    My magic system is a huge mishmash of different things like folklores, demonology, etc etc. There are some practices that use summoning demons or spirits to help get powers, and there are some that use spells to transform someone into a sort of were-animal, where they can transform into a certain animal at will. There's also alchemy and then mental powers, like mind-reading, mind control (which is usually weak or subtle) and clairvoyance. Its such a huge grab bag of different things- I try to categorize them with "worldly", "hellish" or "heavenly." Its mostly moral-based I suppose. Anyways i just like yapping lol

      Also magic exhausts the user, sometimes like sleep deprivation (hallucinations, irritability, etc.) or overexertion (soreness, weakness, collapse,etc.)

    I think there decision to make Luke care about Percy in the beginning was just awful. It will make it so that Luke starting to care at the end of the series is less impactful because it will mean he grew less and his suicide will be less impactful.

    I feel like one type of magic that was ommited is something I call "world's magic". Fantasy worlds are often worlds filled with magic and there are spells in some of those worlds that don't use your own magic, but instead use the magic from the world itself to be cast. That magic in the world is controlled by no one. It simply exists. It also is the source of all the magical plants and beasts that exist in fantasy worlds.

    You call them guides but you use the words "Laws" or "Only". Like those have the very strong connotation and even denotes the idea that it's meaning is finite or exclusive. That going outside of it would be considered "wrong" when as artists be it literary or any form one of the most important "rules" is knowing when to bend them.

    This is a great example, because yes, a lot of these can be mutual, hell magic items, for the most part are a mix of spells and divine intervention. A lot of them let you cast spells and a lot of them are eighter sentient or have some self control.

    I consider full metal alchemist a good example of hard magic for the way that transmutation circles work, Roy can yes produce fire with a single snap of his fingers because of the circle but since each circle in fma have to be specific to produce a specific reaction that means the Roy can only produce fire and nothing more, even though he can transmute more then fire he only has that specific circle so when he is put in a place where he is wet or his glove is destroyed he is in a corner, this also applies to Alphonse for a good portion of the show, he wasn’t able to transmute without a circle and he didn’t have circles inscribed into his arm so he carried chalk around and used that but since it takes a while to make those specific circles he usually prepares before hand getting his enemies to a specific area to then use it kinda like a trap. Characters like Edward have very specific restrictions to their all powerful abilities which was that he had to unwillingly sacrifice parts of his physical body to not have to use a circle but he still has the some of the same restrictions as other like he has to make a circle with his hands and he still needs to touch said item with hands. The only characters that don’t follow most of the rules that were set in place by the show were Edwards dad and the villain known as father but those two are the oldest known characters (out living generations) and they were the first people to really discover alchemy which after they spent their whole lives to the sciences so it makes sense that they found ways to bypass most of the rules even being able to transmute to a scale great then any other characters in the show. It’s a lot like Harry Potter but we don’t see Edward struggle with doing alchemy we instead see him outsmart his enemies with his alchemy and using it in smart ways, his dad and the villain father are like Gandalf and Voldemort we don’t know what they will do but we know it will be big or powerful

    I’m writing an urban fantasy Now that you mention it, the magic system, Druidry, is sort of like a combination between an enchantment and a spell. Druids are usually born with the innate ability to turn into an animal. Most of the time, this potential is unlocked When they join the order. But it has been known (in world) to happen randomly. (Enhancement) With proper training, a Druid can properly control their animal abilities to where they can add onto their own abilities. (Spell casting)

    what made me the most mad was what they did to annabeth. once they got out into the real world suddenly annabeth knew NOTHING about the greek myths, it was all percy. she didnt come up with the plans, it was percy (or grover) she did nothing. what was up with that. her whole thing is being smart and they took that away and gave it to percy. im not saying percy is dumb because he's not, but he as our protagonist thrown into this world is supposed to be just as clueless as the audience. hence annabeth where she explains what's going on. she is supposed to serve as our secondary narrator while feeding into her characterization. the protagonist is not supposed to know everything. its bad writing

    you say the Avatar ending feels poorly concluded and rushed? what are the elements in Avatar? Water, Earth, Fire, Air What are the names of the Avatar seasons? Book One: Water, Book Two: Earth, Book Three: Fire, and that it only 3 seasons that's what was intended the golden goose was not killed early that would be super embarrassing if it was. Book 4: Air each season was 20 episodes but the last was 21, so perhaps can you Imagine how mad you would be knowing their are actually 20 episodes missing from your child hood and guidance in life. how differently would your life would have turned out with 20 more episodes of Iroh temperance, with Aang's innocent, understanding, and forgiveness, Sokka bravery and growth, Zuko dealing with anger and a difficult parent, can every problem in your life can be traced to missing those episodes absolutely, would your life be better in every way most likely. you know I heard the missing episodes were actually made they are just keeping them from the public, because people would be too well adjusted and not need them or the products they sell you as you try to fill the missing hole in your heart from a lack of those vary episodes. so go get them, take them back fulfill that missing piece of your life and if they cry out in pain that the episodes were never made you will know they are lying because for sure like they lied about the possibility of them ever being made, so they are liars and likely have the episodes hidden somewhere they just need a little more pain. and anything you do that might be viewed as immoral is perfectly justified because you never had the moral guidance of those missing episodes.

    My first thought with Annabeth’s regret plot line that wasn’t finished was that the writers were setting things up for future seasons. Like they were planting seeds for the story to come back up in later seasons/episodes when it’s more important to the overarching story.

    So to summarize, magic comes in the form of performance, things, some other character (who is more capable than most characters), and/or talents. Why not use those words to be more clear? Because you want to sound mysterious and stick to a magic theme? It seems your video can be even more succinct with "I am, I do, I appeal, I have". In these terms, I think it's exhaustive. And put into these terms reflect, the points how anything is or can be accomplished.

    The example from philosopher's stone is not dissatisfying. There was some factor that prevented voldy killing Harry as a baby, and it is a mystery because possible answers are not well known. The early Harry Potter books are mystery books, and that must be kept in mind when critiquing them. It's ok to leave the explanation to later, especially if the book obviously focuses on mysteries and it comes in the same book.

  • @audioblogs12
    @audioblogs12 27 днів тому

    The example you use of an "unsatisfying" scene from Harry Potter in relation to the first law wasn't leaves some of the book's setup out of the equation. Albus tells Harry to remember that the reanimated corpses are weak to fire. It's the movie's fault for leaving out that detail.

    4:53 true, a writer can’t write everything in every writing style, no wonder they’re called differently: 1. Author 2. Screenwriter 3. Songwriter All I’m saying is people need to differentiate between one writer to another writer, just because they can creative write something, it doesn’t mean they can do that in every creative writing everything.

    in my opinion the reason they didn't know who aunty em was because they were tired in the books when they find her cafe its in the middle of the night after being attacked on their bus by the furies, the bus exploded they lost almost all of the things they had and they were running through the forest before they saw the sign which they couldn't red properly because of the dyslexia, they were hungry and starving so they took her offer for food because they didn't have any real options left, and medusa wanted to kill Annabeth because Athena turned her into a monster and wanted to collect grover. Also the problem with Sally was that it wasn't that she couldn't fight back against Gabe but she wouldn't to protect Percy from monsters

    In the book, the reason Percy and Annabeth don't realise they are in Medusa's lair until it's too late is because they are sleep deprived, starving, exhausted, and most importantly, being manipulated by the Mist. Medusa is using magic to confuse Percy and Annabeth, making them hyper focus on the cheeseburgers to the point that they don't notice the obvious hints of danger. Grover is the only one who's clocking any of the signs, and that's only because he can smell Medusa's monster scent. Also, I greatly dislike what they did to Gabe. They toned him down way too much and turned him into basically a comic relief, loveable asshole. That's not what he was in the books, and it complete destroys Sally's character. Gabe was supposed to be basically a representation of humanity's flaws. Sally married him because he was so disgustingly human that he overrode Percy's demigod nature. And if you make Gabe not the complete piece of shit that he was, you completely take away why Sally was with him in the first place. In the book, Sally endured pain, suffering, and even physical abuse from Gabe just to protect Percy. It showed her strength of character and bravery. The fact that she was able to remain such a kind and gentle person throughout all that earned so much respect from me. And that's completley taken away in the show. It's never explained why Sally is with him, he is nowhere near as bad, and Sally is able to control him very easily. There is no characterization there. There's no bravery or strength there.

    Focusing on Percy Jackson and how resolving conflict with magic feels, I think it's important to consider how the series is heavily focused on it's roots as Greek epics. The magic is often a tool to resolve conflict, but often characters who rely on it too much may be scorned by the very Gods they relied on. The Greek gods are very fickle, even with those they support. As a result Percy Jackson often looks at the magic he can use as an unreliable tool until he can master it, and at that point it's clear that he understands his own limits and when needed asks those that could aid him. Plus he intends to honor Pan in respecting nature, so he defers to local deities when possible. I definitely hadn't considered your perspective though. Just wanted to chime in. Also realizing I watched both parts back to back and don't remember if this is responding to the first or second. Lol.

    • @aweetodd
      @aweetodd Місяць тому

      I believe its call Kishōtenketsu. Its a popular Asian story telling format that doesn't require conflict and normally reveals a twist early in the story that hooks the reader/veiwer

    • @appledough3843
      @appledough3843 Місяць тому

      @@aweetodd It’s pretty much establishing one tone that is opposite to the hook or something similar to the hook early on. You establish one tone and then there’s a jarring change to another tone like in the promised neverland. The sheer contrast of tones gives it a strong punch. It’s more memorable. It stays with you longer. It hits you deeper. Something similar was done on a smaller and shorter scale in the movie whiplash with Miles Teller and J.K Simmons. The instructor seemed nice and patient at first but then lashed out and threw a chair and Miles’ character. It was unexpected and hit us deeper because of the previous establish character and tone of the character was turned on it’s head.

    • @aweetodd
      @aweetodd Місяць тому

      @appledough3843 that makes a lot of sense. It's been a minute since i looked into it but from how I understand it. The main point of the format is after the hook/twist the story focuses on the characters and how they react to it so i can see how the whiplash needs to be impactful

    • @appledough3843
      @appledough3843 Місяць тому

      @@aweetodd Yeah and I think it’s also better to do something like this early on rather than later in the story because you’re not yet invested in the tone established. It’s easier for audiences to accept that the tone was changed early on. But if you change the tone halfway through the story the change might be too jarring that it will upset audiences. So that might be why I see this writing tool being done early on in stories. But that’s just me

    A key factor of Divine intervention bends the Will of the Characters to the Service of the Divine Being. Wizards use (and are used by) Dark Magics to do what They Will.. But Clerics / Priests / Monks powers are in the service of and to their Deity's Will. Thus Divine intervention has the Deity as the spellcaster and their servants are their tools. Diabolical forces work in a similar fashion, usually consuming & destroying the servants in their quests. Good Deities Bless their faithful followers with beneficial powers to serve their own ends.
