Complaining About FFXIV's Gearing (ft. @sharlayanforum)
Doing something a little bit different in this video! We sit down and have a chat with Chris from @sharlayanforum about the gearing systems in FFXIV. This was just a casual conversation without much planning but it was a fun talk!
Note: This was recorded a day or two before the recent Live Letter and announcement of the Chaotic Alliance Raids. We talked a bit about predictions for the savage alliance raids, but the conversation still holds up with the recent announcements.

    I disagree with your view on tank etiquette. If someone wants to pull more mobs for the tank, they should ask first if that's OK for the tank. Also, it's not the tank's "job" to tank. This is a game. If anything here feels like a job, something is going wrong.

    As someone who played summoner at launch and some time from that it was such a shame that the devs never seemingly did what they talked about early on like I am pretty sure I remember them talking about how with each new primal the summoner would get a new egi associated with the primal and then leviathan was gonna come out and there was talks about gettin it as an egi but then it didn't happen but there was sort of a promise that they would give it in a future update but then it never happened and then they changed it so that they wouldn't be doing the new egi releases based on releasing new primals and instead might only add new egi with new lvl caps and new skills.

    Couldn't desagree more about Bakool Ja Ja. I think the problem is he is set up like a very cliche disney like villain, but personally, the moment when his father bash him for failing the trials and you can feel the pain in his voice was very emotional to me. I also understood all the weight he carried on his shoulders and why he acted the way he did, so I enjoyed his story arc, even with all the flaws this exp has. I don't care how much people don't want to admit, but a lot of players were pissed because they weren't the center of attention this time. Wuk Lamat is fine as a character, maybe a little bit way too naive and idealistic, but the fact is people would complain about the WoL not being the protagonist even it was a well liked character like Y'shtola or the siblings. The biggest issue though is, this expansion feels like a content patch story stretched to 40 hours. Also, they really went overboard on the cutscene department.

    The only issue with having materia meld's on job stones is it would increase the amount of materia needed exponentially. I'd rather have materia loadouts. If you had it on the job stone then you'd need to take the amount of materia needed to gear a job now and multiply it by 21. That's waaaaay too much materia IMO. I think you get the best of both worlds with a loadout. Then you get a loadout of materia that can shared between jobs.

    Gearing should just be like FFXI. Go to the place that drops the thing you need and either grind it or fight something hard to get it. Having all of this weekly currency cap and weekly raid cap is boring and lifeless. There should be incentive to do different content rather than a lifeless weekly grindfest every week. FFXI is gated by hard work and skill level, not a weekly cap. Having more choice with gear pieces would be better too. I know that this is incredibly unlikely, but having a meaningful gear system would make this game S tier.

    you should try swapping your mudras to the buttons instead of the d-pad. I keep mine on the left trigger where your AOEs so I can keep constant movement while using them, might make the class feel a bit easier

    As a completionist I'd love nothing more than to bis every role before the next major patch, but it's literally impossible to do so due to weekly tomestones. Having cleared the tier on week 3 I pretty much got all the drops from the raid far sooner than the tome gear, and that's just for my main role. Imagine if you want to play multiple jobs and parties request the role at a much higher item level than you're already are. People justifiably rag on WoW for many things, but the gear progression is far more streamlined for alts, such as a discount to upgrade the gear's item level if any other character got that slot to a level.

      Hello there! I was initially going to react to this defensively, but the more I thought about it, I realized that you're totally right, and I'll own that double standard. After thinking about it more I think that my thoughts are a bit more nuanced on the idea of a system like titanforging than it being objectively terrible all the time, though I didn't do a good job of articulating it here. I think my issues with Titanforgin in WoW was that it was a random system on top of random drops on top of random loot from tables and it was in every slot on the character sheet. This compounding series of random chances lead to a really unsatisfying system that felt like even when i got something to drop it was never an upgrade because it wasn't the right stats, with the right slot, with titanforging. Having some level of determinism would've made the system feel better. In FF, I feel like gear doesn't matter much because I know for a fact that I'll get BiS eventually, so who cares about the drops that come out? This leads to a system where I don't even pay attention to what drops or care about it. Really, I just check a BiS sheet in the Balance and follow it. Injectinging some level of chase or randomness into this system would benefit it. I think my preference lies somewhere between total RNG and total determinism. Maybe set drops with a chance to roll with an additional materia slot or bonus stat, or fights randomly dropping a material that lets me add an extra materia slot, something like that.

      ​​@@sharlayanforumthanks for clarifying! i like your opinions and i subbed to your channel so i was giving you the benefit of the doubt anyway. i was thinking about it for a while too, to try to make sense of it myself, because randomness in loot is fun, but not all the time i'm happy you replied since i was thinking of looping you into this on your channel, where you'd be more likely to see the comment, but referring to two timestamps on a video you did on a friend's channel seemed annoyingly circuitous i'll think more on your reply too because i agree, it is a nuanced situation, and i don't necessarily think there's a double standard. the gear in both games is surrounded by entirely different systems, and more importantly, it's been a long time since MoP titanforging. players' approaches to the game have changed, and our opinions have changed. back then, and in the gameplay context of WoW, titanforging was awful. but in modern ffxiv, handled the right way (ie. not necessarily a strict "your item, by chance, is a DPS upgrade") would be a fun incentive. the gear could, for example, have a chance to come with haste, so your entire rotation is faster, but it comes with commensurately lower other DPS stats. you can then choose to have a faster playstyle, but it isn't necessarily a DPS increase (though in some scenarios, like where it gets you extra uses of key abilities you wouldn't otherwise get, it could be. but that nuance is what some people crave) either way, keep up the good work, these videos are the ffxiv content for me in the middle of patches. i only even caught this titanforging discrepancy on my 3rd time listening to this video (i'm also re-listening to your job discussion with 99 vit), so i love these long form discussions. the contrast between you being a 20-year MMO veteran and 99 vit being an MMO baby is fun too

      @@VizerPS I hear you for sure! It's a tough spot. It's fascinating to see the contrast between a system that was purely random and a system that is purely deterministic because it makes both systems weaknesses more apparent and their strengths more obvious. Getting the perfect drop in WoW was a feeling that I won't ever forget, or getting a super rare mount drop after hunting a rare for months and months, but at the same time, getting nothing good for myself week over week was so soul crushing that I quit the game after BfA, really. I've played off and on since then, but not seriously. However, clearing fights and doing the dance in XIV is a feeling I never got in WoW, but at the end I'm almost more relieved than excited to see what I get as a reward. It's not a content issue, really, but a reward issue. I think if there was more "chase" in XIV then clearing content would feel more meaningful and purposeful. Introducing things like Notorious Monster rare spawns from XI that have a potential to drop rewards, more open world content with meaningful rewards to work towards that have a chance to drop and end the deterministic grind sooner, and additional incentives in existing content I think would be a super good format for XIV to go after. I'm not sure how to express it exactly, but I can picture it in my head. Maybe I'll release a video where I try to clarify some ideas I've got kicking around in the noodle.     viper, is the highest apm job rn if memory serves me? so it feeling slow is kind of odd. but you are correct in that it's kind of just active throughout. since uncoiled fury and the vicewinder trio are used often enough and that's 3 double weaves every 40s within the rotation. and the burst window is like machinist burst but sks also lowers it's gcd to be even lower. It's in a simlar place with ninja where it seems like uncoiled are pretty free and usable anywhere. in a sense that's true and in a sense it isn't. you can't use too few of them or your gauge can end up in odd spots around even burst windows. It's less restrictive than ninja since it's a 40s window or so to use them vs ninja having a 20s window. and being a 3s gcd helps. oddly enough I find viper to be harder to push higher damage than ninja. since just like ninja you need to play 20-40s ahead of your burst window. so that vicewinders and uncoiled don't get wasted/over capped or that your resource gauge aligns properly going into burst windows (especially at the 6-8m mark). and it's standard rotation is far more involved. where ninja you realistically only need to learn one burst window, and one or two raiton/suiton placements for disengages and that's it. the actual burst is pretty simple, and outside TCJ not very restrictive. and can be done even during short disengages to some extent. The standard rotation of ninja being so . . . literally mindless, goes a pretty long ways for me. where viper is always paying attention and as mentioned more of a flat line of activity. I still probably agree with it being a B though. but for slightly different reasons. It's also the most punished dps for a death imo, far more so than reaper. reaper death - lose your double burst window, maybe even an extra enshroud depending on where you are. and don't always have gluttony up to get that back in alignment. viper death - similar issue with gauge loss. with how it influences burst windows. but you also lose any uncoiled fury you had stacked up for ranged disengage or pot burst (1050 potency in 3s per). and depending on where vice winder is you'll also take 5 gcd's just to get your damage and attack speed buffs back up. think a combined negative effect of death on both reaper and samurai together. that's the cost of a viper death.

    Great top topic, and this is how they get you to stay and it the main reason I stop caring, just don't have time . Time Sink > Mo Money > Not going to change. Look at how they work the retainers and how they do not give you any other options to increase your storage. How many expansions and updates have they had, and they still have not increase storage. Shoot most all of Dawntrail is just reused/reskinned monster types and armor you would think they could of given something back to the fans and customers as increased storage. Shoot if they announced increase in storage the Subs would cream them selves and parade around clapping and hooting. I love FF14 but Its to the point that its get the expansion, clear the mew content until it becomes a job to grind and then unsub. 🤠

    I found this discussion to be interesting thanks for the content. I guess what id want the most would be a simple tome upgrade (even after the .1 patch) and maybe having twines be 3 books instead of 4. I think gearing in this game is too casual friendly and the devs have backed themselves into a corner trying to appease everyone.

    Historically, I've always associated Scouting with having better disengage options than other melee. NIN was always able to shift their damage around a bit to use things from a distance. Love that they've done that with VPR. In prog, before people really went for uptime it absolutely slapped. Now, it falls behind a little bit in return for having a much easier time with uptime. Think that's pretty neat. Just like MCH, it's just a nice job for PF too.

    Not only are there so many jobs, but the jobs themselves are very simple, meaning that it can be very easy to get bored if you aren't an altoholic. There isn't a very high skill gap on any given job, meaning that the incentive to keep practicing the same job on the same fight for countless runs is pretty irrelevant. If Square is going to trivialize or delegitimize job mastery, they need to make it easier to gear alt roles to keep the content fresh.

    The only gear that's interesting in this game is stuff like going to Pagos to get Cassie Earring. I also think the discussion around materia is emblematic of XIV walking away from being an rpg and becoming an action game over the years. Which is not inherently bad, but it has gotten away from what I like about the gameplay that Final Fantasy games tend to have. It's not very surprising to me that the portion of XIV devs that went on to make XVI made it an action game instead of an rpg, meanwhile Remake and Rebirth still have rpg aspects to them like elemental affinity and contextual buffs and debuffs.

    Can someone tell me why the FFXIV community keeps lying about gear? People always keep saying the same 2 things and usually both at the same time, "BiS doesn't matter" and "SE and Yoshi-P need to give us our BiS gear FASTER". These are two mutually exclusive statements about gear in FFXIV. So, either "BiS doesn'tmatter" and it doesn't matter how long it takes to get to BiS OR BiS does matter and "SE and Yoshi-P need to give us our BiS gear FASTER". Which is it?

      Bis only matters if you’re doing ultimate or parsing. It would also be nice to be able to gear more jobs by the time ultimate comes out

    I never done savage content in FF14, but it sounds like they should only drop coffers moving forward. And they should let you do a one time exchange with all armors, weapon and accessory. That way gear earned/won is never wasted. And with gear, have a set effect that's like taking a food buff, give 2%/3%/4% pending on your class (determination, vitality, critical hit, etc..)

    Just wanna say there was some contradictory opinions here. On one hand gearing is to slow they need to speed it up and on the other gear is boring they should add RNG drops that could be way better than the guaranteed stuff, coming from wow it sucked doing a fight for months and never seeing the drop you need and then to add that level of RNG to gearing in this game on top of random tertiary stats idk it sounds like yall want wow circa wod up to BFA. The reason i play this game over wow is that its not wasting my time as bad, i know when ill get bis and then im done not praying to RNGesus to hopefully get the gear i need or my class just sucks. I don't even disagree that the gearing is to slow because it is they should unlock the tier sooner we should be getting alternate ways of getting upgrade mats sooner increase the cap on weekly tomes etc but really the biggest issue the game has is that there isn't enough content nobody would be fixated on gear if there was literally anything else to do in this game besides gear up to do ultimate. Just sounds like yall need a break from the game which is good i played the new expansion wow dropped recently for a month and it just reminded why i play XIV over wow, when i clear content im actually getting something even if that something is the bare minimum like 1 book that to me is better than going in praying the piece of loot i want drops just for it not to drop and making me feel like i wasted hours of my life.

      @Stone_Stronghold Howdy! I just wanted to pop in to say that when I was talking about those weapons dropping with random stats, I was saying that it was a bad system and not something I wanted in the game. I come from WoW also, and I would do anything to not have a system like WoWs gear design in XIV. I think our discussion about things dropping is more of a desire to see a higher diversity in drops, not necessarily drops with random stats. I can't speak for Vit, of course, but I know that for me it would be neat to see a random chance for a weapon to drop with a third materia slot, or have something like the Chaotic Alliance Raid to drop stuff on par with current savage but with different sub stats and materia slot counts or something to that affect. You should still always get books/totems/some kind of reward for clearing content, because waiting for that perfect thing to drop is lame as heck and FFXIV's biggest positive in its gear system is that i know for a fact that I will get something eventually, even if I have to wait for weeks to use books/totems. I just wish that happened faster and that there were more choices on the sources of that gear. Not less rewards, not random rewards, just more varied rewards and more styles of rewards to be given from more varied sources. Cheers!

    bigger ilvl is all you need. the game was made for all people skill levels. the "hard" content is just a longer script with more things to do in boss fights.

    Personally the game feels really time gated. Once you have cleared all of the savage fights in a tier, it is not too hard to finish ALL your reclears for the week in just 1 day, whether that be in Party Finder or Static. Capping on tomestones also really takes a short amount of time. I also feel demotivated to even do an entire tier if there is no Ultimate to come at the end of it. Doing reclears every week just for the gear to not be used for anything also feels worthlesss, unless you're somebody that goes for logs on FF logs, or even (maybe) criterion dungeon.

      Even if you don't do savage, being limited to one tome piece every one (or two weeks with leg/chest) is really bad. Gearing is way too slow in the game. By the time 7.2 drop with the new raid you barely have time to tome gear 2 roles...this is so stupid in a game selling itslef with "you can play anything you want and switch at any time". The lack of horizontal progression, variant dungeon not giving gear, the lack of any long time grind or anything is really making the game a "log 10 minutes a day to do your expert roulette and log off"

    Assuming SE sticks to the 19 week schedule between major patches, they really should be loosening the savage drops by X.5. I get that they're trying to maximize the time per raid, but assuming you wanna gear up more than one job, it's terrible. I gear up one job to BiS and stop because I'm not doing the grind for more than one job.

    I think XIV loot progression is okay at best, not great, not terrible, but only if you play in a static group with loot planning. My group in 10 clears were able to put everyone's main job on BiS, and almost everyone's alts as well. Now if you raid on PF, it's a completely different story. It's very, very bad. They need to change the cost of gear/weapons/twine/shine as soon as possible. Eight books for a weapon, four for a twine, three for a shine, and so on, is just too much. Not to mention how expensive tome chests/legs are. It should be half of that, even less. In a game that incentivizes the player to try various jobs, gearing should be more flexible.

    Im bis on one job. I was asked if i could flex jobs for FRU and i just blankly said no, because im not gearing an alt job in time. The raid tier should be unlocked after the first 8 weeks, nobody fucking cares past that point. I dont even want to log in and play the game outaode of raid nights because there is literally nothing to do.

    Unfortunately I don't see gearing up changing any time soon, if ever. It's been nearly the same since Heavensward savage releases with minor changes here and there, but ultimately how I geared then is the same as now. Don't say you don't like it to the XIV community though, you will be attacked for having an opinion :P

      @JustinK0 ya. But most games with gear I would call good has some gear that's better in different scenarios or have diverse benefits. The closest thing you have to that in this game is using cooldown reducing materia which barely changes the gameplay. It reduces cast time by like .1 seconds and often lowers your damage

    Hypotheticly, if they removed gear entirely (besides the glam) the game doesnt even change. They could on expansion release put every max level char to ilvl 700 (just as an example number) and tune every raid around that. Savage is clearable week 1 with crafted gear anyway and ultimates are designed around a certain ilvl. So that means the entire gear progression is completly cosmetic unless your group cant deal with week 1 damage checks. That means the whole game's "gear progression" is nothing more than an 8 week player retention mechanic.... gear feels like the replacement of nerf waves to bosses that WoW does instead of an actual progression system.

    Gearing sucks especially when you have so many jobs on 1 character and you need 8 books for 1 weapon (tho x.55 relic is a god send) but they need to put some bis gear in Criterion normal and now in this Chaotic Alliance, it takes too long to gear 1 role/job especially in an raid cycle with an Ultimate, coz your like ok in Bis in warrior but damn this group has 1 oh i don't have the weapon yet for Gunbreaker or just i wanna try that job coz it does more damage. Then materia needs adjusting where you have materia loadouts similar to glamour loadouts

    It's such a daunting task to gear up in this game it makes me not even want to play. And that's a problem. Even if they cut the requirements in half, it would still be challenging.

    They should just change that every person can only get one loot per fight per week, it sucks doing a fight on pf and one person gets 3 coffers. I've been lucky with loot and have got 2 thing in m1s and m2s, and that feels unfair. One person can get really lucky and get everything

      The game doesn't need more arbitrary restrictions to loot. Someone getting lucky with gear isn't a problem because that's just the nature of how rolling for things works. If they restricted how much loot a player can get, it would severely screw over players in statics and anyone who is trying to gear more than one job in a reasonable amount of time. Restricting everyone to one piece of loot would also mean that coffers would start hitting the floor too which is a waste of gear.

      They literally do loot like this in Japan, but it's an honor system. They should just implement it officially as an option in PF. You can still have roll, and Lootmaster, but Honor Roll would be an interesting one.

    Scholar is my fav healer, mainly because i glamour the fairy to be carbuncle, and carbuncle is adorable lol. Also expediant makes some mechanics just so much easier. Astro is my second favorite. I liked old astro too, but i think new astro is a good compromise. The new defensive cards i just throw on the tank to help with autos. Meanwhile, on whm you have to use ur benison and tetras for tank autos lol. I still like whm though for just pumping heals in prog. Thin air is also really nice for recovery or raises.

    honestly they should make it so once you clear the raid tier your current tome gear cap doubles till the next savage tier having to wait 2 weeks to get a tome piece that you still have to upgrade feels bad

    I was foolishly brave and set myself the goal of acquiring full BiS on all jobs during Anabaseios as part of my DT prep. If the relic wasn't BiS that would not have been possible, but I also included 90 BiS for viper and pictomancer. It was only worth it in the end on one job, and that was Dark Knight, because of what they did with the DT dungeons, and it might make a difference on doing the FATEs for xp as a dps if you are soloing the FATEs. Definitely not something I'm doing again for the next expansion launch unless they drastically improve gearing past your main job. It took me around 15 clears of p9s a minimum of 60 clears of p10s around 20 clears of p11s And fortunately just 10 clears of p12s. I only won a total of 7 coffers, 2 from p9s, 4 from p11s and 1 from p12s. Not a single coffer won from p10s. 60+ clears of a single raid to fully gear all jobs with rng protection being the only way of getting gear is ridiculous. And that includes the alliance raid coins which I farmed weekly for the extra juice, but that didn't drop until like week 30, which is too long to go without adding extra rng protection. Square Enix clearly thinks the raid tiers last way longer than they actually do. The gearing system does not fit their "able to play all jobs on a single character" approach to character flexibility at all. And it's completely fixable. 100% on unlocking the raid tier BEFORE the ultimate needing to happen. The raid tier is dead by week 16, and realistically it starts dying week 8 for those that are fortunate with rng. I think the books and augment juice should be there as guaranteed extra and that there should just be a coffer for each player in the party for the first 3 fights, and that the 4th fight should be increased to 2 coffers and 2 random weapons, and that the random weapon is incapable of being for a job that wasn't used for the clear. So say your party doesn't have a whm in the party, then it shouldn't be possible to see a random whm cane. This would improve the gearing without reducing the book costs and it would be far more fair and rewarding for the amount of effort and time investment it sometimes takes. *cough* p10s *cough* You should be able to gear 2 jobs in 2 months and then be able to focus on other stuff. The fight difficulty also comes into play. Savage used to be midcore content, and the gold standard for what that looks like is Stormblood savage raids. They started upping the difficulty tier after tier with Shadowbringers, and they surpassed ultimate phases with p8s and p10s. Why even have ultimates and say it's for the "hardcore gamers" if they are going to do that with savage? No, I hope they don't up the difficulty next raid tier, because I will probably completely stop doing savage if they do. If the hardcore players are bored, they can take what the devs love to say to heart and "go play other games" while waiting for the ultimate. This raid tier is very close to going back to that standard that the Stormblood savage raids created. I think there are some things in m2s and m4s that keep it from fully being midcore, but it's definitely far better than any from the last 2 expansions. My static is also close to clearing m4s. I would love to have time for other things, but I can't when it takes 3-5 weeks just to prog one of the fights with a decent static. The difficulty needs to come back down to Stormblood for savage raids and stay there. The only players it would piss off is the super elites that are always complaining about the game being boring no matter what the devs do. 100% on the tome cap being way too small. I could maybe understand the first 3-4 weeks being 450/week, but after that, it's just obnoxious in terms of the gatekeeping of gear. I would actually love to see them copy WoW's loot system for raid, or at least the iteration of it that existed during Mists of Pandaria. I haven't played since then so I can't say whether it's still like that. Having a 60% chance for a gear piece, 40% chance for gold and 0% chance of nothing, with a stackable currency item that allowed you a choice to spend one for a reroll once per raid boss or just accept what you got, and it being player-locked (each player got this same roll upon killing the boss). This was such a goated system and one of the main highlights of MoP. Each raid had enough bosses that you were pretty much guaranteed 2-3 upgrades for your gear, and so each week felt like you were progressing your character. The thunderforging was really only for the most elite of players, and I have to agree that part of it was bad, but the normal raid loot was awesome, and the normal raids were the midcore content, which is what savage is supposed to be imo. I think the most hated thing about WoW's loot system back then was the chance for mount drops, which is probably still abysmally low. I love the melding materia to the job stone idea. That would be so good. And yes to gear sets. The complaints about dark knight are warranted because dark knight has been in this state where both NA and EU have a healer vendetta against dark knight mains among the hypercasuals who expect it to always be a hard carry from the tank in dungeons and that's not what they get if the tank is a dark knight, regardless of the level of content. It's a very staggering problem that dark knight is still exempt from the able to solo dungeons club when dungeons are not what the jobs are designed around and dungeons are designed to be carryable as the other 3 tanks. Dark knight needs to be able to at least not instantly die the moment the healer drops the ball. They should be able to live 25-30s on their own during a wall to wall pull, which is just not possible in it's current iteration, and it's worse for dark knight the lower you get synced down in level due to having even fewer tank cooldowns. Square Enix has got to address this eventually because they've already started losing subs over the current direction they've continued going with dark knight in Dawntrail. I know several players that dropped their sub upon reading the 7.0 patch notes and finding out that Shadowed Vigil is only available in DT content because they were hoping for some self sustain between levels 40 and 90 where it's desperately needed on the job. How do we fix that? Dark Mind getting the Addle treatment TBN being untied from damage and upgraded to the equivalent of just Holy Shelltron in terms of it's value. Oblation also applying a regen on top of the 10% mit so that it's not just a worse Reprisal.
