Add keyboard control to parts 9-16 with Yamaha MONTAGE M, MODX and MONTAGE
The MONTAGE family of synthesizers allow sixteen parts in a performance, but only the first eight can have keyboard control, while parts 9-16 must be directly selected to be played from the keyboard.
There is a commonly-known hack to self-patch the synth using a MIDI cable going from MIDI out and back to MIDI in again, but this only allows a single part to be targeted.
A better solution is to use the MIDI routing capabilities of a DAW to allow parts 9-16 to be played live all together with parts 1-8.

The Yamaha MONTAGE M supports polyphonic aftertouch, like the great CS-80, but only the M8x has a keybed that can play it. However, the M6 or m7 can still respond to poly AT over MIDI from a variety of external controllers. In this video, I show you various ways to unlock the power of the synth engines in your MONTAGE M6 or M7, while playing a little homage to the great master of poly aftertouc...
MONTAGE M is weaker than MODX and classic MONTAGE for external MIDI control
Переглядів 1 тис.2 місяці тому
This is just a short video, but it discusses another really terrible change that has come with Montage M. On the classic Montage, a part could control an external synth via MIDI, including sending program changes, with independent control over the tone generator for that part. On Montage M, setting a part to control an external synth disconnects the tone generator, so you effectively lose a key...
Did Yamaha make some things worse with MONTAGE M?
Переглядів 3,7 тис.2 місяці тому
tl;dr no, the Montage M is a great instrument, but there are a handful of things that don't work as well as the original model. Some of these issues are largely down to taste or habit, but others represent major regressions that should really be rectified with a firmware update. Here's my take on things that didn't improve with Montage M, as a long-time Montage user. IdeaScale links to feature ...

Confused between the Montage M and the Fantom EX - Hobbyist musician, currently own the DS 88 and the Korg PA 700 - which way do I go? Am also considering the MODX+
I think Montage M is a far more mature machine than Fantom EX. MODX is also excellent.
Solid video on how to add the image!
Thanks! Roland all the way for synthesizers! The sound engineering capabilities by adding your own waveforms, and the expertise of over 50 years of synth engineering made me decide for Fantom. Yamaha is good at piano/keyboards 🙂
it would be awesome for modx+/montagem to have all the stuff fantom has and vice versa. fantom gets 10000 arps etc, and montage/modx gets step sequencer, piano roll and pads.
Sounds like Akai vs Emu sampler.
Hi there, it's amazing that you figured it out like that. But I think we need to put pressure on the company to technically solve this stupid restriction. Not only was it on the original Montage, but this nonsense is also used in the new Montage M, where there should be no complaints about processor performance or polyphony. Personally, I don't understand why they are doing this and forcing us to work around this technological flaw.
Great Job!!! ty very much!. By any chance, do you know how to color the knobs on the screen? So they're not all white, which is the default color?. And/or is it possible to change the default shapes associated with the knobs? ty very much in advance!
thanks, it's absolutely useful!!!
Very very helpful! Thank you. It’s challenging to put all these pieces together…
Thanks for the video. Here's the problem I'm having. I also have an Arturia mk3 essential 88. Midi control centre I set CC commands to control an external synth (DSI Tetra multitembral) in Logic. Maybe I need to change something in Logic itself? The problem is that the fader or knob, if it has a CC number of 20, 24 or whatever, is simultaneously changing the parameters of the external synth and controlling Logic Pro at the same moment. I start turning a knob on the midi keyboard and at the same time I'm triggering some parameter on the synthesiser and the same knob is changing the parameters of the DAW - Logic Pro. That is, I turn the parameter knob on the midi keyboard, changing the sound parameters on the external synth, and at the same time the playback slider in Logic starts rotating back and forth. It looks like there are duplicate CC commands or numbers. Thanks and all the best.
LOL what a brilliant solution! so in order to get the PAT (which is there almost in all MOTIF series sound engines as well) we spend couple thousand more to get it working! That said, I haven't seen a single PAT included performance that doesn't look and sound stupid. Show me an impressive performance and task that can be done with PAT and I'll all the credits to you. Not just its is almost impossible to use, it isn't really needed. PAT was nothing more than a gimmick for Yamaha to jack up the prices.
FWIW you can achieve poly aftertouch for just a couple hundred dollars with something like ROLI Piano M, and personally, I don't agree that it's a gimmick. This video is just to show that it's possible to express poly-AT over MIDI, rather than an advert for any particular product or solution.
thank you so much bro you're the man!
Very welcome!
Really helpful, thank you for this! 😄
Great :)
How to do it With the MONTAGE ESP VSTi for PC Windows 10 /11 ?
Depends what DAW, but fundamentally the principles are the same. Create a 16 track (MIDI channels 1-16) multi timbral instrument in your DAW, record-arm all the tracks and off you go.
@@KierDarby Ok thank you :)
Thanks for doing this! I've had my Montage M8x for about a year now and had some challenges early on. I feel so much more comfortable navigating now than 6-9 months ago. I've owned a wide ranges of synths, workstations, controllers and software. The Montage M8x is incredible. The sound engines, quality, updated UI, sub-display and poly aftertouch has me playing more and menu diving/screwing around less and isn't that the point of any instrument/tool? Using: Yamaha: Montage M8x| Spectrasonics: Omnisphere, Keyscape | uhe: Diva, Hive2, Zebra2| Roland: Cloud Pro | Arturia: V Collection | NI: Komplete 14 | VPS: Avenger | Cherry: GX80 | G-Force: OB-E | Korg: Triton, MS-20 | Mac Studio | Studio Display | Logic Pro Sold/Traded: Yamaha: Motif XS8, Motif ES8, Motif8, KX-88, TX7 | ASM: Hydrasynth Deluxe| Roland: RD-2000, D50, MKS-20| Korg: Kronos 88, T3, MS-20 | Oberheim: OB8, OBXa, Modular 8 Voice | Rhodes: Dyno-My-Piano| Crumar: T2
I really do like Montage M, but in producing this video I found out a number of things relating the MIDI implementation that are far less powerful than the classic Montage, which is a real head scratcher. I’m producing a follow-up video to discuss.
@@KierDarby For me, those are non-issues as I only play in my home office/studio. The M8x is my only keyboard controller and I have plenty of software synths plus Logic to do what I need. My most recent setup was based on the RD-2000 and a few different hardware synths (Hydrasynth Deluxe, Fantom 08) and I found I spent more time screwing around than playing/creating. The M8x has changed that for me. Your mileage may vary. Playing live all the way back in 80’s with a non-MIDI Oberheim Modular 8 voice was interesting. My method to hold a note was a #2 pencil. The Yamaha KX-88 and Roland D-50 soon followed. Then a series of workstations. While there are alway improvements to be made, I’m very satisfied with M8x. Life is too short to drink cheap scotch, Cheers!
Thank you much
Welcome!
The music thanks you for all your hard work!!! I’m in the market for a keyboard and I’ve been comparing the montage m8x and the fantom 8ex. If you could only purchase one, which would it be?
It would be Montage M8x, without a moment of hesitation, for all the reasons I go into in my Montage vs Fantom video ua-cam.com/video/sVg8HZRsXAc/v-deo.htmlsi=VLkx1DcoxstWFDyf
@ Thank you!!!
I played that game…the Montage M8x was the clear winner for me.
Thanks for doing this video but 1, is the methods you covered the same in cubase and 2, can the midi ports and USB to host be used simultaneously in a live settings. Thanks in advance
For the most part, things are the same in Cubase, except you need to have a separate MIDI track to manage sysex data, last time I checked at least. If you want to use USB and DIN MIDI ports in a live setting, you need to to use MIDI tracks in your DAW (or any other MIDI routing software) to transmit data from Port 1 (USB) to Port 3 (DIN) - once you have done that, you can use both ports in a live setting - but without software to route the signals, the Montage family cannot directly address the DIN MIDI ports while the system is in USB MIDI mode. Check out 46:50 for a demo of this.
Havent watched it yet but big thanks in advance for putting this together!!
Very welcome, hope you find it useful
Thanks for the vid. Super nostaligic for me, as we had the same keyboard in the 80s. Then, a few years later, Dad swapped it for the PSS-780, with the colour drum pads, and different demo song. There was something very unique about cheaper synths back then. Newer stuff just isn't the same.
Glad you enjoyed it. From a MIDI perspective, the 780 is a real pain, as Yamaha renumbered the 680’s voices so they sit in categories, but when selecting them with MIDI Program Change, they actually use the numbers from the 680, rather than what’s printed on the panel of the 780!
One more thing I'd like to add about the 8x4 button grid... In 'Live Set' mode on the original Montage, the 4x4 grid on the left would select any of the 16 Performances within a Live Set Page, while the 4x4 grid on the right allowed you to jump to any of the 16 Live Set Pages within a User Bank. This proved to be invaluable to live musicians like myself who could call out any patch within that bank with seamless sound switching. If anyone knows a solution/workaround other than spamming the page up and down buttons, do let me know! Cheers.
Win some, lose some. The MONTAGE M has one advantage over the classic in that the dedicated 4 x 4 grid can continue to show the live set layout even when playing a performance, removing the need to switch to live set view to load a new performance, but losing the ability to switch the page with a single click, as you say. As far as I am aware, there is no way to do this now.
....I just want to be able to use it as a controller in Maschine, MPC, and Studio One. Simple.I have installed the MODX midi software etc. Nothing is "seeing" the MODX as a controller.
Ensure that the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver is properly installed, that your MODX is connected to the computer using the USB TO HOST port, and the MIDI I/O mode set is to USB. The MODX should then appear as a MIDI source and destination.
@@KierDarby All done! Still nothing inside of Studio One, Maschine etc.
@ Just a heads up I figured it out. It was the USB hub port I was using. I have to switch USB inputs and everything worked fine! Thanks for your help!
@ aah good work! I haven’t had problems with MIDI through USB hubs, but I have found that audio over USB can be badly affected by some hubs, so I try to connect my Montage and Montage M as directly as possible to my computer.
@ Yeah I can see why now! These MacBooks are stingy on USB inputs haha thanks for your help friend!
So your solution to getting polyphonic aftertouch is to buy a keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch? 😅
Well.. yes :) From what I’ve read online, lots of M6 and M7 owners don’t realise that their instruments actually SUPPORT Poly-AT, so this is really just a demo to show that you don’t need an M8x to make use of the new engine capabilities.
Nice work here! Looking for this so long, and now found it. Would you mind sharing your version of the Garage Band Project with me please? :)

@@KierDarby THANK YOU! :)
My pleasure :)
To be musician is not enough to understand all features about these two maschines. You must also be technical engineer, IT and musician. You have made excellent video mate covering all details and covering all audience. Thanks for hard work. BIG, BIG, LIKE to this video
Thank you! I do agree that these are enormously complex instruments, and they have a very steep learning curve if you want to produce results comparable to the preset performances.
Thanks for this excellent video! (Being an IT guy myself) I never thought that there is anyone else in the world who analizes user interface at this level and with such perfection! As an ex-Fantom owner, I can confirm all the facts of this video. I wonder why the manufacturers do not use feedbacks and resources like this in the UI development. It wouldn't be so hard to get rid of the weaknesses and get closer to a perfect UI. I am not sure if you mentioned that the black and red boxes diplayed on the Fantom screen block/freeze the rest of the touchscreen, so if you are about to set anything on the screen and move a real-time synth controller, all you can do is to wait until that boxes disappear. Working with seq - which intended to be a fast real-time tool to build-up patterns and songs, these boxes also interrupt the process. It was so annoying, these boxes played a big part in the decision for me to sell my Fantom.
Wow, I haven’t noticed the modality of the on-screen red boxes but now that you’ve pointed it out I can’t unsee it! Glad you liked the analysis - as an interface designer myself, I find so many design decisions in synthesizers frustrating and nonsensical, and Yamaha is not excused here, but from the perspective of an overall concept for an instrument, Montage has the edge over the “box of bits” Fantom approach :)
@@KierDarby The biggest part of the problem is that there is no parameter in system settings to get rid of these boxes.
I actually like the boxes, as it can sometimes be non-obvious what parameter you are actually editing when working with a multi-zone scene, but the fact that they are modal (blocks other input) is a real downer.
@@KierDarby It could be somewhere off-center of the screen. In the top row for example. When editing an EG or filter it could come handy but when it only confirms something like transpose or similar, it just takes my valuable time. Maybe I want to see the confirmation on the first week, but not each and every time I do something.
An excellent video, one of the best in terms of explanation. Although it was still not clear to me how the Montage synthesis is, in the Fantom each zone or tone consists of 3 to 4 partials, which can be modified in the same tone occupying only 1 zone of the 16 available in a scene. So in the Montage M, how many AWM2 or FM or ANx elements can be modified in a single part of a performance or can that be done?
For Montage, 8 AWM elements or 8 FM operators per part, for Montage M it’s 128 AWM elements, 8 FM operators or 3 oscillators plus noise for AN-X parts - and sixteen of any of these parts for any performance.
@@KierDarbyAh, okay, perfect. I have the Roland FA and I've also had the Roland Fantom 7 for two years, and I just bought the Montage M (still on its way to shipping) and I don't know anything about Yamaha synthesis in terms of editing. As you commented on the editing of some parameters of the elements, I hope it will be more practical and easier to edit in Montage M (mainly in the Envelopes). Thanks for the answer 💫🙏🏻
The Montage M does address some of the shortcomings of the original by enabling the under-display knobs to edit multiple parameters simultaneously, which makes things feel more responsive and immediate, but the lack of drag gestures on the Montage screen, seven years after the debut of the original is pretty poor. My Waldorf Quantum has drag support that puts the Fantom to shame and makes the Montage look ridiculous - but I’d still rather have a Montage if I could only have one synth.
so, should you revert the policy back after the installation had finished.
I haven’t tried it, but I suspect that would disable the driver, which relies upon the relaxed security policy to operate.
@ i just realized thr editor stil doesnt work for thr 10ii, even with the driver properly installed this way. It's been completely replaced with the thr remote app. Anyway, thanks for the video. I've learned something new.
Thank you for the video. It's very helpful. I've got 4 hardware analogue synths (Prophet 10, OB-X8, Polybrute and Subsequent 37) a computer and a ton of software. I do most with my software, but try to implement the analogue synths as much as I can. I thought about getting a digital synth with 88 fully weighted keys, so the Montage (M)8(x) and Fantom EX were on my radar. I don't feel like spending too much on digital synths, because I feel like they will get outdated sooner than analogue synths and you can't do much with it that you can't do more conveniently with software. I already own a MODX, because I thought I needed an additional synth for live performance that can play sampled instruments. It turned out I never perform live, so I hardly touched the MODX. Since I already have all of the Montage sounds in the MODX, I thought about getting the Fantom EX instead. It's also much cheaper and the ACB synths in there sound much better than the ZEN-core you can find on the old Fantom and Roland Cloud. Your video changed my mind. The Montage M8x is very expensive and difficult to come by where I live though. The old Montage 8 costs less than halve the price (I've seen them go for as little as €2100,-, second hand) but it's already outdated. Maybe I don't need either. I'll hold off for now.
In your case, I’d look at getting a high end MIDI controller with aftertouch to really unlock the capabilities you already have with the MODX and software instruments. The Native Instruments Kontrol S88 (Mk2 or MK3) would be a good fit.
@@KierDarby Thanks for the suggestion. I already have a NI Kontrol S61 Mk2. It's good. like the Fatar keybed on it, but I prefer the feel of the OB-X8 and Prophet-10 even though they're the same Fatar keys. I think the main reason is because of the lightweight plastic housing of the Kontrol vs the aluminum/wood housing and heavier weight of the 2 synths. The Mk2 is getting a bit outdated, because it doesn't support the features of the Mk3, but the Mk3 will become outdated, as soon as NI releases the Mk4. This is why I haven't upgraded to the S88 Mk3 yet. I'm fine not getting anything new at the moment. In a few years aither all of this will be cheaper, or there will be something newer and fancier available. No hurries.
So I'm taking it you could still have one part as an internal sound and one part as and external part layered across the same key zone? Surely this is better as you can then set different volume levels etc for the different parts? By this I mean that if you tweaked the volume of the internal part then MIDI would send the volume level for that internal part out to the external bit of gear which may not be right for the external sound?
Yes, you can do that with Montage, MODX and Montage M very easily. The difference is that while Montage and MODX allow you to have both the internal tone generator AND an external synth in the same part if you wish, the flexibility to do so is somewhat reduced with Montage M.
I'm glad that I bought the Montage after you pointed out all the Fantom's workarounds and conditions... Unbelievable that Roland deliberately duped everyone with the Fantom having 256 voice polyphony while leaving out that they weren't stereo... Bottom line, you proved to me that I made the right choice... Thank you... 🙂
I’m glad your choice is validated :) Montage just feels more ‘designed’ rather than ‘thrown together’ to me.
got one, the volume slider and output crusty . needs replacing , loads of fun . baby dx nd rx synth drum combo. it has midi in and sequence joy
It’s a bit of a hidden gem. Mine had ghastly audio output problems when I first fired it up after 20 years in storage, but after a few weeks of constant power, it’s not quite pristine but certainly acceptable.
Mx is much better than the old version
Is it just me or the OG montage sounds fuller in many of the presets. The Montage M is more sterile, but the original has some organic-ness to it. I've heard they've upsampled the existing samples, this could be the reason for the sterilized sound, as I don't think it's possible to get HD sounds out of standard definition sounds.
To be honest, on the full quality recordings I really can’t hear any appreciable difference between the two when they are playing identical performances. There are times where the performances are subtly different because of the changes in the architecture of the new version, but when playing things that are identical, they sound the same to me. That’s not to say that the Montage M doesn’t sound amazing, but rather that the OG already sounded fantastic.
@KierDarby thanks for the reply 🙏🏼. I'm surprised that there is no audible difference when listening to the original audio file, thanks for clarifying that. But sadly, I've heard this in other videos too :( there have been videos where they audition every preset, and the ones belonging to "Motif XF" category sound noticeably thinner compared to the presets which belong to "montage" or "montage M" category. I know what people say about youtube compression, but tbh, isn't every synth demo already on youtube? And many of them sound sublime, like Korg Multipoly and arturia polybrute.
But tbh I really love the new montage M's UI. It looks so much more accessible and fun to use. Endless encoders, dual screens, so many ways to modulate and poly aftertouch. It looks like a dream keyboard imo. Just wondering, how are the Motif XF sounds in the Montage M? Do they sound as good as they did in the OG motif XF? I'm a huge sucker for these old sounds, it would be one of the big reasons I would love to get a Montage M. Because on paper it carries the heritage of the motif series and brings new things like ANX and FMX (from the OG montage)..so it's super tempting.
@shehzadamurthy1983 I had a Motif XF before Montage. The Motif voices sound at least as good, and arguably significantly better when played from the Montage.
@@KierDarby oh awesome, thanks for the clarification. 😊😊 Looking forward to more demos from you on Montage M
Is the aftertouch on the Fantom 6 or 7 so hard to activate as the 8? Interestingly I’ve a venerable Fantom G8, and its aftertouch is also a high pressure experience and a disappointment.

The synth action on the 6 and 7 isn’t quite such a fuster cluck as the 8, but it’s still a far cry from the AT on any of the Yamaha or Fatar keys. A disappointment is a good description.
@@KierDarbya really excellent video by the way!! I’m subscribing.
On your Fantom G8, the AT felt strip might be aged, and shrinking a bit, thus getting the AT harder.
@@parkmediathat is possible, but my Fantom 8 has had shockingly poor aftertouch performance from brand new. It seems Roland simply doesn’t value it as a thing players actually use.
@@KierDarby Agree. We can say that Fantom 8 simply doesnot have Aftertouch. Old Fantoms were way better, proper resolution and playable force. I done repairing my old Fantom 88s AT with a replacement felt strip. (not G, but I suppose that could be similar than S and X)
Thx a lot!
My man, these tutorials are top notch. You are a pro.
Music industry is as one organism! They will never make a perfect instrument. Because they think how to continuously make their bisnes runing. You can not name one single instrument that has enough polyphony, analog, digital, polyaftertoch , effects, filters, and so on…! For good live performance you always need at least two keyboards and effects producing units! Yea, and drum machine too!
Actually, I think Montage M is pretty close to the perfect keyboard instrument.
Agree! But not perfect! That’s why to make montage perfect I bought Behringer UB-XA ,instead of replacing it by montage m! Very good pair. I appreciate your work on UA-cam channel! It is very helpful to musicians! And me too 😉
An update here. Further digging into the MONTAGE M data list has revealed that [Arp MIDI Out] is not completely lost - but the flexibility to enable it at will has been. Any parts set as external will output the notes generated by arpeggios over MIDI, but there is no way to do so for internal parts. See recent comments in yamahasynth.ideascale.com/c/yamahasynth/idea/175518
Hi, I saw another video tutorial for Midi Settings on Montage M. Did you try to select on setting, midi settings and local control switch to on ? Then, maybe you will here both internal and external triggered sounds.. I hope it works. I was thinking to buy one montage m, just to combine VST and internal sounds but with a simple mute button to mute internal sound if needed as I could do on my very old Korg Pa3x pro.. Will be appreciated if you share your result. Best regards
No, that won’t work, although to be clear, this setting does not mean that Montage M won’t play ANY internal sounds when external parts are enabled, but rather than PARTS set to external can’t play internal sounds.
Hello, does the new Montage M have a full-size sequencer to make an entire song? And is it possible to upload vocals to Montage M and combine them with a ready-made arrangement to create a ready-made song without using a computer?
Yes, but the sequencer is based on real-time recording and punch-in editing, rather than providing a piano roll or similar editing interface. Montage M doesn’t have a specific facility for vocals, but it can play a backing track along with your performance, which could be a recording of vocals. This is all possible without a computer, but Montage is more of a live sound engine, and the things you are describing are much better handled with a DAW.

Montage M does have a sequencer, but it is based around real time recording and punch-in editing, rather than offering any sort of piano roll or step editing interface. For vocals, the system can play an audio file along with your performance, which could be a vocal recording. However, Montage should be considered a synthesizer primarily, rather than a workstation, and both of the things you have mentioned are far better handled with a DAW, with which Montage integrates seamlessly.
It is the worst synth workstation ever, sound-wise. It sounds like a PSR 550😲. You'd better buy a TYROS, an old FANTOM, or even TRITON or KRONOS. Superknob is a good concept, but it has an obsolete sound engine combination and poor implementation. ZEN CORE and KORG ENGINE COMPILATION are great. YAMAHA no, down with it. ;)_
I’ve added my MONTAGE M MIDI Template to the template sharing thread over at the Native Instruments forums community.native-instruments.com/discussion/comment/191781/#Comment_191781
Hi, I just purchased an S88 MK3. I see you've got a template for the original Montage as well (which I also have). Would you mind sharing it? Or leaving a link where I could download one?
I’ll get them both uploaded to the Native Instruments forums when I’m back at my desk later today, and leave a link here. FWIW Montage M responds a little more predictably to the MIDI template than the classic Montage, but it’s still useful to have it.
I've posted both the MONTAGE and MONTAGE M templates to the sharing thread at the NI forums. You should find them here community.native-instruments.com/discussion/34278/kontrol-s-mk3-midi-templates-un-official-peer-to-peer-sharing-and-download-thread/p6
@@KierDarby Thanks so much! Any idea why I don't get any "Import" button on my S88, though? I tried following the instructions on that thread's first page: Settings › Shift + Browser. The keyboard is connected to the computer (Mac) via USB-C. The S88 should be latest version (1.8.7).
@@ram-4 not getting the IMPORT button usually means there is no data connection between the keyboard and the computer. Check to see if Komplete Kontrol instruments correctly show up in PLUGIN mode on the S88, and if not, check your connections.
Hi Kier, It is with great joy that I thank you for doing this. This is the first and VERY CONCISE video on the MK3 template artwork that I've seen and believe me when I say that I've been looking. Worked exactly a you showed and narrated. I have subscribed to your channel. Very interested in seeing what else you come up with. Thank You!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great tip/hack!! Thank you so much!!!
Most welcome!
