Star Wars Legion: Basic Tactics For Every Faction
This Guar's War is one that one can get in cheap. Wonderful and charming model and the box comes with two full squads and even cardboard terrain for 65£, not sure how much in USD but I feel it's one of the most unique wargames when it comes to aesthetics.
My homebrew was cheapest for me.
I work in a game store in Oklahoma and we picked up this entire line, NOONE looked at it for 9 months, even the Bolt Action folks. Ended up selling everything for pennies on the dollar. I got a good Konflict 47 collection now.
That happened at my local store as well, despite having a large bolt action scene Konflict was discounted out. I'm hoping in the future with new rules and more support its easier to grow a group
Battletech is he only game I can think of where the war game plays like a skirmish game and alpha strike their skirmish game is arguably better as a war game. But in either scenario each game will take at least 2 hours to play
Really? Alpha strike games usually only take me an hour or so to play.
@@Wargamerofalltrades I don’t play online I play in person, tabletop simulator frustrates me (it’s a personal problem not a reflection on online players) and we usually play company sized games of alpha strike. Our record right now is a battalion of mercs vs a cluster of jade falcons.
I play in person as well but didn't really consider table setup time, and how large you can go
@@Wargamerofalltrades that’s true honestly I probably do spend at least half an hour setting up, more if we count objective set ups
200+ Dollar Resin block vehicles that look, feel, and paint like absolute shit. K47 is a hard pass for me until this is addressed by Warlord.
Maybe I've just had amazing luck with the vehicles, but so far the Resin kits they have are far superior to a lot of other companies I have tried
hands down one of the cheapest systems you could get into is the 'USEME' range from alternative armies. for about £25 with a starter set containing 30 smth minis in total, making two armies, and all the rules, which fit on a dozen pages of a booklet. plenty of options for settings, but the one i went with was the cyberpunk theme. because the minis are 15mm they paint up in just a few hours total, so its a really cost effective way of scratching an itch you might have for a new genre/ setting, without a big buy in or huge time investment.
Thanks, I'll look into them
Had some of the two hour wargames books forever but never played them. They look super "automated" if that makes sense, as in the player has very little input as to what happens.
I swear your timing for stuff I'm looking into is impeccable, like hell, I was asking about this game in a discord chat to see how it fun it was, then I see the notification, then see the name, Are you hacking my PC? Can you like not? 🤣
I'm happy my timing is impeccable, and my Mascot sees all with its eyes
@@Wargamerofalltrades Yeah, I wasn't sure if the eyes were part of the trick. However, I'll secretly collect the models from my local store, paint it up, and then try to get two battleforces to demo the game to people... Let's just say my local area is a 40k swamp, there is not much SW Legion either which is ironic as I collect an ever-growing Imperial Army XD
40K players are the hardest to convert due to the sunk cost most have in the hobby, but I've managed to drag a few into more games. I've gotten lucky and my local gamestore has a decent variety of non 40k games that do well
ASOIAF is way cheaper than these, and is also fun.
It's in my follow up video! It's also made my shortlist to buy and cover thanks to all the comments
Best part of Konflict 47 is that is an original IP, so warlord can work with it as GW does with 40k, without being strictly relegated to historical units. The wird part is that all the ww2 prototype (such as kugelblitz, the e series and similar) are NOT in the game. Why? They should be part of the focus! And all the ww2 enthusiasts would love to have some unique 1/56 model for that niche stuff
I do agree that they should be in the game, here's hoping they add them in!
Dust tactics kicked the bucket, so Konflict 47 can scratch that althistory itch.
I'd never heard of Dust Tactics before but know I have to see if I can track it down
Wow, I haven't heard of the game for some time now XD, the comparison is pretty fair though
BLKOUT is amazing
Check out Brutality Skirmish Wargame!
Will do!
BattleTech still one of top fav skirmish fighting but BLKOUT becoming my new addiction (my replacement for 40k)
Infinity cardboard terrain packs are another option for some good cyberpunk terrain.
The problem I have with Legion is its VERY infantry heavy game. And almost all the infantry look the same. Look at the Republic for example. Its dudes in white armor with a few small changes. Take a few steps back and looks a a Legion game and you can hardly tell the difference in the units. Now take a step back on a Warhammer game and you can EASILY tell the difference. There are not enough vehicles or vastly different designed units.
The models and lore are super cool for CLACK. I can't wait to start collecting at some point after I get through my pile of shame a good bit
I definitely prefer Alpha Strike over Battletech, as it just plays better in my opinion. Alpha Strike can use hex maps as well and it works well enough
What do you think about paper terrain? The stuff you can print and fold yourself.
I think it's great as a start point but for the time and effort to make it it's not totally worth it
Another carboard terrain company is TinkerHouse Games. I have quite a bit of their TinkerTurf terrain. A couple of other MDF ones are Warcradle, Black Site Studios, and Death Ray Designs
Thanks for the recommendations!
Keep up the good work. I really like the links in the description, so I can easily find what I'm looking for when I come back to the video ! 😊
Awesome, thank you!
I bought Gang Stronghold for Necromunda for the equivalent of ~65$ and it is easily enough to fill a Kill Team table (even just a little too much, depending on the combination of pieces). It is good quality, nicely varied, very modular - pieces connect without glue - a great price for a full set of terrain for a KT board if you ask me.
So, I have what might be a controversial opinion, so take what I am about to say with a MASSIVE grain of salt, but I genuinely think MDF, FOR MOST TERRAIN, is undisputedly the best possible option to go with. The majority of complaints that I hear about MDF is that it is hard to make look good, and it tends to be very boxy. These complaints, I believe, come mostly from people who have crafted entirely in wargaming. However, I am somebody that has worked with scale models my entire life, from model trains to historical dioramas, you name it. I am no stranger to putting in some elbow grease. And genuinely, an MDF kit is easier to get looking solid than most things I am used to working with. If I have an option to buy HO scale MDF buildings, I take the MDF 99 times out of 100, because I have messed around with enough cardstock and plasticard to give me PTSD when I feel the texture, or smell the glue... I get that model kit companies like Games Workshop and others have spoiled people due to the sheer ease of making their kits look professional. That being said, what traditional plastic terrain makes up for in detail massively looses in modularity and the crafter's ability to add their own touches. MDF terrain is a blank slate, but with enough quality of life additions to set it apart from plasticard buildings. If you are willing to put in the work, like I am, MDF 100% is the way to go, if not, then look toward plastic or 3D prints. That's the distinction in my eyes, as somebody who has been doing scale models since his dad first put an F-16 kit in his hands at age seven over twenty years ago.
Totally agree. I got into wargaming back during the days of rogue trader. There WEREN'T any GW scenery kits, so you had to either scratch build or convert, and mdf was a godsend. So easy to work with. Yes, you still have to texture and paint them, but once you get your confidence up in what you're doing, it becomes very enjoyable and creative. Plus mdf kits are still outrageously cheap compared to any alternatives.
MDF and XPS foam will get you a long way with just a bit of glue, some sand and some paint.
And anything you make will be cooler and cheaper than anything you can buy!
Yep! I do agree on the 3d printer side of it
In the U.S don't sleep on GCmini Good simple stuff it's easy to plus up with some modeling.
Thanks for sharing
Take a look at Mantic terrain crate. Some great stuff there and very versatile.
I will take a look for sure!
I want to also add in Acid House Terrain for a great source of terrain. You can get on their website and they give ton for the price. The terrain is cardboard terrain tho.
Thanks! I'll look at them
@@Wargamerofalltrades which sets they have available varies from time to time. The terrain is like an entire 3x3 table worth for 100 euro, or 6x4 table for about 200 euros. Personally I have the fantasy and sci fi sets, and I love it for my frostgrave and star wars legion games OnTableTop briefly mentioned them years back: ua-cam.com/video/tT54UgtapKo/v-deo.html
AHHH!!! YES! The cheap terrain video. I didn't expect it to come so soon. I love your content and hope your channel grows to be the largest in youtube.
Thank you! I thought about it a lot and figured it made sense to have it come out sooner rather then later
Dead Mans hand does have 2 plastic figure kits atm, but the crews are still metal. and will be for the foreseeable future.
I would've liked to know a bit more about what the games are about, tbh. It's nice to know that they're good, but i still know nothing aboit the games per se. Why does #8 need so many miniatures? Why are there 3 different games bundled up, are they the same, just different lore? Otherwise, links eould've helped with answering those questions too
See my issue is I see all these cool games and I spread myself out collecting a lot of different games instead of getting a few large armies
I have the same problem
The solo aspect brought me to opr. It is almost impossible to find a Warhammer fantasy game where I live
Thank you for mentioning ArcWorlde in your video! Really glad you like the game 😁
No problem! I'm really happy so many of my videos have been noticed by the creators of games!
Does it come with solo rules?
No it does not
ArcWorlde is fantastic. Such a unique fun fantasy skirmish game and the minis are brilliant. They also have lots of single faction starter sets as well. So you can pick whatever faction that takes your fancy.
A cool solo/co-op game called "when nightmares come" exists. Needs just a few miniatures, a 2x2 playing area and two sets of rpg-dice.
The add-on of zona alfa (which has allready a solomode) contains much new stuff for a solo-gamer. It is called "kontraband".
Just as idea for anyone who is interested about solo miniature games, but do not have (all?) needed miniatures: You can just have bases, add text like "error: graphics not found" and "ranger" and arrow to point direction where the character is facing. And maybe later buy and/or paint the miniatures (except if you are totally fine with this kind of way to play).
I absolutely love the lore and factions of age of sigmar I can wait for all the lore to coalesce over the coming years of war game development. I can't express how cool the Karadron Overlords and idoneth deepkin and fireslayers and ossiarch bone reapers and nigh haunt and flesh eaters court are. Ogres are bad ass as well.
I have three of these armies lol, glad you liked the video!
Great work on these videos. Could you please add links in the description (maybe edit previous ones) to publisher/reseller/main website for each game. That would add a lot of value and help when looking for a particular games when showing your vids to others people. Thanks
Sure! I'll start working on that to update the old videos
Thank you for taking the time to read and answer comments. 😊
How is Heavy Gear Blitz from Dream Pod 9 not on either of these lists?
It's on my list to eventually cover, I do know about it I just didn't have the time to add it to either of the lists
Timestamps would be good
They are being worked on! By the end of the week all recent videos and everything going forward should have them
If you wanna put more emphasis that this is not a tiered/ranked list, then consider using "Option A, Option B, etc" instead of #8 to #1.
Gasland your are on point best gateway to war gaming i made it itno mario kart gaslands
I'd really like to try out a wild west game. If folks could recommend one (whether from this list or elsewhere) as "the one to get", what would that be?
I've been looking for a solo wargames (ideally miniatures) that can you can fit and play on your work desk. 2'x2' max, but also fitting most cards or other things you need on the table. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them!
Great list. I've put Mutant Year Zero in my cart at least a dozen times. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'd also add The Silver Bayonet to the list.
I recommend The Doomed. Brutal solo play, can be pvp, or even pvpve/coop. Easy, minimalist rules, and a *ton* of monsters to fight, with good AI rules.
Thanks for the recommendation!
I would love it if you took a look at a few of my games from Four-Color Studios. Great list! Love the Five series!
I'll check them out for sure!
The Five Series is a solid bet for certain. Another great solo game from Nordic Weasel Games is Weasel-Tech; a solo fast paced mecha experience whose procedural generarion is very anime themed. Currently also available on Wargame Vault but the IP was purchssed by Modiphius and will likely be relesead under a new name.
I'll have to look for it!
