Get the rig in tip top shape and show us the Rubicon Trail 😈 I’ve only done it in my dad’s Jeep Cherokee but I want to show him that a GX can survive it!
Haha my rack is pretty much toast. Leaking and I think it skips a tooth when i wheel hard because my steering wheel is canted but my alignment guy says the control arms are good so…Gonna probably have to upgrade to a tundra rack
@@lexus_offroad_adventures I'm right there with you. I've been looking into the tundra rack upgrades as well. Just looks like you lose some turn radius which is a bummer. The GX460/5th Gen 4runner racks seem like an easier but less significant upgrade. Not sure which way I'll go yet.
@@gxor4x4 hahaha man, I was this close to upgrading suspension, but those funds are gonna go to the rack in all likelihood. Gonna keep rolling on the ole $800 Eibach kit for a while longer 😅 but I’ll be doing a video on it for sure. I’m hoping this local company will help me out but we’ll see.
@@candidcapture I have lockers front and rear so I don’t use Atrac. No I opted to not upgrade my rear axle (front is usually considered stout enough). I explained why in the comments on a previous video showing how to choose your regear ratio… or why lockers help off-road. Can’t remember which one
How are your 4.88 gears holding up?? We run the same diffs in the hilux in Australia i believe. Everyone reckons we will break them fisrt hard track. How are yours?
Everything is good! Drives great around town, barely ever drops out of overdrive going uphill on the highway, and gives a nice low crawl ratio. As for breakage, it all comes down to the thing between your ears. As you saw in the video, had I kept my foot in it a bit more, I probably would have made it up, as Earl demonstrated. But I felt like that could have made me do a nasty bounce and shock load the driveline. Earl has an 8.2 so he maybe had more confidence to send it. But I could have been a bit too conservative. Either way, I knew when to back off and played it safe. Some people don’t want to do that. Ok, those people should definitely spend 10k on a 9.5” diamond axle. As for me, the cost-benefit was there and I drive more conservative. But I still can make it up some super tough trails that way.
I have said in the comments on a previous video why I’m more comfortable tackling the hard stuff with fresh gears: over time the backlash on high-mileage 8” diffs gets way out of spec. It increases the shock load you put on the gears at the slightest hint of bouncing. Just getting a pinion/carrier bearing preload refresh can help reduce this risk. Getting a locker, so you don’t have to use momentum as much to get up obstacles also helps. Shortening the ratio so you have more control over wheel speed also helps. These 3 factors I think enable me to run the stock diff on 35” tires with all the weight
The Gx470 is one of greatest SUVs of all time and a great offroad vehicle. But is not a rock crawler ...the physics are impossible. Why waste this money. It's the perfect overlanding vehicle. All this money to get a rock crawler that's as good as a stock jeep. And all its other qualities are ruined in the process.
Nope, I don’t agree with this take. In no way have I ruined the best qualities about the vehicle compared to a Jeep. I’ve driven Jeeps. It’s like driving a tractor compared to my GX. Sure, Jeeps are super capable, but far less balanced and unable to provide a smooth on-road experience like my GX even with the upgrades I’ve added. I pushed my GX hard here but it’s not doing this stuff 99.9% of the time. Most of the time it’s being a nice daily driver or light overlander and it still does all that perfectly. That’s why I love this platform!
Also, when you say “the physics are impossible” I’ll simply refer you to the video. John Bull is a Jeep Badge of Honor Trail www.trailsoffroad.com/blog/the-complete-list-of-jeep-badge-of-honor-trails

Did you upgrade the front & rear axles? I get a bit spooked when ATrac kicks in and it wants to bounce

Did you see the weld 74 portals for the Toyota platform?
Yep! And there’s the Werewolf Tech ones out of Ukraine. Significant investment! But very cool
Long travel helps a lot.
100% … as I found out at the end lol
Might finally be time to upgrade from my $850 suspension system.
How about mid travel suspension?
I have to/NEED TO KNOW what head unit is that!
