Children made my wife and I work harder and invest heavily, particularly because one child is Autistic. The consequence of our actions resulted in more income earning assets (rental properties and stocks) for our upcoming retirement. If we didn't have kids there would be no urgency to invest heavily and probably spend more on lifestyle stuff like Cruises and expensive car.

Quite surprised that property prices n rental is relatively high given Krabi's huge land mass n low population. The price of some of the newer developments is comparable to Phuket, which has far better infrastructure n facilities .

With regards to housing, a lot of Expats get housing outside of their base salaries. An International school teacher, for example, will have a starting salary of $35,000 a month plus $15,000 housing allowance.

Internet cost is only $180 for 1G line. Mobile phone is around $120. Cars are also very affordable if you buy used. You can buy a 2018 Mazda CX5 with 70,000 km for less than HK$140,000. There are lots of good used cars for $80,000. Gas, tunnel fees and parking costs are probably roughly the same as in Singapore. We don't have COE in HK so it's way cheaper to own a car in HK

As an Atheist, Malaysia is not a place that seems welcoming, Penang sounds great and very afordable but not somewhere I can consider, that's a shame, religion sucks.

I applied for the 'old' SMM2H late last year just before it expired ( deposit just 150k RM .. just 45k SGD, 33K USD approx ) The SMM2H is reasonable - either old or new scheme Mainland MM2H : too expensive and requires property purchase with ties and conditions .. total $$ commitment is too high in my opinion ... also West Malaysia have a track record of chopping and changing the rules all the time .. which leads to lack of trust from foreigners , and jacking up the costs too much .. looks very grabby. Plus mandated agency fees are excessive I just hope SMM2H retains ability to reside in West Malaysia Thailand renewable annual visa is arguably better than West Malaysia MM2H - MY Government acts like they have no competition for retirees .. wrong assumption .. they previously jacked up the required monthly income to 40k RM and nobody applied for the scheme .. oops.

Hi Fran & John. Most useful video as my husband and I will be relocating to Penang and will need to apply the LTSVP for him. However he will need to travel to SG for meetings and work during the 6 months of the application & approved (fingers crossed!) phases. Anyone you know who mught have done this?
