Lexus Off-Road Adventures
Приєднався 1 жов 2012
The Lexus GX470 is the pinnacle of practicality, off-road capability, reliability, and affordability. Let's explore how to make the most of this platform with modifications, whether DIY or professionally installed, and get out on the trail!
The ULTIMATE Lexus GX470 OFF-ROAD/Overland Build (For Under $20k) Part 4
In this video, we cover the equipment that makes overlanding in a Lexus GX470 or similar rig, like a Toyota 4Runner or otherwise, a comfortable and enriching experience, rather than a nightmare. Overlanding is just car camping, but this does not mean you have to be uncomfortable or miserable.

Honest thoughts: no sways ftw. The level of flex off road is insane and you just gotta make sure your spring rate matches your rig weight + not be a dummy when driving on road (I.e. taking turns too fast). It leans a lot when on-road but it’s kinda fun lol Debating whether to just leave as is

Thanks 👍🏿 good job.
Did you tighten the brake line back?
hey quick question… well 2 1. is this considered triple locked seeing that the gx comes with a center locking diff 2. do the lockers interfere with the Atrac system
@@LosAngeles1791 1. yes she is triple locked 2. ATRAC only activates when a speed differential is detected between the wheels, so if you’re locked up, there is no ATRAC since the wheel speed sensors see that all wheels are spinning the same speed. If you are unlocked, ATRAC functions as designed. If you only lock the rear, ATRAC will only activate on the front/ vice versa. There are no downsides.
@@lexus_offroad_adventures ok thank you for the input, i’ve always seen 100 series guys say that older lx’s are better locked because there was no atrac to interfere but you’ve cleared that up for me, thanks, also are you running ARB lockers? i’m saving up for a future build and trying to soak up as much info as possible
@ I personally think ATRAC still has a place off road and it’s a great system. I use it all the time, especially when I need to make a tight turn and don’t want to use the front locker (it is very difficult to turn when fully locked) ATRAC helps me get the power to the tire with traction without needing to have the front locked. If you find the wire that powers ATRAC going into (I think) the ABS module, some guys have tapped it, put a switch into the cabin, and now are able to turn off ATRAC completely to do donuts or whatever. So if your goal is to eliminate ATRAC that would be a cheap and easy way to start. Yes I use ARB air lockers.
@@lexus_offroad_adventures you know it’s funny you mention disconnecting atrac because the FJ cruiser of the same year has a standard button for attrac in which you can turn it on or off, also random question, how would you complete the gx470 off road to the lx/land cruiser?
@ yeah the FJ was more off-road oriented form factory for sure. Easy to add the switch from what I’ve seen though. If you’re comparing an LX and GX, I’d say the LX/LC have a big advantage in having more robust rear axles (9.5” vs small 8” on GX). They also have more room. But… that is also my gripe about them as well: They are too big for most serious trails, they’re thirstier on fuel, and heavy. The GX/120 platform (vs the 100) is the perfect size for a “rock lander” build where you set it up for tough trails but also have enough room to live out of it for a while if Overlanding is in the cards. The mighty 100 is great for Overlanding and may even be preferable though. I’m sure you can set them up to be seriously good on tough trails, but you’re having to overcome so much size and mass that it may be worth it to just start smaller like with a 120. Of course, I’m biased to the 120 platform so talk to some 100 guys as well and keep in mind that either vehicle may work better *depending on your priorities* .
Hi I’m leaving in United Arab Emirates, i need same device, where i can find it ? Thanks
Do you know if it's any easier to remove the actuator with the center diff in the locked or unlocked position? Or does it make no difference?
@@sgoldste02 I have only tried it when unlocked
Usually with those add-a-fuse you save one slot for the original fuse. In this case did you eliminate your cigarette lighter?
@@Jstimp927 nope, everything still works

Awesome video, quick question. I wired everything up plug and play, however I got not audio out of my rear door speakers. Says I need to run a wire from factory amp to AMP CON wire on joyings harness. Any chance you had this problem or know what stock wire turns on the factory amp? Thanks!

@@flyingeyeballfpvjoe1516 I usually run it on a 45-degree angle on the back of the tire carrier for this reason. Works fine like that
Why did you need the music? Yo talk so softly I cant understand what you’re saying trying to hear over the music. If this is to help others we didnt come to listen to music.
@@chuckturner997 I’m honestly so tired of these comments. People need to start somewhere when it comes to video editing, and I did not start out perfect. If you would like to experience a better mix of background music and video content, please check out my more recent content.
@@chuckturner997 “if this is to help others” yes, that’s purely it. A free instructional video to help others. I didn’t have to film it but I did, and this was done well before any monetization was in the cards.
Chuck, are you deaf? I can hear him perfectly fine. Music didn't bother me at all. Quit whining and make your own video to help others for free. Oh wait.. you don't..
It makes no sense to me why people spend the exorbitant amount of money on the rooftop tents, and for those expensive refrigerators that require that expensive power setup. You don’t need any of that. Build an interior platform, remove the single seat. You can make sausage and bread without a fridge. Think about it a bit. There are plenty of really good and healthy dehydrated foods that just need water to be boiled. Induction stove is not worth it. If you’re saying well there’s no room for the cooler and to sleep in your car, yes there is. When you arrive to camp just take the Yeti cooler and place it on the ground outside your car while you sleep. They are bearproof anyway and hold ice for a very long time. Long enough for any trip. You just need to have a little bit of ingenuity and you can avoid all this weight/money spent. Being resourceful and learning how to get away with less comes from learning to actually camp/setup tents/tarps/cook from a RTIC or YETI cooler. It also comes from many years of backpacking where all my food came with me in my backpack. Beans, rice, hard cheese, eggs, freeze your meat before your trip, all this stuff can be cooked without an expensive refrigerator.
@@russm195 if you look at my older videos I’ve done all of that and upgraded from there. Everything you said makes sense for someone starting out who wants to see if overlanding is for them. Once you really get into an activity, it’s ok to upgrade if you see fit. I’ve done both and the RTT is more comfortable in every way. I built the solar power system myself. The fridge is like $2-300. I encourage you to go back and watch some of these projects to bring you up to speed and who knows? Maybe you’ll see one you might want to try. Slumming it backpack style (which I have done before, and it’s great, just not with a family of 4) is not for everyone
I’ve been camping for over 10 years now and there’s no scenario where I would need half of this stuff. I think the difference here is most people into “overlanding” think that gear and money solves all their problems, when in reality they are just propping up an industry that thrives off their inexperience. I started backpacking, where a weekend away had everything I need in a 60L backpack, including a chair and stove, and I ate really well. Without a rooftop tent you have so much available storage on the roof, and without an expensive refrigerator (there’s none worth getting for $200 btw), I can still make all the same things you can make by simply carefully planning when I get ice for a cooler. Car camping is already luxurious, and way more comfortable than setting up a tent, and too many people push gear that is unnecessary. I get it, you make money off affiliate links, but this stuff is just not necessary at all to be comfortable in the backcountry.
@@russm195 I understand your point that if you don’t *need* it you shouldn’t *have* it. I just disagree. But you have your right to your opinion I do not make hardly anything off the few affiliate links I have haha I wish. I haven’t even posted a video in over a year to focus on my masters. It’s not a money play in the least. I just feature things I think people may want to try to make their adventure more fulfilling (whatever that means for them specifically, it could be that it would be more fulfilling with less and I respect that) and give my thoughts. Cheers, Daniel

Yeah putting the lock washer on the bolt side essentially leaves the “fastener hardware” unlocked. Now that top nut has nothing keeping it from vibrating lose and falling out. Lol
@@davenewton5895 time stamp?
@ unsure of exact time stamp, when installing the upper spring seats, the lock washer and flat washer intended for above the frame before the nut , was instead (lock washer ) was moved to the bolt end of the fastener assembly. Essentially locking the bolt to spring seat and leaving the nut above the frame “unlocked “ . So the nut can loosen over time due to vibrations, then come off, and the spring seat will be floating freely and essentially could fall out the bolt. Most definitely would fall out spring seat may stay in place just from the spring tension. I guess the bolt is more or less to keep the spring seat centered where it is intended to be., and not actually holding the suspension parts together. I just pulled the rear end out of a 2003 GX 470 video was helpful nonetheless. Thank you.
