Some more Halloween tales...
Some odd things have happened to yours truly down the years. Such as 140 year old cats running about our flat, to melt away like mist when they're seen, WW2 Airmen at a former Airbase...to mention just two !

This was yet another find at the repair shop that closed recently. Someone had snapped both the bass and the treble knobs off, so the only cure was new pots. This mono set has a lovely sound with its old-world AD161/162 power amp, and has FM, LW, MW, and an AUX in too. There's also AFC. Now if only I was that easy to fix !
PHILIPS N4308 CLUTCHES
Переглядів 3,6 тис.6 років тому
A reel - to - reel's turntables look simple enough. But within this model, and the N4307, lurk rubber clutches to transmit drive and prevent tape bunching or spilling. On this machine, they'd turned to goo, so a clean was needed and new rubber parts making. This is also fitted to the PYE and Siera variants.
ALBA 632 RENOVATION
Переглядів 1,6 тис.6 років тому
A bit of a sad tale this one, this record player was found in a derelict shed that was part of an old - established repair shop. The owner had to give up due to health reasons, so, I've been rescuing things that would otherwise have thrown out. Or "recycled" - smashed up and sent to the third world...
Another dead Crap-o-phone
Переглядів 9836 років тому
One of many problems with Nostalgic players like this is the total lack of customer support. You'll search in vain for Service Manuals, wiring diagrams, or spare parts. Build quality is bad too, soldered ribbon cable covered in hot glue, encouraging failure. Really, you're better off buying a proper machine.
INSIDE THE PHILIPS D8734 BOOMBOX
Переглядів 2,1 тис.6 років тому
This was among the top-of-the-range boomboxes made by this firm in the early 80's. In many ways it tries to be a full function home hifi system. The mechanics in the twin cassette decks are just as complicated as they look. It isn't helped by those Red Leicester cheese gears too. But, with a little ingenuity and patience, this huge beast is singing again.
More duff Chinaplide junk !
Переглядів 7166 років тому
Three modern Chinese devices, all dead before their time. The TEAC unit was no more made by TEAC as I was. But they command a high price, around £300 - 400. Ridiculous for what is really just a crapophone. There are NO Service Manuals OR shematics for it either. It goes phut, you buy another throwaway. Give me an old'un any day. At least it'll be fixable, for the most part !
Philips D8958 resurrected
Переглядів 2,2 тис.6 років тому
With four duff gears replaced, new heads, belts and everything working as it ought, time for a quick show of this 80's Philips. Must be a rare one now, many will have simply been thrown out once the original gears died.
PHILIPS D 8958
Переглядів 1,6 тис.6 років тому
These enormous boomboxes were among the last European - built audio gear Philips made, before switching production to the Far East. Sadly ALL cassette transports made at this time included at least one gear made of dried-up Red Leicester Cheese. These stripped teeth and broke. Planned Obsolescence ? Or just stupidity ?

Philips 614 Record Player.

From the mid 70's, this has the disposable stylus and cartridge assembly. Presumably a special complete assembly was needed to play 78's, as the stylus for 33/45's is far too small. This is a very basic set in some ways, but has a good tone. It puts out about 3 watts RMS per channel.
PHILIPS 940 MUSIC CENTRE, FROM 1978
Переглядів 2,7 тис.6 років тому
This 40 year old Philips was in a bit of a state when it arrived. But, with a bit of TLC, most of its troubles can be repaired. It now has a new set of belts, and needed all the Philips GOO cleaning first. It's an ongoing project, the white casings had all suffered from time and were discoloured. So they'll be turned out in 70's orange. Still a few bits to do to revive the old thing mind. Inclu...

Thanks for uploading. Fascinating to see this again. I had a 9072 bought 2nd hand in 1981 and gave many years of good service. BSR turntable was ok. The cassette deck ran slightly fast, i recall, so anything recorded on the Alba sounded a bit slow when played on any other cassette deck! There was a circuit diagram in the back of the owner's manual - something you'd never get now. Great to see one of these again!

My mum had to feed four boys and had one of these working evey day making pastry or using the liquidiser for yorkshire puds. When taking off the top cover for the liquidiser it would isolate the beater on this model. The coffee grinder fits on the slow drive at the front by the way. The runner bean slicer is a worthwhile attachment as it takes the effort out of slicing them and does it much faster. I have a Major which I repaired as well as a 901 as spare which also needed electronic items to be replaced. Very underrated as far better than many of the more modern looking multi mix types.

That looks like a "music centre" that was produced under various names by the "Thorn Electrical Industries" Company. I used to work on those in the 1970's when I worked at the Thorn Factory in Newhaven, Sussex, England from 1970-1979. I can't remember the Model no's of them but they were quite a nice unit. I think the BSR record deck was a "P182" but as it is 50 years ago, I could be wrong🤣

I don't really have hopes for you to answer, but I found one of these inside of our shed/workshop and tried it out. It still works, everything works, even both tape players that failed for you are still in working condition. Sadly it was very dirty. And even though I cleaned it as good as I can from the outside I now have problems with all of the sliding potentiometers for equalization and volume. The speakers cut in and out, some frequencies are just gone spontaneusly and they are very, very scratchy. I can sometimes touch them in specific ways and the speakers will fully work for as long as I hold my fingers there. So it definetely is some kind of loose connection. Probably from dirt and corrosion inside of the sliders. I would like to know how I can get these back into working condition with minimal risk of damage, since the boombox is otherwise in decent condition and, as I said, works. I'm also struggeling with opening the thing up. Don't want to damage it and I've never worked on audio equipment before. ; ) But I'm gonna figure it out eventually.

There are threads about this problem on message boards. I bought some silicone vacuum hose and cut off a slice of it to replace that rubber piece that had disintegrated. The hose should be 2mm i.d. and 5 or 6mm o.d. For my RT-1157, I did not need to remove the bearing, only the capstan/flywheel itself. The challenge is getting all the goo out once that's done. Just like you, I often wonder why I spend so many hours with these things.

River alwaysa gave cheap and nasty garbage technology the contempt it deserved. When he was known as AG3304 he chucked one of those horrible generic personal cassette players that ate tapes in the fireplace after someone suggested he burn it! I always hated those cheap and nasty Steepletone fake nostalgic tat like this. Why buy this vile POS when you can easily buy a genuine vintage 30s or 40s radiogram off EBay?

A bit of advice. Dump it into the nearest dumpster. What a load of tat. If you open it up, it has the circuitry of a low end Sashio ghetto blaster. 8, YES I REPEAT 8 lousy watts per channel. Those tweeters on the speakers are not actually tweeters. They are decorations. If you think that sounds good, you need your ears testing. Dreadful things. Bottom dredging marketing strategy, make as much money for yourself while destroying the middle ground hi-fi market for everyone else. Who would buy a far superior Sony or Panasonic midi system for £239 while this "mugs eyeful" was being sold for £149? A lot of kids were sucked in by the shiny front panel.
