Raynor Reads Stuff (Debs)
United Kingdom
Приєднався 21 лип 2021
Hi, my name is Debs and I’m just an aging book lover sitting in a shed talking books 📚
I’m a former journalist who took voluntary redundancy in late 2021 who has yet to figure out what to do with her life (apart from read).
I will read pretty much anything (but I’ll only read Category Romance during GarbAugust).
My preferred genres are literary fiction, classics, crime and thrillers -especially Scandi Noir - westerns, horror, translated literature, sci fi and children’s books.
For non-fiction I enjoy history, travelogues, politics and economics amongst others.
I plan to post two to three times a week… and sometimes that actually happens 😁.
Expect some randomness.

Hello Raynor. How are you? I just wanted to let you know that I have tagged you for the Shelf Respect tab. Of course, it’s completely voluntary so please, don’t feel obligated. Love you videos and your red glasses. 😊
Sarah J Maas is a strange problem. One wants to support her, because there's no sane reason she should be banned. On the other hand I have no interest in reading her.
Thank you for doing our tag Debs! I have Istanbul by Orhan Pamuk on my shelf and hope to get to it next year!
My plans for the rest of this year are proving to not be going to plan, so I think that means I don't have a plan now. I'm also thinking about 2025, but am thinking that I am possibly trying to take on more than I can possibly achieve and really need to set something achievable!
I like how eclectic your tastes are! Recently watched a very strange remake of Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad, starring John Hurt.
I enjoyed hearing your answers. I am doing more mood reading than project reading this month, which is a nice break.
You have such wonderful plans! I hope you have a terrific time with your reading in 2025. I have made a list of books I want to get to and I think I will just continue with books I own and books I didn’t finish this year. Going to keep it simple events-wise, probably do Historathon, March of the Mammoths, the Irish Readathon, June on the Range and Victober again. That’s probably it. But who knows, I always get excited to participate. 😜 Happy reading for the rest of the year!
I worked out that I've read about 800 words towards the read what I own challenge, I know I'm not going to get to 25,000 but as long as I aim for it!
Good luck with your end of the year reading, I read Stowaway to Mars back when I was a teenager, I can't remember it now, unlike sme of Wyndham's other books like The Day of the Triffids, The Midwich Cuckoos and The Chrysalids. I need to get a Book Journal for 2025, I have no plans for January yet, but I expect my over ambitious December TBR will spill over into January.
Fab to be busy. Loving all the tags. For a moment, I thought you were going to tell us your top books of the year...Another video? What I love most about cracking open a new book, could this be "the one", a 5 star, a new favourite?
Ha! Until I saw your responses to this tag, I thought I was perhaps the only person in the world who had read Sweet Bean Paste. I LOVED that book! If you like the Nordic Noir ambience that is found in Jo Nesbo's books, you might enjoy the Department Q series by Jussi Adler- Olsen. Hope your Holiday reading continues to bring you joy.
Those were some great choices for that tag. I’m going to have to have a bit of a think before I do mine. Thanks for tagging me.
Talking about The Great Gatsby, I had a friend who established a tradition of reading it on the firrst day of summer, sitting on the porch and sipping a gin and tonic.
This is such a great tag 🎄. I loved hearing your answers. 👏🏽
Great choices for this tag! This was fun, Debs!
Thanks for the tag! This has some great prompts, I'm miles behind on tags but I should do a Christmas one really. Sweet Bean Paste sounds nice.
@@AaronReadABook oh me too. I am so far behind on the tag videos but I’m starting with the seasonal ones. Sweet Bean Paste is fabulous 😊
Yay! I love that you did our tag! I love books where the weather or the environment plays a role! So fun!
I loved the premise of The Snowman, but I absolutely hated the book. Glad you enjoyed it. Great tag, I love this theme.
@@helenclare3250 thanks, it was a really great tag. I do enjoy a bit of Scandinavian Noir. 😊
@@helenclare3250 Thanks. This was a great tag. I do enjoy a bit of Scandinavian Noir 😊
Great wrap-up, Debs! 😊 Very happy you enjoyed _Slaughterhouse 5_ -- it really does pack a punch, doesn't it! I've got some more Vonnegut on my reading list for next year, _Cat's Cradle_ next - will be one of my 25 banned books for 2025. I really need to grab my Dad some Claudia Pineiro - he loves trying the work of crime writers from around the world, and I'm pretty sure he's never come across Pineiro's work before. That'll make a good Christmas pressie for him! 😀
I saw Dominic West as Iago, in Sheffield, he was brilliant: a charming psychopath, chilling, cathartic in that I knew what he was doing and felt I should have stopped him, I got very emotionally involved!
@@clarepotter7584 oh how fabulous, I really like Dominic West. I can see he would make a brilliant Iago 😁
Great job with these prompts, Debs! Such a fun tag! I agree that Iago is the best villain!
I’m at the end of The Vicar of Bullhampton by Trollope and Mementa Moro by Muriel Spark and then onto Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club. Trying to catch up with Osman. I’m way behind. Looking forward to more of your videos.
I am loving our reading group. I'm glad we still have many left to go! And such a lovely gift from Pat.
I have loved reading Piñeiro with you and the others in our group!
Oh me too. It’s such a lovely and vibrant group of people 😊
Can I put a couple of poetry collections on your radar? You by Rosa Alcalá (Latin American poet) and Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head by Warsan Shire (Somali British poet). These have similar themes to what we've been discussing in the Piñeiro group. They are not beautiful, flowery poetry collections. They are raw and brutal but oh so powerful.
Oh thank you so much Arianne. I’m always on the lookout for new recommendations. Thank you 😊
Lovely haircut Debs 🥰
Thank you so much. In fact it was less of a haircut and more of me taking a pair of scissors to my head 😂. I find myself allergic to hairdressers mostly 😊
@RaynorReadsStuff You did a marvellous job. 💖
Vonnegut has some great books, I particually like Mother Night (which has a brilliant adaptation too) and Sirens of Titan.
I shall definitely read some more. Thanks for the recommendations Aaron 😊
You’ve been busy this week Debs. I’ve never read Slaughter House 5, but I think I’ll get myself a copy after watching what you had to say. Thank you, look forward to your upcoming tagathon 😉
Thanks Alan 😊. I really thought it was great. I’m looking forward to reading along as you read the next section of A Christmas Carol 😊
Lovely presents from Pat. The storm has been wild and we weren't in the badly affected area. Great work on RWYO. I'm doing well, too. It's not easy.
Good work 😊. No we weren’t badly affected by the storm in comparison to come poor people but it’s been very windy, rainy and generally grim. Glad you weren’t hit too hard 😊
🌬 storm emoji apparently
😂
Such an incredible week, Debs! So many events! Loved hearing your thoughts about the Sarah J. Maas books and about our Pineiro group. I am loving our discussion too! And the ghost stories!! Such fun. Thank you for the lovely shout-out. I hope you enjoy the poetry! 🥰🎅🏻❤️🤶🏻🎄
Thank you so much for the lovely gifts Pat, so thoughtful of you ❤. So many things going on this month and they’re all so fun. Our Pineiro group is so fab 😊
I really love Historathon. This is my first year of doing it and I have really enjoyed it. You have inspired me to do a Historathon wrap up in addition to all my other wrap ups!
Please! can u read Quran?.
U are lovely subscribed 🩵
@@blane1814 how sweet, thank you 😊
I really loved the Chekhov event. I loved both plays and the 3 stories. I had never read him before and I am so glad I decided to participate. I didn't know there were other stories connected to Gooseberries. I will get to those. I got the Gaskell book but I have not read it yet. I am also attempting the Against The Day reading event. The Dreamers book sounds so interesting. I always find so many great books to put on my TBR when I watch your videos. Thank you.
Thank you very much. I really enjoyed Chekhovember, I hadn’t read any short stories before. I really like that Gaskell story and Dreamers was just so interesting. Thanks so much for watching😊
just found your channel, and I love it! so many good book recomendations thank you deb!!!
Thank you so much. I’m really glad you are here and thanks for watching and commenting 😊
Awww I love this so much! ❤🥰😍
If you have any interest in seeing the classic Russian film of The Lady with the Dog, you can find it on UA-cam by typing in the title and english subtitles. It's a black and white film from 1960, made as part of the centenary of Chekhov's birth. It is excellent.
Oooh. I’m going to do that tonight 😊. Thanks 🙏
Still got to get around to Mr. Chekhov.
I’ve decided I really like his work 😊
Those suffragette pieces sound fun.
They are sarcastic and hilarious 😂
Rudyard Kipling seems like such an interesting person. I've read through Just So Stories a couple times with my kids and just love them. Great reading week for you! I've been on the Baskervilles for almost a week now --- no joke! With Thanksgiving and my kids here most the week, I've barely had time to read a couple pages here and there. Finishing that tonight and hopefully The Old Nurse's Story, as well!
I really like The Hound of the Baskervilles. Hope you enjoy The Old Nurse’s Story. I haven’t read the Just So Stories but it’s on my shelf for future reading 😊
Always happy to send folks down a rabbit hole! 🤣 Glad you enjoyed _Are Women People_ - great little read! I really need to get to some Mary Oliver, especially if there's a lot of nature poetry in her work. In fact I'll stick that volume on my Christmas list 👍Great wrap up, Debs! 😊
Thanks Alex. I think you’d like Mary Oliver. Are Women People was hilarious. Absolutely loved it 😊
Looking forward to The Old Nurse’s Story. Good approach to counting for the Read What You Own challenge, and nice progress!
Thanks Olive 😊 Hope you like the ghost story. Say hi to Dave for me 😂
Great weekly wrap-up, Debs. You absolutely can count a couple of short books! I am in awe of how quickly you are making your way through the read-what-you-own challenge. I'm so glad to hear how much you enjoyed Mary Oliver. She's definitely a poet you can dip in and out of. She was an incredibly prolific poet in her lifetime.
I absolutely loved the Mary Oliver poetry. I really must read some more soon. I’m pretty pleased with my progress on the RWYO challenge although I do have some really long books coming up. Thanks Pat 😊
@@RaynorReadsStuff well, you can always balance the really long books with some shorter poetry collections. They count too!
I didn't know how varied the jungle books were before I read them either, I loved them too and need to read more Kipling. Never read Chekhov, must amend that soon.
I loved The Jungle Books and really enjoyed the Chekhov Short Stories. I honestly thought The Jungle Books were just going to be the story immortalised by Disney. So many books make me realise how little I know 😂
You are even worse than me for getting caught up in group and shared reads. Tremendous fun though.
Chekhov is one of my favorite writers. One of my favorite stories of his is Misery or sometimes called Grief as you say depending on the translation. Finished All Yours a couple of days ago but don’t know when I’ll get to Time of the Flys.
I’m going to track down Misery/Grief. How did you find All Yours? I’ve finished Time of the Flies now and loved it 😊
Hi Debs, lovely chatty video. 🫶🏽
Thank you so much 😊
I started The Old Nurse's Story but had to put it down as I got busy. It's great so far, the tension is building. I will check out Mark's reading afterwards. I always look forward to your reading wrap up.
Thanks ❤. Mark’s reading is fun. Yes, I enjoyed the way the tension built too 😊
Men are too emotional to vote. :) Just downloaded that one onto my ereader.
I hope you enjoy it. I thought it was hilarious 😊
