Wildcamping in Brecon Beacons: When Winds Ruin the Adventure
What has the Met office got against me? I checked the weather forecast a couple of hours before I left home - in the Brecon Beacons of South Wales winds were predicted at low 20's mph with high 20's / low 30's mph gusts. Expected to be partially cloudy and no rain expected. That's not what happened!

Our biggest walk during our week in the Lake District. Started by climbing Wetherlam from Coppermines Valley, then up the Prison band to Swirl How, onto Great Carrs, Grey Friar and Brim Fell. Then across Goat's Hawse to Dow Crag and back to Coniston along Walna Scar Road. A long day but really enjoyable.

    That would have been a great pitch if it wasn't so windy. No point is losing a night's sleep for nothing, so the right choice I think to bail out. That Toco tent costs £17 at the moment and cheap sleeping bags can be had for less than £10. I suspect some people regard this sort of stuff as disposable and have no respect for the environment.

      @@thecampingastronomer8554 I'm planning on a return visit when the weather is better, I was hoping for a nice sunrise shining on the escarpment. And £17? - that's amazing. I couldn't report what the lady taking it down actually said about the ones who left it there. Thanks for watching John.

    Nice video Rodger shame you had to bail, I’ve been there and done that you made the right decision. I laughed when you mentioned the OEX phoxx tent, I spotted loads on my last camp weekend just gone and actually mentioned it on my video. Don’t know what the answer is with these “assholes” leaving rubbish everywhere? I’m seeing more and more rubbish in the Lake District, it’s like people just don’t care anymore and do what they like without any consideration to others or the environment. ATB Karl

      Thanks Karl. I think the tent would have been ok although it was on the edge of what it would take, I just didn't see the point of staying up there all night in that racket. Hopefully once the holiday season is over the assholes will go home for the winter. ATB, Roger

      We really like ours. (Also have the 2P for when Linda comes) I think somewhere around 40mph is the top end of wind I'd want to be in it. Can be a little tricky if the pitch is on the small side or particularly bumpy but there are ways around it.

    Made a good decision there. I was out in my X mid the other month and the wind suddenly picked up out of the blue at about 3:30. I love the xmid but I don't think it's meant for winds on summits so packed up and left just around first light. Might look at getting something more suitable for winds etc. Maybe a tunnel tent or something. I don't intend to go out in high winds but sometimes they just pop up !

One tip is to take a path that goes up slightly above the gill up to Lingy Hut. It goes off to the right just above the mine workings at the bottom and goes directly from the hut at the top.

      We were a bit too tired to appreciate the view from Dow Crag across Goats Water to the Old Man to be honest. But you're right, it's a great spot

    Always like a Dartmoor video. I had a walking pole disappear on Oke Tor one night, when I found it, on the other side of the rocks, it had bite marks in the handle, this i put down to Mr Fox 😁 my profile photo is on Oke Tor also. Keep hiking 👍

    Tidy pitch there! I still can't get mine like that and find it keeps flapping in my face once thr winds get above 15mph or so. Hopefully we will see summer soon and the need for a 4 season tent all year long won't ne as necessary!

    • @thewanderingforester
      @thewanderingforester Місяць тому

      I've been using the "diagonal pitch" method and it seem to work. You need to have a groundsheet or the inner attached to use it. I peg out the two corners with the short connections to the inner and then the other two corners to get even tension on the two sides. It's on UA-cam somewhere. Agree about the weather - hopeless lately!

    My dear brother Paul and I camped on Pen Y Gadair Fawr in 2010 in May. Come morning there were flurries of snow. Yeah, it was cold. A nice fresh one up there Roger. Sometimes camps are about meditation, fresh air, and not the views. You got some of the former. All the best. Mark

    Another nice watch mate. There’s a nice little spot around 100 yards south east of the summit with a nice view over hatterall ridge. Not that you would have had a view 😂

    Nice one Roger n Linda. Bet you had your pockets stuffed with doubloons 😅. I use one stick when filming. Get yer mrs to stick one end in side pocket and lash with bungee or side straps on most bags. You can pull it out like a holster when needed. Atb

    • @thewanderingforester
      @thewanderingforester Місяць тому

      I do use one stick on easier terrain sometimes. I see a couple of US hikers who fix the camera to the top of a trekking pole so might look into that as well. No doubloons yet I'm afraid 🤣
