I used to work weekends at a stag specialist. One thing you havent mentioned is that towards the end of Mk1 production, they did introduce some things which also appear on Mk 2s at the time we used to refer to K and L reg cars as Mk1 and a half. You are spot on with the door latches on the B posts, there was no cross over with later MK1s having MK2 B post latches. Mk1s generally had A type OD but some of the later MK1 has J type ODs. While I was there, we had a prototype stag I think it s reg number started PVC and it was G reg. The really interesting thing about it was that it had been changed at the factory to be left hand drive OR right hand drive so that it could be presented to the home market and overseas market after swapping dashboards, pedal boxes etc. It also didnt use the stag V8, it had the straight 6 with twin carbs. The weight of the straight 6 engine suited the stag and the engine dropped straight into the engine bay and onto the mountings. I always thought that if I every had any issues with that stag engine , I would drop a triumph 2500S engine into it since the engine bays are almost identical...and the prototype proves it. Original good stag difs were like hens teeth 30 years ago due to the vents blocking, the diff blowing it seals and losing its oil or the aluminium diff back plate bolted to the steel diff carrier and rotting holes in the back plate and the diff losing oil. Although the crown wheel of the stag diff is the same ratio as one of the other triumphs ( I dont recall which one it is) the stag crownwheel is different in that it is broader in order to handle more power. I always suspected that they had wanted to give the stag more power but couldnt because of its cooling issues so the up rated diff made no difference. You mentioned export cars MK1 headrests and side marker lights. The export front bumper brackets were also different in that they had a plate welded over the top of them to reinforce them. I built my stag up to Australian spec and it was a MK 1 so it had those special headrests, the rear marker lights and the bumper brackets. It also had very rare stainless steel caps which fitted on the front and rear top corners of the door cards held onto the doors using small philips head self tappers. And yes!! stag bonnets dont rot but boot lids do! Oh ! one other thing! some MK1 home and export cars had an additional pressed steel ribbed cross brace in the doors presumably for side impact protection.

Iv always wonder why people who have a tall garage like yours dont take advantage of storing stuff higher up. Like if you got some more pallet racks and make a mesanin for all the pannels that have been sacreficed to save one car, they are still usefull for other cars with different damage. Or just store them and put online for sale whole or part of. Im a hoarder and would most likely have like 50 cars in there and have to work outside if i have room there.

Good to see you back mate. The very reason I started restoring cars back in 2012 was due to severe mental problems I had at the time. I don't know how things would have turned out without the projects giving me something positive to think about and get engrossed in. I'm sure all of us wish you well.

Back in the 1980's I had my Scimitar rear ended by an uninsured Fiesta driver which pushed it onto the bonnet of a GT6 it was parked next to. Fiesta was written off but Scimitar was fixed with a bit of fiberglass work and a new petrol tank!😂

Had a P reg mk2 back in the 90's spent hours fixing the rotted rear radius arm mount. Rest of it was good but it had a blueprinted essex V6 that I never got round to putting the right carb on and a very indecisive auto box. Made a lovely sound and used to take me daily from south manchester to Huddersfield over Holme Moss.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! You didn't mention that the early M3s had a lower wishbone rear suspension with Rotax couplings in the driveshafts, like the Mk2 and different to the Spitfire, Mk1s and later Mk3s. It made the handling superb...unlike the others! In effect, the rear suspension was double wishbone, like the Herald set up on the front. I did 60,000 miles in mine and heaps of UJs in the driveline...then upgraded to a Dolly Sprint, with which I ended up on first-name terms with every nut and bolt after about 18 months..but it was worth it! Oh that they'd put that engine in a GT6 body.. One track day, I did a 1min 6-second lap of the Brands Hatch short circuit when the Formula Ford lap record was about 60 seconds. You're dead right about electronic ignition and electric fan, even back in the early 1980s...I built my own from a thermistor and a relay and used two Lucas heater fans side by side. The GT6 sure was a much better car than the MGB GT....and still is, of course. 100% agree they're an unsung classic...

As the SAAB engine is the left bank of the Stag V8 certain parts are compatible, SAAB shims came in finer sizes and if I remember correctly you can use the chain guides and tensioner. I used to put a half penny in the oil pump bypass valve spring and this gives another 5 psi and helps the tensioner at low RPM. As mentioned watch the tensioner does not over set. Engine must be cold.

As the owner of a 1970 Stag, which I’m keeping relatively original, I disagree. The Stag is a true classic design and looks as good as ever today, I see no reason to keep everything concourse original. The grey paint enhances the car, and I think the interior is a great piece of work. It’s still obviously a Stag, but modernised, and it’s the owners choice on how it looks.

I think, the exhaust manifold has warmed up the nylon and the oil pressure pushed it off the barb. It's also a new oil pump and they tend to set the relief valve too high in my opinion, this one makes over 80psi at idle cold, although with the damaged pipe it may have saved the cranks life!

Interesting build..do you still have any of the original sheetmetal/parts that were taken off the car?

No, they are long gone lol. I cut the wings off and stood on them before taking to the council tip! The inner wings/bulkhead/slam panel and valance sold on ebay for 200 quid and the guy never collected them, gave them to the scrap man!

@@YorkshireClassicCarsltd oh well no worries, anything else leftover? I'm after a steering column( the internal shaft is what I really need) and the "rag" joint that connects the rack and pinion to the output of the steering column. Parts are hard to come by where I'm from.

I have both David, column shaft from a face-lift '73 and a few of the coupler/rag joints

They don't have screws it's the nut under the carb that the jet slides through that adjusts thr mixture
