Council Bluffs' oldest graves aren't in Fairview Cemetery overlooking the Missouri River valley, they are at Lewis Central's Titan Hill School overlooking Tastee Treat. Construction of the middle school had barely began in 1975 when workers uncovered human remains. The county coroner was called in, but if there was any foul play, it had happened over two centuries earlier, and the matter was tu...

Every town has its past, but it really seems Council Bluffs and Southwest Iowa have touched more history of regional and even national significance than many areas of the Great Plains. Perhaps not all those people creating our history intended to come here, but the reality is we were right on the path of where people were going. This has left us with a incredibly rich heritage. History shouldn'...

Omaha became known as a major distribution hub of Hollywood film and promotional materials from the 1930s-1980s through the work of FEPCO, a company owned and operated by a Council Bluffs woman, and Modern Sound Pictures. Much of the collections of these once international companies is now archived in Council Bluffs. In this video Kelli Bello, production manager of Council Bluffs' Firehouse Let...
Rage of the River

The Missouri River has flooded countless times, before and since 1952. But 70 years ago the "Greatest Generation," which had already experienced the Great Depression, World War II, and the Korean War dug its heels in and said: "No." Four days and nights over forty thousand volunteers stacked sandbags, creating and expanding a nineteen mile levee in a battle so tense Edward R. Murrow broadcast h...

The 1960s were tough on downtowns. Suburban sprawl sent buyers to the spacious parking lots and gleaming new stores of the shopping malls. In Council Bluffs it was even worse; an incredible 77% of business was being lost to Omaha. In an attempt to counter this the city embarked on one of the boldest urban renewal projects in the country. This video looks at that urban renewal plan, Midlands Mal...

Lincoln Monument in Council Bluffs

Perhaps the single event that most shaped the future of Council Bluffs, Omaha, and much of Iowa and Nebraska was a visit by Abraham Lincoln in August, 1859. In October, 1911 a monument to honor Lincoln and commemorate that visit was erected atop a bluff at the summit of Oakland Avenue. Local lore holds this is the very spot Lincoln stood when pondering the best place from which to start the tra...

So true! I've lived here my whole life, and until going the Historical Society never knew there was anything odd about our jail. When it was in service the county merely referred to it as the Pottawattamie County Jail; no hint that it was unlike any other jail!

Urban renewal did nothing but gut the soul of Council Bluffs. After having lived in the area most of my life, I had to move out of the area in 2019. I finally visited this year to see a very tired little town with little to no desire to improve anything. The changes over the last five years were noticeable and stark.....and none of them good.

Heartbreak at 4:22. So many beautiful old American buildings were demolished and replaced by cold, efficient blobs. I hope some of the growth in Omaha will have a spillover effect on Council Bluffs and it will thrive again.

My childhood grocery store was Jim and Dean's, my dad was close friend with the owner Jim, who many people never knew actually lived with his wife underneath the grocery store! I know because I went down there ( the home) many times with my dad and made Jim laugh when I was finding it so amusing that he never ever had to leave because his home, job, and his grocery store all in one place!
