Thank you, I always enjoy when you post new content. Almost all of the before pictures seemed more inviting than the after pictures. It seems like Council Bluffs has lost a lot of its small town feel and what made it stand out from Omaha. Now they want to be the home of the 300' high interstate interchanges. The first time I took I-80 East to I-29 North on my motorcycle I was kind of freaked out by how high in the air I was.
My beloved friend and mentor was born and raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She died at far too young an age 17 years ago. I found this video today. I wish she could have still been alive so she could have told me her stories of growing up in Council Bluffs.
As an enthusiast of Original Transcon RR era/Manifest Destiny, I can image Grenville Dodge, Chief Engineer of UP, with his cat on shoulder, walking to his bank office, 30+ years after Completion. For those who have not visited The Dodge House, it will take you back in time, recalling Grenville's colleague's such as Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, etc. visiting his home, and shared memories of past historical events. Thanks.Subscribed.
Progress is a fact of life and can be painful when the old familiar structures are torn down. Driving on Broadway will never have the same feel as it had in the mid 20th century 😢 Thanks for the memories.
Thanks for putting this together. It’s sad that so much walkability and beautiful old buildings were torn down for a place to park the almighty car. That brings in no property revenue, either. City planners should look at sites like Strong Towns and UA-cam channels like Citynerd to rethink how they could keep the good parts of CB.
out of the whole city these idiots only preserved one block of our wonderful city .they tore down ogden hotel a historical landmark that tells you what kind of morons run this city
Crazy to see these old photos, i just recently moved from council bluffs after almost 20 years. My mom is part of the fairmount park neighborhood association.
Does anybody think that they have tried to improve Council Bluffs but in the process really just tore down a lot of interesting stuff and didn’t put back anything in its place that was useful for the people of this town
We were supposed to get a new drive-in and I miss the derby to serves. There was a root beer stand on 16th that they tore down. There’s so much stuff missing from this town that’s not here anymore and nobody helps out with realizing that.
I am happy to see that those old clunky buildings have been torn down. The NOW pictures are a thousand times better than the old. Keep up the modernization of the town.
I remember as a Child my Mom taking me with her to ship at Kresge store or Ranks and going with my Parents to eat at Ewalds cafe or Schultz's truck stop on West Broadway.or A&W on West Broadway and the car hops the best Root beer floats in Council Bluffs.
Wish it was still the same such wonderful memories all those changes didn't need to happen that mall they made is a eyesore it not even used we are not a big city What a sad day when they changed it and it not who we are we didn't need that 😕 we was happy the way it was
Urban renewal did nothing but gut the soul of Council Bluffs. After having lived in the area most of my life, I had to move out of the area in 2019. I finally visited this year to see a very tired little town with little to no desire to improve anything. The changes over the last five years were noticeable and stark.....and none of them good.
Heartbreak at 4:22. So many beautiful old American buildings were demolished and replaced by cold, efficient blobs. I hope some of the growth in Omaha will have a spillover effect on Council Bluffs and it will thrive again.
enjoyed the pictures but it's depressing to see soooo many buildings replaced by parking lots. Seemed like less traffic on the streets as well. People leaving?
its a same,CB has a tiresome habit of constantly tearing down buildings and sometiems bulldozing entire streeets to make way for stupid shit... i personally liked the Bayliss park fountain the way it was, especially at night...god the way the lights iluminated the water was breathtaking...now most of the fountain is made up of that big metal eyesore.
Urban renewal was bold move… and to many it seemed worth the risk at the time. Looking back, however, maybe not so much :). If you haven’t watched the video about the Malls you might want to; it explains some of the decisions that led up to the urban renewal project: ua-cam.com/video/JAMHqSkTgUs/v-deo.html
I so enjoyed the pictures of old CB. It’s sad that they destroyed all the wonderful buildings. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for taking the time to comment.

I am sorry to hear this.
Sad how much history was demolished and now is parking lots or just empty green space.

Man, this is just depressing. So many beautiful old buildings just gone and replaced with empty space or huge boxy buildings. :(

You are very welcome! Glad you enjoyed the memories.

Yes, so very sad
I loved the Coney Island Hot Dogs at The Derby Drive In! Miss that place. Thanks for the great videos!

It looked better back then. So much for progress.

Yeah.
You're a real funny guy.
What time you do back at Boys Town?
I live for these videos.
Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to comment! Much appreciated!

Do you have any photos of the original public library downtown? I loved that place and spent a lot of time there growing up.
I lived there in the mid 80's ❤

Makes me sad 😔

always liked living here
The good old days
Wow. Who came in and destroyed your city!? It’s shocking.

This really makes me hate parking lots
😂😂😂😂 So there is not much of the original buildings left. Hey look, we tore it all down.
I'm not from there and seeing this is dissappinting
All destroyed
Boring and ugly then…boring and ugly now. Except for the casino.
