only seeing it for 30 seconds. That's just me though. I'm sure some people have no problem throwing that much $ around. Still, it's an interesting auction, one that I couldn't stomach.
I became a bit of a whatnot addict, it just takes two and anything can happen. sellers with a couple of viewers can have regular viewers that simply trust them.
Listen, this is Bob in Connecticut $4000 sounds very very low whoever bought this has a great deal. On the other hand, I had the book 8.0 and I only got $1100 for that a few years ago.. it shows you how far comic books have risen now they flattened out some what after Covid. You can take my amazing fantasy 15 6.0 no Marvel chipping I bought that years ago for only $4000. It was graded 20 years ago. It looks much better than the grade.. the book is only valued at 74,000 right now go collect but I was offered $100,000 in New York at the Jacob Javits center but I’m not selling it
as a long time collector I grade this assuming their is a value stamp between VFNM to NM minus maybe with a press although I would be hesitant as the color strike on the cover is very nice . I think he got a good price . just sold a Wolverine 88 9.8 on eBay yesterday . can't beat wolverine as a hold
Looking at the bidders in these whatnot shows, a good 50% of them are also sellers. Sellers are just moving books between each other which could be slowing down sharp decline in values since 2022. I think prices will continue to drop.
No real collector would have dropped $4,000 on a book they can barely see on screen. No one even asked if the MVS is there, which is such a key component of this issue. This is clearly money laundering or some other kind of sketchy activity.
I would never spend that kind of money on a book on Whatnot. Especially from a green seller in the hobby. The fact that he showed the centerfold instead of the spine would've scared me out of the purchase. I would be concerned how they are going to ship the comic. Besides I don't think the platform is trusted enough to back either party if there's an issue.
Whatnot used to be so good for comics. I got tons and tons of books at $1. Now people are bidding $20 on a $4 book. $1000s on graded brand new books that have no value
Never used the app myself, but I've heard this many times, that $4 comics will go for $20 on Whatnot. I don't understand it at all. Does it just tap into a younger, severely uninformed pool of customers? Why would anyone overpay that much on borderline dollar-bin books?
Someone was motivated...or stoned will flipping thru Whatnot. Plenty of stoned people get things in the mail and go WTF? When did I do this. If the book is real, and not a fake cover, intact and they get at least an 8.5...they should be ok.
Oh no !!! someone set a price for something and someone else bought it???.....OMG!!!! this is big news!!! Well because I'm poor and can't afford anything unless my wife pays for it, I need to pretend to be upset for views as if I actually care!!! Not everyone is broke bro. Get your money up if 4k is a lot of money to you.
I can't even wipe my a$$ without getting crap all over my fingers let alone thumb through apps on my phone. Young generation is viscious with their finger coordination.
I hope he atleast used the 20% off ur first WhatNot purchase… 😂 seems FAKE! What are the odds that u get some idiot that doesn’t know anything about comics selling old books and some other idiot paying for something like he’s getting some rare treasure? 😂
I watched the Livestream live. Seller was helping their friend sell the friend's dads collection. The seller was not flipping thru his phone as shown here. That must have been your friend who was recording the show. The sellers are good, honest people who don't know comics like you. They use an app to get an average starting price to start the auctions at. They show the cover and point out stains, creases and anything that they may see. Someone has told them to show the middle staples of all the books. I don't believe that they shilled this book. Someone asked if they had one and they stated that they did but had planned on sending it out for grading. After being pushed a bit, they said that they would auction it, but has to get at least 2k for the book. It was the buyers that went into a frenzy. I believe that the buyer paid too much.
I can assure you that I was not shill bidding on that book. The mvs was intact and the printer error on the back could possibly be cleaned. I wouldn’t be surprised if that book graded in the 9’s. My cap was 4000
The way this guy is handling a book like this is driving me nuts

Like you said, this seller normally sells other stuff besides comics. It's actually amazing there were 18 bidders, or something like that.
That wasn't enough time to inspect the book or ask questions. If you are going to spend over 4 grand. Where's the MVS is the number one question. I find that whole thing suspect.

Sticky Goose the comic book market investigator. I like it. 👍👍👍
I just looked. They have over 2500 followers. I’m following them now.
If you have a wanted product.. dosent matter who you are.. put in due diligence to know what you have, and it only takes 2 bidders
That person that bought the comic is a reseller from Europe. He sells comics on whatnot
And the plot thickens
@@Stickygoose😂
And the other guy bidding is also a whatnot seller. Hmmm
I see it all the time, sellers are always buying from each other
His wife probably pays the bills so he can stay at home and be a UA-cam loser? Just a guess..

I don’t like the way he was handling the book. It seemed like he was on the verge of dropping it or bending a page at any moment.
This book is a 5.0-6.0 at best if graded by CGC and based on FMV is nowhere near that, so I feel bad for the person if they decide to have it graded will realize they will NEVER get that money back as an investment plan.

@michaelrenzulli-k2d how could you bid that high haha without seeing if there was a MVS

The green overspray is distribution ink.

I bought a ultimate fallout 4 and another random thor book for $7 . And that was during COVID when the fmv was insane
My friends at quality comics have a steal of a deal on a hulk 181 universal 8.5 for under 5k.
Fair price at least. Luckily there were several people in there that were resellers.
Great video💚💚💚🤟
For anyone wondering how old I am, I am 26. Whatnot is a dirty game that I’ve learned how to be quick on after being screwed over for 2 years now.
