How is winter sawing going ? I used to hate frozen logs. Hard on knives, bandsaws snaking and fine dust building up. All this here in BC in softwood mills. I can imagine what it's like in a hardwood mill. Happy sawing and stay safe!
It’s been tough the wetter species and fresher logs sawdust freezes as the log is being cut and pushes on the saw Main mill was cutting poplar it was a nightmare last week the saws were having a tough time cutting Today we started sawing Ash so because most of the ash trees are fairly dry it cut pretty good tomorrow we are going back to poplar. Then next week will be Red Oak and white oak for the next 6-8 weeks it’s nice it warmed up some -5. Is much better than -18 The chipper knives have been getting changed twice a day chunks of frozen sand and mud dull the saws as well as the chipper it’s been a challenge but today was good sawed 177 soft maple logs changed into Ash at end of the day cut another 85 ash so I pretty productive day Thanks for the kind words have a great week
I would like to see what's going on in the back of the mill .
I do like to watch a fine Sawyer work but I would like to see some of the whole operation .
What exactly do u want to see?
Nice stuff
You seem to have a lot of problems with your chipper.....Get rid of the chipper, kiln dry your slabs, and sell your slabs as firewood. Or sell it to any local campgrounds...
No not really. The blades get changed everyday. Sometimes 2 or 3 times. So we stay running while they are being changed .. our kilns are always full of lumber there would be no time to kiln dry slabs. They all eventually get grinded up into chips We have a huge contract sawdust wood chips and bark fines with a very large fertilizer and mulch facility they take 1000s of loads from up every years sometimes up to 12 loads a day. The trailers we have hold up to 140 yards of sawdust or chips To cut up slabs then kiln dry then we would have so much times into them there would be no money to be made would likely lose money on them. Thanks for watching
Ver nice, thanks.
Thank you for sharing! Dan
Thanks Dan. I bent the splitter really bad there took a little while to get it fixed
All part of sawing, or, shit happens!
Awesome Video
That’s also interesting to me how you use one species of wood to clean the saw for the hickory. I wish I had had the opportunity to work in a lumber mill also. You have a great job in my personal opinion!! 🙂 I enjoy your videos!
I enjoy operating the headsaw I would like to eventually learn the big bandsaw but it likely won’t not happen thanks for watching Bill
So I’m a former plywood mill worker from the 80s in NW Oregon. I heard you say that the frozen logs are harder to cut. We don’t usually have really cold winters here, but we had one winter that got down in the -0 Fahrenheit for a solid two weeks and our logs started freezing as soon as they got on the slip from the pond and by the time they got to the lathe they were pretty frozen. When they tried to peel them it came off like shaved ice lol. We had to shut down for two weeks, then it took another week just to get fully running again because everything was completely cold. Crazy winter it was here that year.
Sounds like a crazy winter. We are also having an issue with frozen logs the blower on the Gsngsaw is having a hard time sucking up the sawdust from the plainer it’s just like shaved ice the sawdust the sawdust is coming out on top of the lumber instead of going up the pipe but we are still making the t work
Love it show us more 😍
If you go to playlist double cut bandsaw there’s around 10 videos I think
@TheWildWestMill ok 👍 thanks
@ I will get more video hopefully this week coming up. Thanks for watching
@TheWildWestMill awesome 👌 buddy, can't wait 😀
Cool to see.
We make sawdust like that 9 hours a day. It adds up really fast
Enjoyed the sawing, I liked the cab view. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Glad you Enjoyed the video
It’s really the only way I can show everything at the headsaw Mark Galicic has a camera that he moves back and forth in front of the cab. I just don’t have time to do that. But I wish I could have something like that
How is it going sawing frozen logs.? It used to creep me out.
It’s been a tough week nothing wants to work properly. But the week is over now hopefully it warms up a bit. Creep you out how??
I'm still laughing at that last log, if you can call it a log.🤣
Should of been left in the bush for firewood lol
I love a good challenge, and you did well on your last log! The man says, You gotta take the good with the bad...Thank you for sharing another fine video! Dan
I was going to edit it out because the video ended but I figured I’d leave it in there. Thanks Dan. Couldn’t get any video of the bandsaw today. They ran out of sawblades. None of their saws were cutting good today. The logs were huge and frozen they chsnged 4 saws by lunch time
That is amazing!!!Dan
@@TheWildWestMilland that’s why we have hot ponds in north western Ontario as I was telling you about before. 😉😉😉
@@JohnNaturkach for some strange reason they stopped using a frost notch at the coldest time of the year. But now started putting it in again. I didn’t really understand the decision
what happens to the pile/cart of the 'bad ones'?
So those pcs were 1 7/8 X 3 7/8. They were 108 “ longs. But we have another order for 1 3/4x 3 3/4. 51” long. So they will get plained on 2 sides then get cut in half to get two 51” pcs then bundled up and sold to a different customer
I am amazed at your carriage it dose thing's I haven't seen anything like it. I have been to two worlds fair's and a cock fight and seen nothing like it. Your Sawyer is very, very good( you can. pass that a long if you like) I will to continue to watch.
I am the sawyer. Thanks I appreciate that very much What does the carriage do that u havnt seen before
Its 4am, 01/23/25 and 24*F. High today is supposed to be 45*F. Its cold....lol.
Ya buddy it’s been one hell of a week nothing will work properly when it’s that cold
Finally a sawyer who cuts lumber correct
Ya buddy really try to get the best grade possible everytime
Thank you for sharing! Dan
I noticed that the lumber that was stickered was placed all Willy Nilly. Why not more uniformed? Less chance of warped boards.....
It all air dries. We would make a bigger deal if it was being kiln dried and used for somthing important. But it’s only used to make more sticks and stakes
And it’s been -20 Celsius for the past 3 days minus 30 with the windchill. It’s kinda difficult for the guys to do much of anything when it’s that cold. We are in a building but there’s no heat
Wow! No heat..... Well, at least they're under cover and away from the wind!
@DanielParadis-sr5nh I’m the only one the gets to stay comfortable I sit in the cab in a tshirt and those guys are working in -20 or colder sometimes I forget to give them a little break The building does stop the wind. But some days it’s colder inside the mill because there’s no Sun 🌞
Man that thing flips them logs the best of anyone else's sawmill I've seen.👍👍👍🙏
Thanks buddy Gotta be fast to make money these days most mills just have the log turner. But this mill has cant flippers on the carriage it’s way way faster than turning the log all the way around with the turner
We had -27* Fahrenheit this morning, no wind, in New Gloucester! How did your band saw do with dozen logs? How do you think a Solid Tooth Saw would hold up to frozen logs? Stay warm and safe! Dan
The band saw ran all day I’m going to get a video tomorrow The bandsaw runs a frost notch for frozen logs it’s suppose to help anyways. I don’t know a whole lot about it tho Solid tooth sawmill would probably cut good since he needs to spray water on his saw at all times but I don’t know very much about those saws just what I’ve seen from watching
Good job for doing it in the cold.
Thanks Dan
Beautiful pieces like that would nice did a good job
Thanks buddy
Hello friend!! I just got started watching your videos again, been a busy couple months for me lol. We don’t have hickory over here on the west coast, but I hear it smells amazing when it’s being milled. What’s your opinion? 🙂
Ya buddy hickory dies smell good. It’s by far the hardest species to cut It’s like cutting steel lol
Nice sawing, Marc
Thanks for the reply to type of Poplar trees. Didn't know there was that many different types of trees. Enjoy your videos
Thank you I really appreciate that.
Very nice!
What tree family do the tulip come from?
It’s poplar. When you see helmsburg or nichols saw poplar. It’s all tulip. But here we class cottonwood balm tulip aspen all as poplar
Thank you
some decent looking logs instead of the usual garbage.
Ya with aspen we saw logs up to 28” But I’d rather saw 16” to 20” logs all day can really have a good day with logs like that …. All the good hardwood logs go to the big bandmill But we do have some nice red oak coming up here shortly As a pallet mill we are bottom feeders but we have gotten pretty good at feeding off the bottom lol. Thanks for commenting John
I cleaned the roof of my cab. I think you were the one that made the comment I was getting lazy it shouldn’t be overlooked Fire hazards are a serious thing
@@TheWildWestMill that was me that mentioned the roof of the cab. A clean mill doesn't burning down
@@johnmcgarvie4061 ya man you are right for sure It’s amazing how much sawdust settles up high where you wouldn’t think it would get too We have a plainer mill and the sawdust that comes from there can start on fire just looking at it wrong Because it’s all kiln dried lumber
Gorgeous maple 🍁
There was a couple boards right at the start that were Aspen. But could pass them off as wormy maple
Nice looking lumber!
Ya buddy it’s neat when that bug creates that stain in the lumber
Thank you for sharing! Dan
Thanks Dan
A long time ago the trees we cut for firewood was frozen. When you split it ice crystals flew. It sounded different when the axe hit it also. That was some good times in the woods.
Ya I bet buddy for the past 10 days the poplar has been frozen. Very difficult to cut and super heavy The headsaw sounds different as well when cutting the frozen logs breaks sawbits too
Thank Christ you have the vertical edger to help you saw up those skanky logs.
My Dad told me one time, “ 😉With each delay, it’s one board you will never cut “ just thought I’d pass it on. Have a good day bud. 😊
Thanks John. It’s nice for us even when the headsaw stops. The gangsaw can keep cutting we load bundles of cants for the gangsaw from the cant yard
Mighty heavy slabs your cutting there
The chips are worth more than the lumber
Aspen needs to be Snow White to be worth even mediocre money atleast right now anyways so it’s just cants for now. And Precuts for pallets
You’re losing money using that guy run in the saw
At 47:50 what is that guy doing on the right hand of the screen?
Those cages are sold for firewood so hes just trying the get it nice and full it saves us from having to change it out I guess But its really not a necessary I know I wouldn’t be doing it
4 - 6x5's. Neat work!
The one log I got 4. 6x7.5 Cut a bunch of logs today like that. The footage adds up real fast like that.
You have yourselves quite an operation! Thank you for sharing! Dan
Thanks Dan…. We got a huge order coming up it’s going to get real crazy the next few months It’s for a bunch of different farmers for vegetable bins. Oak or Ash only we need 200 000 bdft of 7/8x6x48”. Then there’s a bunch of other sizes as well. Close to million bdft when it’s all done
Thank you very much!!!
Love watching that saw
Ya buddy it’s pretty awesome
That ain't the green chain, That's the saw head. I should know cuz I spent 3 years working at a damn sawmill with a circular saw head like this one.
This videos says nothing about a green chain
It’s says check out a related video of the green chain. So relax buddy One thing about sawmill guys they don’t read well I should know I’ve worked in a damn sawmill for years lol
What is the company address please?
Sorry man I’m not really interested in posting that on UA-cam for everyone to see
Is that tulip poplar? We saw a ton of that here in Kentucky, mostly for barn lumber and paint grade millwork
Ya buddy here in Ontario we just call it tulip because here we get so much aspen we call it poplar. We class Cottonwood , balm , aspen , tulip , willow all as poplar we also have another one that we call yellow poplar. The bark kinda looks like aspen but the wood is a yellow colour and it’s super heavy and dense I think you guys do the same thing with tulip poplar as we do with white pine I don’t get to saw a lot of tulip it mostly goes to the grade lumber mill
@TheWildWestMill here in Kentucky we actually call it yellow poplar, and I know it's not a true poplar species, it's a distant relative to magnolias. It grows fast, tall, straight, and is surprisingly stable when dried. It's light but fairly strong, and as long as it is kept from ground contact it resists rot better than most. My little farm is covered in it. 30 to 40 inch trees with at least 3 16ft logs in them.
@ our tulip grows like that here too. But our aspen does as well. We use it for trim and mouldings because the nice logs are Snow White right down to the heart and sometime the heart is so small can’t even tell it’s there So boards 7ft and longer 1 common and better we cut for trim. 7ft because doors are 7ft tall
Next time I get a log that we call yellow poplar I will make a video but it’s likely nothing you have ever seen before. We don’t get very much. But cottonwood and aspen. We saw millions of bdft a year. Between 5 and 10 million between the 2 mills
You don't seem to have very much snow on the ground. We have a significant snowfall for the first time in 16 years.
We got our first little bit of snow this Saturday morning but 45 minutes north of here got a ton of snow. It has just been unbelievably cold
Does All the lumber from this mill go to pellets? Is Aspen used for anything other than pallets? We have Aspen trees down here, however they are very small.
We pull all the grade lumber of any species we cut we do select and better and we put 15% 1com in those piles Then after it’s kiln dried it’s re graded The 2-3 common goes to pallets The Select aspen all goes to trim and mouldings in houses but 7 feet and longer only because a door is 7 feet Aspen is a high end lumber most trim in houses is made out of it We have a kiln dried department and also a flooring plant so really no lumber cut by us is used for pallets. But sometimes with hardwood. We will do 4” lumber and 6” wide lumber that is sold green piled tight for pallets But 90% of the time the lumber is all kiln dried then. Re graded and sold for grade lumber or flooring
Right now tho pretty much all our lumber from this mill 4/4 and 5/4. Is being made into pointed garden stakes for the farmers they are selling like crazy. Any species they make them as short as 24 inches and as long as 72 inches and everything in between so there’s not much waste and I can leave more wane on the lumber than usual But the big bandsaw mill all grades are separated like in a normal mill
