If rumors are to be believed TVS is planning for a new range of Norton 500-650 air cooled twins which will be made in India in the TVS plant along side BMW 310 GS range, the name Norton 'Combat' has been registered ,to compete with the Royal Enfield 650s ,BSA gold star and Triumph 400 in the more affordable category.
@PapaSmurfOn2Wheels I really hope the news is true ,I live close to the TVS plant about 30 kms away, and I hope TVS brings out a new mid capacity range soon in the Norton lineup.
I agree, mostly. The '74 Commando had a few engineering problems, could be corrected in about 2 weeks. Make it in India, sell for less than 8K. Wait 2 yrs., add 100 cc, raise the price 1K, rake in the cash. But they did that with the RE so why compete with yourself? OTOH they have the most posh factory ever.
After buying my Dominator SS model, I was hooked on the Nomad or Ranger as a stable companion. I waited and waited but the Garner era came to an end and TVS canned them. The Commando, Ranger and Nomad re-engineered under TVS would have been winners not the overpriced models they have now. Wrong decision.
I agree. They should build this bike. But Norton really has to clean-up the engine. It looks terrible with a black painted engine and a lot of rubber tubes. Why not air-cooled?
Going air cooled I suspect would be extremely difficult if not impossible with today’s emissions requirements. For a volume bike, anyway. Maybe for a niche product like the Commando, but then that would drive the price up.
I'm going to buck the trend here and say that I think TVS made the right decision to cancel the Atlas models. The mid-market is now crowded with models from RE, BSA, new Triumphs, plus some Japanese and Italian twins. Motorcycling in the developed world is in decline as the demographic ages. New young riders are not progressing beyond the 125cc or equivalent learner stage due to the barriers of cost and qualification, so a highly competitive mid-market does not have the huge customer base to satisfy slim margins. There will always be a smaller premium market of buyers who do progress to larger bikes and will desire (and can afford) a luxury, premium-branded machine. That's where BMW, Harley and Norton can benefit.
It's great to see the bike being talked about, but the video has errors. The Nomad is the road version with low front alloy mudguards. The Ranger is the more off road version. Also there were only ever one of each bike made. There are a few pictures of 2 Rangers together. These were press pictures and the factory fitted Ranger high rise mudguards to the Nomad. I made some serious enquiries to try and obtain the Nomad or Ranger. I was told they were not part of the deal when New Norton was purchased from SG. So I assume he took the only Nomad and Ranger to exist, just 2 bikes. On another note the engine was sold to be built under licence by Zongshen. The Nomad was 10k the Ranger was the more expensive version. It is good the video has been made but more homework should have been carried out as there are incorrect details.
Thanks for your comment. I like the look of it, but it’s personal preference. I don’t think we’ll ever see it go into production, but maybe there will be a more affordable model one day.
Norton have made a huge mistake as it would be hugely sucessful and sell more than the royal enfield interceptor. They need to ask bikers what they think. There was a huge feeling of excitement over the ranger and atlas and the motor could have been used as a on and off road scrambler, adventure bike, cafe racer or a bare bones roadster. One of the craziest decisions norton ever made to drop this. 😮😢
I would have been ready to buy this bike, I saw a couple of test bikes when I did a factory tour of the old factory. Such a shame they never went into production.
That motor is a very uncomfortable fit in the bike and looks like a bodge job. I wonder whether it was originally intended to go into a completely different vehicle, where it would lie flat. It was designed by Ricardo so maybe Norton weren’t the original intended customer.
ALL you own is the name the real norton died many years ago and why name a bike thats all ready been name is a old name that has no relaltion to the origianal atlas and most parts are made else were in the world so its not british and the new norton are not real nortons I have owned real nortons of well over 53 years and rebuilt some 300
Its the best looking Norton Iv ever seen. I would buy it for its looks alone. The performance is attractive also. It would definitely be a best seller.

Interesting. They did indicate to me that they’re working on more models, that size of bike makes sense.

Ime not a NORTON owner but I wish I was, I really hope they do produce this NORTON ATLAS its a stunning looking bike
Yes I love the look of it. I would have bought it.
I would have bought the Ranger in a heartbeat! Stunning design. Maybe one day they will….. 👍🏻
Me too! Great looking bike in my opinion

I also have a 961 Domi and a Ranger would have gone perfectly next to that. Such a shame it never made it into production.
Both of them models are fantastic and I do believe we'll see them in a showroom in the future, hopefully not too far away. 🤞
I really hope so too. Thanks for your comments. Cheers. Jonathan.

@@NortonUnofficial How can an air-cooled engine be more expensive than a water-cooled engine?
@@TTTzzzz this article explains it quite well www.motorcyclenews.com/news/2015/september/is-this-the-end-of-air-cooling/
@@NortonUnofficial Thanks!
I'm sad they didn't build these. I haven't had a bike for a while and would have got one of these. Great looking machine, just what I was after.
Yes me too. Thanks for your comment.
I agree, these bikes should be made!

I would definitely buy one of these
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Ride safe. Cheers. Jonathan.
The Norton Atlas or the Range have never gone on sale...I have never seen them on sale
Yes that is correct. I was ready to buy one, sadly they never released them
Make an affordable traditional road twin!
That would be awesome wouldn’t it. Thanks for your comment
It was a shame they didn't go on sale...I waited two years to buy one😔😔
Me too!

I may now buy a zongshen
Would like to see Norton produce a more affordable bike but the Atlas looks awful. It’s messy and looks botched.
