    Before we talk about my exact build budget breakdown, which I plan on making an updated-for-2023 video for, let's discuss the basic considerations for building an extremely capable Lexus GX470, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Tacoma-or other IFS platform- Off-road/Overland build. 20k may seem like a lot for all these modifications, and trust me, I have found ways to come in well below that, but if you compare the capability, comfort, and reliability you can get with these rigs compared to the cost of a brand new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Tacoma Trail Hunter, or Ford Bronco Sasquatch, the value for dollar proposition makes a lot of sense. For me, the value-to-performance ratio starts to get a bit skewed when you get into custom work or extremely expensive parts like front long-travel, etc. You can get an insanely capable rig with the basic stock control arms and parts, while enabling less costly maintenance, broad replacement parts availability, and simplicity of repairs.
    Remember: This is just PART 1. We still have a lot more parts to discuss to get us up closer to that 20k mark. If what you see in this video is all you need, things will be a lot cheaper for you.

    Nice overview, and nostalgic for me for the past few years. One thing to add, maybe I missed it, is the BMC, or body mount chop. I had a local body shop do that for me with the kit from Metaltech 4x4. There are also some body mount relocation kits that remove the factory mounts that block the bigger tires.

      Yeah good point, I have a BMC, definitely one to add to the list for running bigger tires.

    Great video! Keep em’ coming! I’m just starting my GX470 mods journey for eventual overlanding. I noticed you used to run 255/80r17(?); I am considering this size in a new tire (I have icon stage II lift) but in moving up to this size should I be concerned with wearing out the stock brakes? Or other suspension/drivetrain components? FYI - I say overlander but this would be a family camper with some light off-road use mainly. Thanks again!

      This was one of the thinnest hard shell RTT’s I could find at the time at 7.1”. I think it looks higher than it is bc the JW off-road rack design. I really like the ProSpeed rack for how low-profile it is if that’s your priority. Might be worth checking out.

    These are getting MORE expensive every day-- even though MOST used vehicle prices are dropping-- due to the lack of supply and increase of demand.... I'm considering it-- but don't know if I want the 8-10 MPG it gets..... that's a good bit of fuel for very little travel. I thought about having an extra tank installed in the spare tire wheel well too- giving it 56 gallon capacity instead of only 23--- and using a hitch mounted spare carrier.. I like those anyway..

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  10 місяців тому

      Hopefully the prices drop back down to a reasonable level again. I can get 15 or so highway with 35s, 900-1000 lbs of weight and a RTT with my regear, if I stay at a reasonable speed. 10mpg city and 15 highway isn’t the end of the world in my opinion. But yeah as far as range, the aux tank is a must for any serious overlanding

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  Рік тому

      As I said in the beginning of the vid, I can’t possibly account for the variance in price between everyone’s vehicle.
      In the final video in this series I’ll do a full budget breakdown spreadsheet. I will include labor for what I paid labor for. I won’t include labor for stuff I did myself. That way people can see how much they save by using my install videos, or if they want to pay to have it done, they can customize the budget.
