Broadblue Rapier 550 in the Solent
Here’s a short video of the Broadblue Rapier 550 catamaran, shot on a trip from Chichester Harbour to Lymington. Tide against all the way, but we had 15 knots of breeze and an average speed of 8 knots. Lovely weather and easy to handle with just two aboard, although we had three on this trip. Great sail in the sunshine.

Lovely little vessel. Probably sold already.
Well thought out with some very clever solutions to use the available space perfectly!
Beautiful design, but there are many hard corners. Has any consideration been given to incorporating rounded contours?
over 200 nM a day. that's great, sleek design, does it have dagger boards? - can it be customized to incorporate dagger boards? does it hoby horse often in chop? and how narrow can it point?
If the cat was to be inverted would the excape windows be undewater.
Every time I see something on this boat, I love it even more. I can’t imagine though, what the shipping costs to the Pacific Northwest coast of the U.S. would be.
what is the headroom on the saloon?
What do you keep in the cabins that we can't see them? The nuclear codes? Area 51? You repeat the same things 4 times instead. I wanna see the cabins and the heads...
This makes the most sense of any sailing boat I’ve seen. I hope this concept catches on!
Thank you!
Thank you @marxug1
Very nice boat and a great presentation.
ignorant website to look at the occasions boats you have yo create an account ,bloody gestapo
Love the boat…it was/is ahead of its time…couple of questions : - why the anchor at the foot of the longeron and not at the end? Doesn’t that make anchoring more difficult? Does the boat move over the anchor while swinging? - placement of liferaft? Isn’t it hidden behind the dinghy in an emergency? - where do you store food and provisions?
Thank you so much for your question @donaldvanvliet9039 R550 anchor position The anchor is positioned where it is to reduce the weight forward and help reduce pitching. Keeping the anchor and all the chain weight as close to the centre of pitch reduces the tendency for the boat to continue pitching and improves the performance by reducing lost energy. All modern catamarans without a solid foredeck must use a bridle to transfer the anchoring loads into the bow and so once anchor is deployed, a bridle is set and there’s no discernible difference in the swinging of the boat at anchor.
Would love to see videos of it doing an ocean passage.
Beautiful boat Mark! Marty and Carla
Easy square flat shapes means they can be replaced anywhere, are they double glaze
Summer here boys and girls .
I love this cat
Rapier 400 just looks like an outdated Seawind.
Thank you for your comment regarding the comparison with a Seawind; The Rapier 400 is designed as a performance cruiser and is therefore much lighter than most, if not all production competitors including the Seawind, Lagoon, Nautitech and Leopard. The lightweight and lower installed height of the sail plan allows for a better power to weight ration than any other model in its class. The open plan layout of the Rapier 400 is much more usable than some other brands because there isn’t a large door sweeping across the floor on its way into the coachroof, limiting the use and furniture in this area and the central helm station makes visibility from the helm to all corners of the boat very easy.
More videos of Broadblue boats please. Can't wait to see the 425, in the flesh.
It all fun games and design principles.....and then a wharram blasts by you and you realize money spent doesn't mean speed
Maybe a more normal internal marine wheel instead of the logitech g29 wheel would make it look nicer tho.
Has the 550 gone past 25 knots?
Seems like a good boat for cooler climates
Most cats are setup for tropical cruises that looks like a good cold weather boat
Made in England ;-)
My wife and I will be in contact very soon..we have been looking and shopping for 4 years.. this is the configuration we want
Don't get me wrong, I love Broadblues but this video suggests your specifically designed production facility is a field? 😂
Very nice! What wind did you have and what speed did you reach?
This was mid-Atlantic so typical trade wind sailing of 15 to 25knots true. With this sail, apparent wind was around 6-8kn and so boat speed was between 8-18knots. Highest daily run was 300 miles.
That’s a nice sail to have
Very informative, thank you
Can you upload a video using a parasail.. I'm very interested. I absolutely love your in cab sailing design.. my wife and I are looking.
Yes we can certainly do that. If you want to chat with Mark, you can drop him an email to sales@broadblue.com
We’ve just uploaded a video with the parasail. Take a look and let us know if you have any questions.
I found it a little funny that there was a constant leak behind the person speaking through out the video
Beautiful boat though
How long does it take to build?
I got this from a website enquiry, The waiting time for delivery will depend on the size of the order book at the time you place your order but right now an order placed today would see delivery in spring 2025
@@stephenmason8172 Thank you.
Omfg, Wow! COME ON LOTTERY!
Beautiful design and layout...It helps maximize the use of the space... 👍😎👍
Price in US Dollars?
Hey Todd, thanks for your question. We have a dedicated build facility that enables us to build new boats within a 12-18 month period that are semi-bespoke. Our clients are able to enjoy a level of customisation. Email me and we can then work through your "wish list" and I will then be able to provide a price based on that specification. You can reach me, Mark, at sales@broadblue.com. For more details, click this link to our website www.broadblue.com/broadblue-cruising-catamarans. Have a great week!
Great design. Internal cockpit, geat for stormy day. But i wonder if there is an accident on the sail, isn't it will difficult to move to go to outside. Is there any door direct to bow/front outside of this boat?
You don't actually mention what resin you are using...that would be very helpful to future buyers to know. So is the a 100% epoxy e-glass boat, or did you go with the less expensive vinyl ester?
Ich finde den cat super ein längeres Video wäre schön
Damn, I think I'm in love!
Strange that as an cat. builder, you doesn't know the acrylic are not being utilized as windows in boats. They are polycarbonate, many times liter then glass!
Acrylics and polycarbonate are lighter, and less expensive but they have a thermal expansion rate 5 times that of glass, causing window leaks after a short time and they craze (even polycarbonate) and their life is much less than glass. That’s why almost all Broadblues use fully bonded toughened and hardened glass. The only exception is the Rapier 400 where the lighter weight of the polycarbonate wins out.
One of things I LOVE about this design and some of the Rapier’s I’ve seen is that they don’t have an outside sitting area. Yes, I love sailing, but I’m not the sort of person to sit outside for a meal. How revolting - to fight with the wind and weather while trying to eat. Please, give me a break! This means outside seating is a waste of space for me. As a writer and someone that works remotely, I need a nice indoor area where I can work. That’s far more important than sitting in the rain to have a sandwich. The 550 is a tad big for me, but I love the concept! - and please keep making these great videos.
Unless you're sitting in the Caribbean eating your sandwich ;). More vids to come!
I’ve always felt that sailing on a monohull is like putting 5 people in a 2 person pup-tent, on a hill. A cat just seems more like a small flat (apartment) on the water. And as I want to liveaboard, cats make more sense.
What a beautiful cat. That would be perfect for my solo-sailing dream.
Dreams are good 😊 What’s your timeline?
Hi Mark, interesting video of my Rapier 400, some things you mentioned I did not know. You also mentioned that all broadblue boats have safety glass windows, this is not the case on my rapier 400 they are acrylic.
love this design, would it work for a smaller version, take the design aspects but into a sub 50 ... maybe 44 for example.
We can share the Rapier 400 for you to take a look at www.broadblue.com/performance-catamarans/rapier-400
I always liked the Gemini but the lay out in the 346 I prefer!
VERY interested in this boat.. I would like to see it underway in passage. the clap if you will, the slap of those waves against a cat... and any leaky windows or ports. there are just some really egregious issues to consider with many of the cats on the market, I've been impressed with broadblue, lets see her in action! is it a big ask to get a view of her on temperamental blue waters
Better headline is “launch of a 3d rendering if a new 425 catamaran{.
Argh, yes! We get you. Launching will come later after build :)
I favor front helm so I like catamarans like Rapier.
What's the cost of this 425?
Email Mark Jarvis and he can provide costs based on your specific spec. Email: sales@broadblue.com
