I couldn't remember if I own the Freddie Hubbard Sky Dive album so I googled it. I came across an old Jazz Journal review that practically ripped the album to shreds. However, the song Povo rang a bell with me and I remembered where I knew it from - the album "Spark!" by the group Soulive with Karl Denson on sax. I absolutely love that version so you might want to check it out on youtube.

Freddie Hubbard's 🎺 recordings on CTI (Red Clay, Straight Life, First Light) and 🎺 Donald Byrd's early 70s Blue Note albums (Ethiopian Knights, Kofi, Black Byrd) were being to suppress 🎺Miles' output of the era. With regard to the Laws family, it has been nice discovering Ronnie Laws in one of the early incarnations of Earth Wind and Fire with Maurice White (former drummer of Ramsey Lewis Trio), in addition to his early albums.

Hey Kenny…what a great review of Skydive! I completely agree with your assessment of the percussion instruments on Povo. They let Keith Jarrett loose for only a brief solo towards the end of the composition but for the most part keep him in the pocket as backdrop. I love that tune though and really that whole album. Thank you for reviewing it. Also, it’s been interesting to hear from your perspective the limited sound quality on these CTI recordings. I don’t have a mid fi or hi fi system so have been unsure. I need an upgraded phonograph. I’ll look at some of your recommendations. Diggin your channel. 👍

The Richard Davis album was originally released by MPS in 1970 as "The Muses For Richard Davis" . Pausa released it under the name Jazz Wave in the US a couple of years later, also with a very different album cover

Hi Kenny, thank you again for these great recommendations! I study Jazz History at the University of Amsterdam and your videos really help me discover new music. I wonder if you could do a review of Dexter Gordons' One Flight Up, which is my favorite album of his. Another personal recommendation would be Bird Call by Vi Redd, a really great and underrated album in my opinion. Much Love from Holland!

I think you got all of the scores right on these albums. If I was recommending these albums, it would probably be as a standard of what jazz is, and not so much the totality of how far it can go.👍

i am very intersested by the freddie hubbard you showed. the cast is awesome ! thank you kenny ! i heard the max roach album you showed couple days ago. i enjoyed the performance a lot ! he was a total genius on drums ! the problem is that when i listen to a record and i'ts too technical, i have mixed feelings ! when i listen to music (with instruments or not) i want to be touched emotionally so it was a good album, good listening experience but not great regarding my taste.😅 thank you very much kenny ! peace and love my friend 🙏

Another underrated, and great, early 70's hard bop album is Constellation by Sonny Stitt. Fire.

Since you mentioned CTI, I'd appreciate your thoughts on the smaller jazz labels that seemed to have popped up in the 1960's-70's. CTI of course, but also Flying Dutchman, Black Jazz, etc.

Thank you very much for mentioning that, I appreciate that 😊 ✌️ ...I did a video featuring Doug & Jean Carn on the Black Jazz label in a past video.
