Wild camps, hill-walks, hikes - and maybe, one day, a National Trail or two.
A keen hill-walker all my life I only reconnected with wild camping in 2021. I'm on a learning curve with both skills and modern equipment. (especially filming for youtube!). I'm always open to suggestions as to how I can improve so please dive into the comments with any hints , tips or advice you think might help or with reactions to what you see in my videos.
Hopefully my stumblings might inspire one or two of you to have a go yourselves. Just remember to respect the countryside - and most importantly Leave No Trace.

I'm back at last - a chill night and "proper" cooking. Plus a new tent and new stove.
Cooking Christmas dinner in a tent on the Black Mountains - how else to celebrate being back in the hills after almost three months. Just taking a break from the house renovations to relax and have a bit of me time

Brecon Beacons wildcamp - not the best weather ever!

First Time Camping On Kinder Scout - Such A Stunning Location!

For my first Peak District wildcamp I chose Kinder Scout. The journey up from Gloucestershire was pretty fraught with road closures and delays caused by accident on the motorway but once I got there I was blown away by the place. I went up via Ringing Roger, camped above Grindslow Clough and descended via Grindslow Knoll. with the heather in full bloom and both the evening and morning blessed w...

What has the Met office got against me? I checked the weather forecast a couple of hours before I left home - in the Brecon Beacons of South Wales winds were predicted at low 20's mph with high 20's / low 30's mph gusts. Expected to be partially cloudy and no rain expected. That's not what happened! Website: www.thornesonline.com facebook: thewanderingforester1 instagram: instagram...

Hiking the Coniston Fells in one day : Wainwrights 123 - 129
Переглядів 1756 місяців тому
Our biggest walk during our week in the Lake District. Started by climbing Wetherlam from Coppermines Valley, then up the Prison band to Swirl How, onto Great Carrs, Grey Friar and Brim Fell. Then across Goat's Hawse to Dow Crag and back to Coniston along Walna Scar Road. A long day but really enjoyable.

Great fun watching this video! Great food cooked out on the hills too. Very happy I came across your channel! New sub from us👍🏻
Cheers guys. Glad to have you on board. ATB, Roger
Great to see you back out Roger! Wishing you and Linda a very Merry Christmas and many more wonderful adventures in 2025 🎄🏕️
Thanks Trudy. It was good to get out again. Have yourself a great holiday season. ATB, Roger ( and Linda) 🌲❄️😃
Merry Christmas 🎅
Cheers Scott, Merry Christmas to you!
What a cracking night out in your new tent Roger, and a fabulous meal too. Sounds like you have some lovely plans for next year. Best wishes to you and Linda for the festive season 🎄
Thanks John. Needed that break after weeks (and weeks!) of house renovations. Best wishes, Roger
Merry Christmas Roger and Linda, great to catch up with you. I checked out your location and did walk by there a couple of years ago with my son in law. Yes I struggled with the stove too but have noticed it has developed a bit of memory in it’s shape and goes together a little easier, I’ve been very impressed how quick it boils Compared to my old fuel stove. Your new tent does look very good, I saw a couple of the x mids in real life and wasn’t keen. Happy new year Roger. 🍻🎄
I really like the space in the X-Dome but too early to tell that much about it despite seeing some "full reviews" on UA-cam. I'll probably stick to my other tents until the drafts coming through the mess are a bit warmer.😃 I am impressed with the stove once it's assembled, no doubt I'll get the knack with more uses. Merry Xmas to you and yours, thanks for the support this year. ATB, Roger
Great seeing you out again mate. Hope the house is all finished now. Have a great Xmas and New Year. Will have to arrange another camp out in the new year 👍🏻
Kitchen/Diner is done - just the 2nd Bedroom and Living Room to go, neither of which are much more than redecoration . (Thankfully!) Would be good to get together again sometime. Have good holiday season mate. ATB, Roger
Good to see you out, Roger. You can't beat cooking some real food on a camp, especially a Xmas dinner; I'm hoping to do the same on Boxing day. It would be great to see you walking the SWCP, it's a beautiful hike. All the best, and have yourself a great Christmas.
Thanks Ryan. Felt good to be out after so long, sometimes life has other plans than wild camping! We're hoping to get on the SWCP just after Easter when things open up again. Have a great Xmas - and a good camp on Boxing day. ATB, Roger
Best wishes for 2025! How do you rate the Dome 1?
Cheers. Too soon to say anything much about the tent. I was very impressed with the room in it, both floor size and the amount of headroom. Obviously very light, also easy to pitch and felt very solid once pegged out though the conditions didn't test it at all really. I bought it really for late Spring to early Autumn but couldn't resist taking it on this trip. Best wishes for the New Year - and a Happy Xmas!. ATB, Roger
Slurps and heavily microphoned up swallows really make my hackles rise 😂 All the best for 2025
Love the Santa hat Roger 😁 What a lovely way to enjoy Christmas dinner. And happy new tent.. not sure about the stove mind! Have a lovely Christmas & looking forward to seeing you both on the SW coast path. ATB! Sue
Yeah the stove is bit of a faff! First impressions of the tent are good but we'll see after a few nights. Have a great Xmas and New Year - looking forward to seeing what you get up to next year. ATB, Roger
Good to see you back on the hills Roger 👌🏻 new kit and a fab meal (now that is the way to have a Christmas 🎄 dinner) You and Linda have a great festive season mate 🤠👍🎄 ATB Simon
Thanks Simon. It was a bit better than a dehydrated one! Best seasonal wishes to you and yours.
its nice to see you back again my friend
Thanks Ian. Really good to get a night out at last.
Merry Christmas to you both, Thank you, for all your vlogs, producing and editing appreciated,
Many thanks for your support Christopher. Best of the season to you.
I find the stove very difficult to put together too. I’m assuming there is a knack but I’m yet to find it!
As you say there has to a trick there somewhere, maybe we'll find out one day. 😀
Nice hile and video 👍 😊
Thank you 👍 all the best for the holidays and New Year.
Nice one Rodger. I’m temped by the tent but hope they might bring out a ‘solid’ version. Looks able to take a beating and lightweight too. I can’t be bothered with haute cuisine it’s always a cheap Mac n cheese mug shot or pot noodle. A do admire your skills though. Atb
Thanks Pete. There is a solid version promised for next year I believe, also a 2P at some point. The meal was a bit of a departure from the norm to be honest but just thought it was a bit of fun. Thanks for supporting my little channel this year, ATB, Roger
My son contacted Dan and he said there is a solid coming out in the summer
Very great Christmas meal (loving the wine being backed). Merry Christmas!!!
Cheers Mike. Happy Christmas mate.
Glad to see you .happy Christmas to you and yours .nice tent
Thank Mark. Merry Xmas to you and yours. ATB, Roger
Merry Christmas 🎉❤
Thanks Tia
Loved the Christmas dinner in a tent and santa hat. Merry Christmas to you and Linda. Look forward to more content in 2025!
Cheers Andrew. Thanks for watching. Merry Xmas to you and yours. ATB, Roger
Great videos! Love the look of the tent and have recently ordered one from big sky direct. How long did yours take to arrive? I’ve heard nothing for about a week. Cheers
@@johnsonpt2 When I ordered mine they had stock in UK and it took a bit over a week as far as I remember. Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoy your tent when it comes.
Really liked this video. I live only about 4 or 5 miles (as the crow flies) from where you filmed this, and I always planned a camp trek to Fur Tor but circumstances interceded and I'll never be able to manage it. Dartmoor is always deceptive, just when you think you are on a path, there's a bog, the OS maps are quite deceptive showing fording places that don't exist etc. Thanks for filming this, at least I know what I missed. Incidentally, the most "remote place" on Dartmoor is somewhere between Cut Hill and Fur Tor, but not quite sure where that is.
Thanks Chris. It was a fair old trek up the river and then through the bog! Sorry to hear your treks are curtailed. I did look up the most remote place on the moor, it's apparently near one end of the peat pass there. Thanks for watching, all the best, Roger
I was wondering where you'd got to Roger, lovely to see you back. And you're on Strava! Hope you & Linda are both doing well. A very moody couple of days.. watching from a (finally) snow covered N. Yorks. It's a long time in a tent, takes dedication in Winter 👍 Looking forward to a bit of singing from you next time 😉 Ah, well - see you next time. All the best - Sue
Great cook up in the beacons Roger 🏴🏔️🏔️👌🏻 And definitely the place to be to get that clear space before the mayhem 🙏🏼 All the best mate Simon 🤠👍
Cheers Simon, hopefully it won't be too long before I can out again. ATB, Roger
Great to see you back out Roger, thanks for sharing. We’ve missed watching your video’s over the past month ⛺️
Thanks Trudy. I missed getting out more than I thought I would to be honest. I was a bit worried I'd forgotten how to do it! ATB, Roger
Great video mates new sub
Thanks for the sub! And thanks for watching, ATB, Roger
Such wonderful areas to get out to!! A marvelous way to get a reset for sure! Keep well and have a great week!
Thank you! You too!
Ive just ordered this tentvaftercwatching this and a couple of orher videos of it in use in uk conditions . I noticed you seem to have a ground sheet there, is that the one durston supply or just a shert of plastic youre using,
Hi Andrew - the ground sheet in this video is one I made from Tyvek, It was about 2-3 inches smaller than the fly all round. Since then I bought the Durston ground sheet which just fits under the inner tent. I now use a square of Tyvek in the large end each vestibule to put my stuff on, usually bag /boots / wet stuff in one and food cookset etc in the other. Thanks for watching, I'm sure you'll enjoy the tent. ATB, Roger
Great seeing you out again. Won’t be long until the white stuff 🤞🏻
Thanks Darren. Yes, looking forward to proper winter.❄
Nice hike and wild camp Roger. Thank you for sharing and wishing you a great day snd a happy week 😊Take care 😊
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching, ATB, Roger
Biscuits & Cheese for the win. Glad you're okay and can't wait to hear about the kitchen! Sorry it wasn't a great weather experience but nice to get away from it all. What do you do with the water? Do you boil it or put a tablet in it or something?
Hi Mike, kitchen should be done in a couple of weeks with luck. Water wise I have a Sawyer Squeeze filter that takes pretty much all the nasties out. Screws onto the water bag and you squeeze the water through it.
@@thewanderingforester that's a good idea. I did wonder, but that makes sense and is cool and easy :)
Very happy camping
Thank you. It was a good night out.

Cracking video again. Itchy feet here! Did you park down by the big car park for this route?
Thanks Lloyd. I parked in the layby where the guys park for the Mach Loop watching the planes going by. it's at SH 753 136.
Only ever been to the Peak District once about 8 years ago, we stopped for 3 days and had 4 days of none stop rain, so never been back. Great views and the heather looked great and hopefully you get a good couple of sunny days in the lakes for Linda's birthday. I hare driving at the best of time but for me the dive to the lakes in over the Moors but the drive to the Peaks is down the A1M, so another reason I have not been back. You got some amazing evening colours in the skies once you pitched up and shame about Linda's shoulder, it's neck with Mrs Metalman. Oh I have had those comments before, you should not have done this of that, you do not take thing seriously when out (I never take anything seriously) and I am a proud fair weather hiker and camper, I never respond either, just delete, block and laugh! Nice morning to wake up too and if there is a good sunrise, I always like to be up for it. Enjoy the Lakes, cheers Alan
Thanks Alan. We've been to the Peak District a couple of times for long weekends walking but never camped before. It's a trek up the M5/M6 before going cross-country so a bit of a mission. The Lakes is even farther of course but once you're past Manchester its not too bad. We had a couple of days in Keswick, knocked off 5 of the smaller Wainwrights and had a couple of good dinners out. Linda's happy which is always good. All the best, Roger
Great to see you up here. Long way for you to come.Looks like a great camp. Ignore the negative comments. I retire in 2 years. When I think of retirement, instantly I think of YOUR camps. Positively you are an influencer. ATB
Not sure about being an "influencer" but if anything I do helps people then I'd be glad about it. I'll be back to the Peak District when I can. Thanks for watching. ATB, Roger
WoW! Absolutely Stunning And Breathtaking! Have An Incredible Weekend! Cheers!🥂🤩❤️✨
@@JUANORQUIO Thank you! Just got back from a birthday trip for Linda, had a great time.
Roger!.. Thank you. I’m sitting in the rain in France, a few days away from returning to the UK. You have made me long for the heather. As it happens, I’m hoping to meet my cousin in the Peak District on the way home. I’ll be sharing this video with him, it’s lovely. Firstly, glad you had such a beautiful experience in glorious weather. Secondly, I hope Linda’s shoulder is on the mend & have a lovely time in the lakes. And finally…. Bloody trollers 😡 why oh why would anyone pick on your videos?!?! I can learn a lot from you, you’re a natural. Keep ‘em coming! All the best 😊 Sue 👍
Thanks Sue, it's lovely comments like that that makes all the effort worthwhile. We're in Keswick for the next couple of days on the Wainwright bagging trail ( not filming though) - been given the Bridal Suite in the hotel! Safe travels, Roger
Looked a good one (not been to the peaks to often myself (definitely makes a change dosnt it)) and it’s kind big the home and cradle of the right to roam too Kinda ! Hope Linda’s shoulder get better soon to get a camp in before winter 🙏🏼 And ignore the troll’s they are just fishing 🎣 for reaction mate Any how enjoyable camp ⛺️ Best regards Simon 🤠👍🏔️
Thanks Simon. I've been meaning to get up the Peak for a while and managed to pick a good night for it. Trolls are a pain, but don't bother with me usually. ATB, Roger
very nice...hope you enjoy your Wainwright bagging break...Shame about the snarky comment...i have had one or two..i just ignore the pratts
Sat in Keswick at the moment! Been up up Great Mell fell, amazing view for a little'un. Cheers Roger

Glad you enjoyed it. A long trek from home, but worth it. ATB, Roger
Wonderful to see all the heather in bloom...beautiful!!! Hope Linda gets feeling well soon...and make sure you treat her to a fantastic Birthday!! Happy Birthday, Linda...cheer up!! What a fantastic day to wake up to!! Beautiful!! A wonderful experience!!
She gets a day out in her favourite part of the country and dinner in her favourite restaurant. Can't do more than that. And yes, the morning on this trip just made my heart sing. ATB, Roger
Great video Roger. Funny about those trolls, by the time one gets to our age we can tell what these clowns are up to in a nano second. The reason we got to our age is because we use common sense. Good on you mate. Atb
Cheers Pete. Yeah, experience does come with age. Many years ago I'd have had a right go at the troll, these days just water off a duck's back 😉. ATB, Roger
Perhaps if people realised how much work is involved in putting out this content for the benefit of others they might think before criticising. I’m 64 and still enjoy these places and will be up there this week but there are people watching these who are not able but still experience what they once had through these videos. Bailing is no reflection on experience or equipment it’s just personal choice either for comfort or safety. Thankyou for showing us your trips!!
It does take a fair bit of time to produce the videos but I enjoy the process so it's not a hardship. It does make the hikes a bit longer though. 😄. Enjoy your trip to the Peaks, and thanks for watching. ATB, Roger
Great video, thank you. Its nice to see you in my neck of the woods, Ill be camping just behind where you did on Tuesday all being well (well 700 feet behind!)
