A few years ago, we took a chance and retired early so we could focus on traveling, spending more time with our families, and volunteering as humanitarian aid workers. We slow travel around the world for about half the year with just our backpacks, living in a new place each month. During the other half of the year, we take road trips in our Honda Pilot microcamper, visit our families, and support people impacted by disasters like wildfires.

Many of us dream of traveling the world full-time. This lifestyle sounds amazing at first but I think a lot of people romanticize what it is like and don't want to think or talk about the downsides. Chris and I have chosen a part-time slow travel lifestyle where we combine a home base with traveling the world. 1300 usd is not bad. One American couple got 1900 usd per month, they have 2 children.
Wonderful Malaysia .
First time seeing people use “ringgits”! Usually we just say 20 ringgit (because ringgit is from the Malaysian language and there’s no s in the back because it ain’t English, kind of like you would say 10 Japanese yen instead of 10 Japanese yens
Oh! Haha! Thank you for explaining that!
Dangerous country with low standards
Dangerous how? School shooting? Rampage shooting? Random shooting? Shooting spree? Sorry we don't have that, only John Wayne country have that. Wild wild west, have gun will travel.

Nice train vlog! Great presentation. I am a new subscriber to your channel. Greetings from Plano, Texas, United States.
Thanks! Welcome to our channel!
omg I've been in a similar situation. Ended up sneaking the mattress to the other room and putting the two mattresses side by side on the ground. Only broke one lamp in the process lol
Haha!
@@ChrisAndEmilie I go on a lot of wildfire responses too, wonder if I've met you before lol
Hi. You should try to contact/ interview Andrew Taylor. He has a YT channel & has been living in Malaysia for ~10 yrs now. He lives in KL too. He's a retiree on the MM2H visa - he got in before they increased the financial requirements.
Thanks for sharing his info with us!
@ChrisAndEmilie the vlogger Ben Fishermin also lives in KL. You may also want to interview him. I don't know if interviewing ppl/ expats is part of your channel but I think it would give an interesting twist to your channel as you travel to diff countries.
Thanks for the recap! I love Malaysia and have been there a few times, but always only for a couple/few weeks at a time, and moving a lot faster. I have Asia/SEA on my calendar for next year and am really looking forward to revisiting some of the places I have been but at a slower pace. Looking at the food makes me really want to get over there now!
We can’t get over all the food either!! Everything is so good! We hope you have a good trip back next year.
Great overview of lifestyle and costs. Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. It seems many UA-cam channels on travel are hosted by salespeople. Your wonderful station is hosted by folks who seem to want to share and educate. Or that's what the agenda seems like to me. Again, thank you.
Thanks! We just want to share what we’ve learned with other travelers!
I suppose you don’t actually have to travel with your partner. If you can’t agree on these, you could take a leap and try going out on your own. Maybe not ‘divorce’ but more like a week or two on your own adventure. I’m currently working up my courage for this path. Will see how it goes from here
I think what’s key is communication with your partner. If you both are ok with you traveling on your own, then that could be a solution that works. Personally, traveling on your own for 1-2 weeks seems doable. Going for longer periods could be more difficult. Good luck, we hope you’re able to come up with a plan that fits for both of you!

Guys, get a can of condensed milk and boil it in water around 20 minutes! You got yourself DULCE DE LECHE! 😂
Have fun in KL! I took the bus from Singapore to KL with no issues, but didn't stop in Malacca. I guess it is just a reason to go back! I don't know if you are into diving, but the Pulau Redang island is nice for that and beaches if you have extra time!
Thanks for the recommendation!

Great breakdown! I especially appreciate knowing that you were able to get a good price for a month-long gym membership 🦾
Thanks! I really liked that they offered Body Pump classes there. And the instructors were really nice.
@@ChrisAndEmilie We LOVE Body Pump! We do it from our home now via the LesMills subscription service, found it easy to do during Covid and kept it up. So cool to hear that you found it offered in Buenos Aires. Curious, how do you identify good gyms (with Body Pump lol) when travelling abroad?

Omg you had me in suspense with those crazy, watery roads! So bad-ass, how cool that you ended up having dinner with the couple that helped you out. Experiences you'll always remember.
@@jessiquilla1 haha! It was definitely stressful but it all worked out really well in the end!
I hadn't realized some countries don't let you do Workaway or housits with tourists visas! I appreciate the good info (I had asked you a question around how you find accomodation in another video thread, before seeing this).
What a fun 3 days! You managed to find a ton of great, affordable or even free spots. $30 on food for two people is fantastic, you may have just put Singapore on our "doable" list. I just checked Airbnb to see what a month-long stay would cost, there are hotels on there, and some are around $2,600 USD thanks to the longer stay discount (no kitchen, but a big bed and a bathroom). That's a bit high still, but it's under $100/day, and if balanced out with 1-2 months in Thailand or Vietnam, it wouldn't be too bad. Food for thought ;)
@@jessiquilla1 We loved it and would definitely recommend visiting the city!
Great video Emilie, I just subscribed to your channel! My husband and I are embarking on a slow travel journey next year, we're FIRE-ing to focus on seeing the world, visiting family, and volunteering (kind of like you two!). We're from southern California, and similar to Vancouver, home prices and cost of living are very high. We're planning on 4 months travel, 2 months home (with relatives or housesitting), repeat. We sold our home to get closer to our slow-travel FIRE number, and also because we'd need to save significantly more to afford to keep paying our mortgage/insurance/property taxes while also funding slow travel. These "double payments" would have cost us 10+ years more of work to reach FI. Curious how you were able to both keep your home in Vancouver and fund the travel lifestyle (for the 6 months you're away)? Also, I'd love to learn about how you find apartments while travelling, do you use Airbnb or find more local avenues? Thanks!
@@jessiquilla1 That sounds amazing!! We hope you have great slow travels. Looks like you found some of our other videos answering your questions. Thanks for watching!
@@ChrisAndEmilie I appreciate the kind wishes! You guys look like you're having a blast, it's been a fun distraction from work to watch some of your videos, I'll keep doing so :) Catch you on another video thread!
@@ChrisAndEmilie Your videos have been fun and insightful, much appreciated!
I think you guys got shafted on the hotel room price. No way does a small room like this cost $150 per night. You can get much larger, fancier hotel rooms for that price. I guess you didn't do much research on hotel options before booking.
Sounds like you know your hotel prices in Singapore. Are there any hotels with better pricing in a similar area that you would recommend?
you can get nice hotel like hotel royal
@@ChrisAndEmilie For Asia travel hotel bookings, I recommend using Agoda to do your bookings. Set your budget to 150, set guest ratings to 8+, and you will be presented with better hotel room choices than the one you previously stayed at. Singapore is a small country, and most hotels are centralized within the city area, with excellent transportation options. Some better hotel room choices are even around $100 and provide superior amenities. I previously stayed at Hotel Boss, and it was excellent.
Hotel Boss looks nice. I compared the rates for the same nights on the same booking platforms and Hotel Boss comes in at about $20-$30 SGD more per night than the hotel we stayed at. So you get more space in a different neighbourhood for a bit of a higher price.
@@ChrisAndEmilie Hence, I ask you to use the filter on Agoda to find a better deal with close proximity to the city center. When I stayed at Hotel Boss a couple years back, it was around that price. It depends on the period/season of booking and whether there are any ongoing discounts or deals. I also found many other better options around $100 or less that are more palatable to stay at, with more wiggle room and walking space.

carrot cake is made of white raddish. It’s called “white carrot” in chinese, hence the name carrot cake 😊
Thank you for the explanation!
This video is giving me me a lot to think about.
Great video! Heading to Singapore next month. Thank you for the information :)
We hope you have a great trip!!
I see some people were cheap, cheap 😂😅
I think Singapore was probably our second-favorite stopover on our trip back from New Zealand 15 years ago. Found it very clean, very orderly, and yeah a bit expensive for sure. Tokyo was a really cool quick stopover destination too.
Glad you liked it! It’s definitely very clean as far as big cities go.
still cheaper than america
I have been to Singapore twice and the first time I stayed in a hostel and that was pretty cheap, plus my friend and I actually had our own room anyway. The second time luckily I had hotel points! I can't imagine spending $2,000 on a room, but $150 for a few days of fun is not horrible, since you will be able to save on costs at your next destinations. Also, I loved the hawker stalls and my friend is a vegetarian and they had so many choices for her!
That sounds great! We looked at a “couple pod” at a hostel that seemed pretty nice, though we decided on the tiny room instead. Nice that you ended up with your own room!
your hotel is right in the city center . you can get either slightly cheaper or about the same rate at geylang which is a red light district but with a bigger room space.
