What's happening at Norton Motorcycles, and how did they do in 2024?
In this video I cover what's happened at Norton Motorcycles this year. Will they move production out of the UK? Do they have new bikes on the way? In the wake of the KTM collapse, how are their financial results looking? I give an update on all this and more, including the support that TVS Motors India are giving them, and how many bikes Norton have sold. I also give a short update on the pensions scam related to the previous owner of Norton, Stuart Garner.

Norton 961 Commando & Dominator - owners discuss their bikes
Pronounce contributed correctly. You are English and you are speaking this American abortion of the language. Shame on you.
Not many people in India can afford a bike like that. 60% of it's population live below the poverty line.
Buzzing there today. Should be regularly chic a blo c come the Summer.
You won’t get mass sale at those prices
Simply shift the manufacturering to india specialy 600ccs bikes
Norton is going to struggle in the UK...even with TVS support, the market just isn’t there anymore...the blueprint to follow is Triumph who make all their bikes in Thailand and Brasil...TVS will make Norton-badged bikes in India
1:19 When they "brought" the Norton brand ?
Blimey, how many old blokes to move that JPS?!?! I notice all the zips on the red jacket guy's pockets are open. I'm not sure he rides that much as that's a must check unless you want to loose your keys or something. I can't say much though as I can't cope with the god awful british weather and roads so I get out much less these days. I'm a fair weather rider so to speak 😐
I'll keep our BMW RNineT 1200 boxer. a real premium brand and quality. Thank you....
TVS is going the Triumph route. They will diversify manufacturing in India and UK to keep costs down and increase volumes. They don't have much of a choice here....
There's hardly any market for big bikes in India, despite the size of its population, so my guess is they will come out with a range of 400/450cc singles built in India or a badge engineered TVS Apache 310 or Agonda 225... 🤔
Another product no one wants besides a miniscule faithful.
Dukes are made in Thailand and sell very well here in Japan.
Being an old man as I am I learned on a 250cc Norton Jubilee which was by a way a load of rubbish, in those days you could ride a 250cc bike on L plates, however I passed my test on it which basically involved riding around the block without falling off and not hitting the examiner when he stepped into the road for the emergency stop. I really wanted a new 750 Commando but did not have the cash and my father would not be guarantor for HP so I settled for an ex Police BSA A10 which lasted me through university after which I did get my 750Commando but not a new one. At the time (early 70s) both Nortons and Triumph were overpriced compared to the Honda CB750 especially compared to what you got, I didn’t want “Jap crap” even if they did give a free new helmet which our local dealer offered. The Commando and T140 were substantially more expensive than the Honda, I have had a few Nortons and Triumphs aswell as a lot of Japanese bikes over the years eventually in my late 50’s settling for a 900 triple Triumph Daytona which I still own although my son uses more than me. The thing is this is only a Triumph in name, I had a 500cc Triumph Daytona over 40 years ago and there is no comparison. Triumph like Norton went bust and regardless of how many relaunches or rebrands it is ridiculous to associate these new companies with the heritage these names carry. When a company goes bankrupt the name should be barred from use in my opinion. The British motorcycle industry died in the 70s through incompetence and greed and nothing changes. As an engineer all my working life I wanted to produce the best solution always at a price and virtually every time even though I would be within budget I would be told to make it “cheaper”. Motorcycles are sadly no more than a “unit” produced at a price with a projected profit margin. The name is just a name often giving a false impression of quality or worth.
If Norton wants to be a premium model only company it will fail, that’s a given, who can afford 20k for a bike unless you sign your life away or use rent it ride it!!! If they stay in the UK they will also fail, the price is to high to manufacture in the UK, it’s nice to know nortons are made in the UK but what does it matter these days, to survive they need to produce a range and size of bikes to be successful and to attract younger riders. I want Norton to survive but take a leaf out of triumphs book and follow suit, it’s the only way to survive.
I have been to the Norton showroom in Revolutions UK, Perth. Nice display but too expensive for my budget. Revolutions UK are also the new Royal Enfield Dealership north of the Forth Road Bridge, after a disastrous years for Scottish motorcycle dealerships.
When the 961 was originally announced, I was quite excited by the thought of owning one, despite the "exclusive" price tag. What put me off was learning of the very short-stroke engine, which, you may disagree, would remove it seemed much of the "character" of the old 89mm, the same stroke as it turned as my old MGB in the 1970s and '80s.
BIkes in general (even moderate-sized) have become prohibitively expensive, the Norton range in particular, I'm afraid to say as a former owner of a '72 Commando in the 1990s. I could afford a 961 for example, lucky old me, but it would be a huge "indulgence" that could not be rationally justified. Extremely sad.
AKA the same old BS, scam, loss making, empty promises etc etc etc etc etc corporate crap that has been going on since before the demise of AMC in the 60's.
I couldn't stay far enough away. Good luck to the brave owners.
At the moment, the business of motorcycles, is a fairly tough nut to crack. Young folks seem to be simply uninterested. It might be different in Asia, but I know here (N. America) they all "like" your bike, seem blown away a 70+ year old poop has one as a daily driver, but they remain uninterested in ownership.
Doesn’t there need to be a profitable operating business before you hire an expensive profit siphon in the form of a CEO? ‘Back in the day’ every engineering works apprentice in my West of Scotland hometown rode a Norton (if they didn’t drive a Cortina) - most were cafe-racers, and their owner-modifiers actually hung out at cafes. Not many working class 17-22 year olds with that kind of money to splash out on a machine you probably won’t be able to find spares for in the next five years, and no more apprenticeships for lunch break machining. Oh well.
Yep.. another Brexit win 😂 my god I’m soooo tired of all our winning …. Let’s keep winning lads…. In Boris we trust. Or was it Cummings… oh maybe truss noooo it’s definitely corbyn or was it starmer … anyway sunlit uplands here weeeee come
Tired old theme. Absolutely nothing to do with Brexit. So just another Corbyn type bore...? If you read the figures on motorcycle sales all over the world, the large capacity models are slumping. 400s etc doing well. Triumph seem to be weathering the storm well. With production in UK, Thailand and India. Still a UK owned business, and of course popular in EU countries. So sort of makes your Brexit comment a bit lame.
How can they sell a replica of a bike they never built in the first place ? Rotary bikes were built by NRE and Norton Motors not Norton Motorcycles !!!
Norton need to increase the power output and go water cooled. At the moment they are overpriced and underpowered, not worth the asking price.
I saw a v4cr up at £42000 recently.......i was not tempted!
I presume the high reported losses are a result of investment in the new factory, and more so the development of the new models. I hate to think of the cost to develop a motorcycle model from scratch these days.
Solid content but it has a gap as the insolvency and the treatment of creditors has been escalated to the Parliament & Health Service Ombudsman. They are going to investigate potential maladministration by DVSA and Insolvency Service. Happy to share material and the basis James Cleverly MP agreed to submit the complaint to the PHSO on behalf of NUML creditors
So an over priced unreliable bike is moving to now becoming an over priced & unreliable bike. Love innovation
The new Hesketh...
To many emission restrictions in the uk and all so its being made harder to purchase/own a motorcycle here just look at India just get on and move on
Overpriced, disappointing over-stated. 😒😒😒
Norton as a name has suffered far too many reincarnations and false starts. They'll have to copy 'RE and Mahindra's BSA to be successful. The pursuit of "premium" buyers is a mirage, that's been the approach of all of the previous owners. There are few of these people around. Making overly complicated expensive bikes without a solid time proven reputation is to put it kindly, tricky. Most buyers don't want to pay out for a bike that is suddenly unsupported and they are left high and dry.
Reported the Government are planning to bring forward ZEM to 2030 5 years left for newpetrol bikes
@0:23 The 'pensions scandal' did not ''Contribute to the collapse"! It's public awareness merely accelerated the inevitable. Garners way, yet again, of mitigating the 'management' of funds into his own investments. A means of buying time while he planned his exit strategy.
Sure seems that way - the proverbial rat leaving the sinking ship !
One word... HONDA
Honda Announced the cub will cease production next year, also the Triumph dealership has closed down near me in Japan.
Issue with the current iteration of the bike is that theyre too expensive and niche for what theyre selling. Move the main factory to somewhere cheaper and do small final touches in the UK factory and lower the prices of the bikes to sub 10k and you'll have a solid seller. Also another issue is no sales in the US.
Young people, as far as I can see, don't seem to have as much enthusiasm for motorcycles as us more mature people. Far too much BS to obtain a full licence these days. I would imagine that the Norton bikes are only bought by older riders that can afford the high prices. Also, the riding position on some of the models wouldn't be very comfortable for us geriatrics. I would still love to own one though!
I can’t believe the hoops people have to jump through to get into biking! My son took his test when he was 19, got an A2 licence. If he now wants to ride a bigger bike, he has to retake his test. Unbelievable! I have ridden my 961 all across Europe. I’m 55, it wasn’t the most comfortable riding position for sure, but I made it and I had an absolute blast. If you get the opportunity, I highly recommend taking one for a test ride. Can’t wait to see what these 6 new bikes are like! Thanks for your comments. Cheers.
This is a great review. Thank you. I can not for the life of me work out why TVS are persevering with this brand. They are basically trying to take over the world with two motorcycles. It doesn't make any sense economically or on terms of logistics
I'm the sort of guy that always loved the old Norton's, has money in the bank to purchase new (and actually needs one), but I'll never, ever buy one...not only did Norton let North Americans down, but they made us angry...and now, they're going to cheapen their product as well. Just go away already. The carrot on the stick has rotted and fallen off. Look at what a completely dead company, Indian, has done in the last 10 years...and then look at Norton. Well, I guess Norton mirrors the shape your entire country is in...
Right, Anders. The decline started, IMHO, with the introduction of the Commando, which was a splendid ride, but also a cover-up. The Commando's motor was the same old parallel twin. Underneath the isolastic suspension that 1930s design was still trying to shake itself to pieces. With the advent of the Commando Norton kept the wrong motor and dropped the right frame--the unmatched featherbed.
Good to hear that Deposit holders and those who lost their Pension savings were taken care of. Steven Garner should be in Prison.
Hi Mike, I completely agree. Thanks for your comments. Cheers. Jonathan.
@@NortonUnofficial When I was 15 years old I worked in an Independent motorcycle Shop that Specialized in British Bikes. BSQ, Norton & Triumph. The Owner had a BSA Pro Hillclimber. I am 63 now .
I live in the states and have been riding since the age of 9. I own a few older two strokes Yamaha and Suzuki’s street bikes from the 70’s. My around town short trip bike is an Indian made LML 150cc 2 stroke scooter 2005. Great scooter with a reed valve engine. The Indians understand how to make a quality product with styling at a price point, that won’t break your wallet. KTM is bankrupt because they focused on premium product over a price point product that would compete with Honda,Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki. Who dominate the market globally. They are the template by which to run a product range and pricing and the Balance sheet of a successful company. Royal Enfield is doing it successfully and they make a great bike for the money.
Send production to India and price them the same as Enfield and they might have a chance 😂
Great, yet more job losses in the UK. India has a protectionist economy. They're picking the brains of the the west. Like Enfield. Miniscule numbers employed here while mass manufacturing in India. Ditto Triumph which has the gaul to have Union Jacks all over its products, while mass manufacturing offshore helping those economies. While the UK has become a low paid low skilled welfare dependent economy for many.
As soon as I saw the new Commando with carbon fibre mudguards and 1980s Suzuki indicators I knew they were going down the wrong road. It came 15 years too late in my opinion. There was a time when those with more money than sense were in abundance but those days are gone.
How could anyone who apparently knows what they are doing let a premium product leave the factory with those indicators. Has anyone said that they like them, no. And, they are still being sold with the same ones. Crazy
I owned several commando's they were junk .Still junk it seems.
I've had over 70 bikes, the mk3 commando I had was one of the worst.
I don't believe they deserve success. Sorry, but the combination of retro ignorance and dreadful engineering has annoyed for too long.
I'd like a Norton but the price prohibits a purchase for what is by modern standards a relatively modest performance spec.
I kinda look at it like this: When I get on a Norton I don't have to worry about silly things like "riding modes" because I am the riding mode.
Over priced in a dying market with a manufacturer that could fold and leave you with an ornament 😬
Yeah I can see a collapse coming in a year or so.
Of course TVS will produce the majority of all Norton motorcycles in India. They would be daft not to. They might maintain a design office in the UK and possibly some do assembly work on top-of-the-range models, but there is no way they can be profitable obeying UK rules and paying UK wages and taxes. In any case, if they stay in the UK they will be obliged to make a percentage of electric bikes and then phase-out all the internal combustion engine machines within ten years. They currently sell about three million scooters and small motorcycles per year across Asia and i suspect they are reasoning that a lot of those existing customers might be persuaded to move up to something larger, with the world famous ‘Norton’ name on it. This isn’t about the UK the focus is much further to the East.
I grew up around Norton motorcycles, their biggest mistake was in the 70’s they continued to make motorcycles who’s engines were designed in the 30’s and 40’s and didn’t make any smaller capacity bikes that would appeal to younger riders as well as those more experienced as did the Japanese companies. Norton FAILED to produce a large capacity multi cylinder motorcycle that would compete with the Honda CB750 that also had electric start and ran with little to no viberation. The BSA Triumph group managed to carry on after Norton had folded but by the mid 80’s to the early 90’s it had gone completely until John Bloor took it over and stationed it at Hinckley but the BSA Triumph group was guilty of exactly the same things as Norton and the AMC ( Associated motorcycles ) Group as really was the whole British Motorcycle Industry. Norton in my honest opinion made some serious errors of Judgment by not developing a multi cylinder modern engine , instead choosing to mess around with Wankel rotary engines which they wedged into a Yamaha FZR750 Chassis, for true Norton enthusiasts, Norton didn’t exactly cover itself in glory in that instance because those bikes weren’t Nortons in any way shape or form, and this brings us to the rotary engined Norton Commander - too bloody expensive ! And that carried on right up to present day because Norton haven’t made a motorcycle that a working class person could afford since the early to mid 70’s , even that 961 commando was too expensive for what it was, and it’s speed and power was only comparable with that of a Yamaha TDM 850 ! My brother had a brand new Norton Commando ( before that he had an Atlas ) and my uncle had a brand new Honda CB750 and when they stood them side by side the Honda was the better bike, even when the Triumph Trident is compared against the Honda CB750, the CB750 still comes out on top because the Trident as with the rest of the British Motorcycle Industry of that time was too little - too late. And from what you say here The Norton Motorcycle company have absolutely no intention of manufacturing a motorcycle that the general public can afford…….I’d love to ride a Norton, but it looks like I’ll be sticking with YAMAHA !
Thank you for taking the time to comment on the video. Interesting perspective. Hope you are enjoying the content. Thanks!
You miss the point totally. Norton has always been a premium brand. While a side by side comparison with a Jap bike might leave you thinking the Jap bike was somehow superior, the reality was very different. My friends all had big Jap bikes and I had no trouble outperforming them on the road. Maybe, if I got the idea in my head for a new guitar, or piano, I would have no trouble owning a Yamaha.
Triumph. That's what I ride. A 2021 Bobber with 20K AUD custom work done. Best bike I've ridden and the quality of the modern Triumph is second to none.
@@SavedbybGrace Any Thailand Triumphs I have seen here have fit and finish problems. The welds look like they were done by a high school welding class and the panels were wonky. Maybe you got a good one, but I wasn't offered a good one when I was looking. I have it in my mind I'd like to try an iron head Sportster, so I'm keeping my eyes peeled for one of those at the moment.
The brand has a stench about it. Why would anyone wish to associate themselves with the image of a loser? The company will fail, guaranteed.
