That was very interesting to see, thanks for posting. I work at a place near the river, we have had our modern day battles with the river where we had to sandbag and take other measures but nothing on this scale.

You have a great point... it was the scale which made the 1952 flood unique, not just in the amount of water, but the extraordinary effort by the "human machine" to contain it. Of course, as it said in the video's description, the people out there laying sandbags and building dikes had just come off the depression and WWII so they probably weren't intimidated easily!

I was only 1 year old, but my dad told stories about being part of the team loading and placing sandbags. It's awesome to see what people can do when they work together towards a common goal. Thanks for the post!

Thanks for taking the time to comment! Glad you enjoyed it. Agreed that response to the flood really shows the power of working together!

Time goes by too fast. Are they gonna do this in 70 years when they talk about the 2011 and 2019 floods?

Our neighbor lady (born in 1900) told us about the 1952 flood. She and her husband were safe on the east side, but they let a west side family store their furniture in their garage.

It would be interesting to know how 2019 compared in terms of highest crest, volume of water and such with 1952. Certainly the area south of CB was devastated in 2019, but apparently it was in 1952 as well. We didn't have space for them in this video but we do have some photos of Hamburg in '52 and it was pretty well covered. Looks like water about half way up the buildings in the downtown area, some places up to the roof line of homes.

@@councilbluffsrevealed4429 shocking sight for sure because of how widespread an area impacted along the Missouri and its tributaries like the Platte, Niobrara and Elkhorn Rivers. There was a lesser episode a few years before and I recall Hamburg losing a fight to rebuild levees higher and having to lower them. 2011?
