  • The most remote hill top in mainland Wales is Tyle Garw on Mynydd Du, the Black Mountain area of Bannau Brycheiniog/Brecon Beacons. It's 468 metres high and 4.875 Kilometres from the nearest road. Unfortunately there is no parking on that road so the nearest point of access of around 7-8K away. With a very strong and bitter easterly wind blowing across the top and a lack of shelter I decided to camp just below the hill - so I have some unfinished with Tyle Garw!

What a cracking video! Real down to earth stuff. Strong winds, Babies Heads (tussocks), pitching in the dark, missing the sunrise. Admitting to knackeredness. I'm inspired.

What an adventure for you on your wild camp in Wales. I share your views on windy weather conditions. Know the feeling of facing challenges against fierce winds.

I’ve walked along the Beacons Way over Garreg las and remember looking at Tyle Garw thinking it looks like the moon because of all the rocks in between me and it!

It has got some interesting rock formations on it. Long little terraces with 3ft high faces. Thanks for watching, Roger

Saw you on paul mesner, the age you started the channel, so subbed to support you as you are a motivator to others, and you look great for your age very mobile.

Thanks for that. Just decent genes I guess. Though I've been walking in the hill pretty much all my life, only started filming it in 2021.

That must have been some adventure, That area can be tough going off the main bridal track. I actully camped right next to Sinc Giedd september 1993, I remember it well it was my first two night camp in the Beacons. 👌 To see the whirlpool and the water disappearing under ground is one of the reason I remember the trip ATB 😉

Rough hardly gets there to be honest The first bit of "off-piste" was awful! Must go back before the rains stop and the stream dries up.

Blimey! That looked wild country Roger.....quite Pennine in appearance and character and we also have vast tracts of those horrible Molinia tussocks too. I hope you make it back to the swallow hole, I'd like to see that. ATB, Chris

Yeah, unfinished business there I think. That grass is a bugger. There's a Wellington Bomber crash near there I'd like to find as well. Thanks for watching, Roger

Love it Roger - full view mate all the way. Gnarly in but you managed. Ah, the spirit of remoteness abounded there - I don't blame you for dropping down and pitching elsewhere. You were close enough. Good going. Mark

Thanks Mark. There's quite a lot of not very much out there on Mynydd Du. I'll approach it from a different direction next time!

I hiked the dragons back and camped waun fach last night - the fields by castel Dinas there are insanely boggy despite looking clean. Like above boot deep despite looking like grass. I can’t imagine how boggy it was round where you were!

The whole world seems to be a bog lately! Apart from the bogs the streams were really full as well. Thanks for watching, Roger

Yes, plenty of space to get lost in thought out there. Very different to most of the Beacons. Thanks for watching, Roger

I love my atom 40. Got rid of a 60 litre and fit the same stuff in. I admit it’s a squeeze with full winter kit but I find if I put my tent in vertically in one of the side pockets and the xtherm in the other it’s fine. Also I put my zlite under the external bungees. Even in winter I only carry 10-11 kg. I save weight also with lone peak altras runners so comfortable I hardly ever swap them. (I save over a kg on my heavy boots. Most of the time they cope allied with sealskinz socks. Even when the water gets it my feet do stay warm Hope this helps or at least give one campers method. Atb

      @thewanderingforester  5 місяців тому

I can get my winter kit into my Mo50 but it's a squeeze I can't be bothered with. It's the bulky winter sleeping bag that makes the difference. I'm still working on reducing the bulk of some of my kit. I wore Lone Peaks all last year but the soles wore out very quickly. I now have Topos which have the same footbox but vibram soles. I have been wearing my boots lately due to the extreme bogginess this winter. Thanks for your comments. ATB, Roger

@@thewanderingforester Agreed. I need light weight and comfort (old age etc 67). Yes the Altra does wear quickly, but so comfy and light. I’ve a small foot but very wide. Hard to find a good fit. Topos look good thanks Roger. We all feed of each other. Atb

Sinc y giedd? I walked most of the way there in the rain once and found the landscape so bloody bleak and somehow more spooky or unsettling than the rest of the beacons I decided not to camp there
