  • Welcome back to The Green Yard! It's been getting cooler here in Phoenix and we're projected to start seeing those winter temperatures in the next few weeks. Before our tropical fruiting and flowering trees get covered up for the winter I wanted to showcase how they have been doing the last year or two. In this video I talk specifically about our Red Hog Plum or Jocote Tree and how it has been doing the last year. While the tree features is amazing and big, it is not the original Jocote that was planted last November. Unfortunately our other Jocote tree did not make it through our extra cold winter last year. My goal with this video is not to be misleading but instead share my experience growing Jocote over the last year. In Phoenix, the biggest issue with our Red Hog Plum is our winter temperatures. As soon as the temperature drops below 50 degrees this tree will suffer. Fortunately the new tree I planted in July seems to be better acclimated to it's spot and has thrived even after seeing 40 degree temperatures the other day. It seems that these trees need a lot of mulch, sulfur and fertilizer (I use fish emulsion) to be successful in our climate. They also require afternoon shade the first few years and cold protection. I'm hoping to have a very successful winter season with our Red Hog Plum/Jocote and to be able to update all of you either in the spring or after two years. Hello @vianeygastelum569, thank you for watching and commenting! I got our Jocote from a local tropical tree nursery called Greenlife by Shamus O'leary. I know that he has some in stock now and they do love to be planted in the summer. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! In the Tropical Food Forest part of The Green Yard we have two types of bananas planted together. We have both a Blue Java and Dwarf Namwah plants here. In other parts of the green yard I have much more mature bananas that have produced multiple racks of bananas this year. I also have a Dwarf Cavendish in that part of the yard. The bananas in the other part of the yard get full sun all day long and are doing very well. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
