How to Upgrade Your Magic System: (Sanderson's 3 Laws)
So I paused the video right when you first came on screen (entrance was smooth) but why was my immediate thought you look a lot like the annabeth from the books😂
The fact that the creators thought that the Greek goddess Athena would actually lay with a black guy and degrade herself and make her daughter Annabeth, the blue eyed girl in the book a black person that’s why this failed. Skin color politics destroyed Disney.
The thing is, Harry Potter is like a very DEEP magic system. Not COMPLEX, but DEEP. There is a difference in complexity and depth. Complexitiy is basically how many rules and exceptions and everything there is in something. Depth is how many possibilites there are within that something. Case in point: Chess & Go. Both are games that really don't have a lot of rules, for chess you have 6 pieces and all their movement, checkmate, castling and en passant. Thats it. However, it is SO deep that we have yet to crack it. Even computers have not 'solved' the game. Same with Go. Literally one rule and one piece. If we compare that to, say Cluedo or even the Game of Life, or Monopoly, you can see that all these games have more COMPLEXITY than the above games. Cluedo has 3 people who could have killed, the sheet, etc etc. Game of Life has every single space as its own unqiue action(mostly, there are some that repeat) plus there are all the special places, and Monopoly has building, mortgaging, auctions, special die, chance & community chest etc. However, Cludeo, Game of Life, Monopoly, these lack in depth COMPARITIVELY. Yea there is SOME strategy, and Cluedo & Monopoly have meta strats and everything, but you can't say they are on the same level as Chess & Go. This is what Harry Potter is. A Simple system, but it is SO deep. And you can see the evidence of it being so deep purely by the fact that 1: I would say Harry Potter ties with LOTR for the most popular fantasy story. 2: As of Fanfiction, Harry Potter has THE MOST fanfiction made for. Which i think is a good indicator, seeing that a deep thought provoking story will cause someone to think and theorize and then write stories for.
As for Guns, i think we saw Vernon trying to use one on Hagrid. Yes, you can say that he was inexperienced etc etc. But the thing is, once that was tried and it became known as a threat, i doubt that wizards wouldn't be able to come up with a counterspell. Heck, i think Protego stops physical things too
It's just pure trash writing. I just watched a really good show and I feel pity of Percy Jackson's direction and plot. They're like using 1 last of their brain cell.
For me, Hard vs Soft magic depends on 2 things. Predictibility and Repeatibility. If you do something, and the outcome of that is both predictable and repeatable (by doing the exactly the same thing again), that is a Hard Magic IMO (and vica versa) So in Harry Potter, when you swish and flick your wand and say "wingardium leviosa" and the item you are pointing at floats. That is a Hard magic. An example of Soft Magic would be Liquid Luck, again in Harry Potter. It is repeatable, but not predictable what its outcome will be. Or divination
In fact, i think we can map these onto real life things too. Physics would be Hard, when Quantum Physics would be soft
You look like Tonks lol
Hype
Anabeth was in the books blonde... no hate against black ppl. but why???
I wasn’t initially interested in watching the show, but my brother kept insisting, so I eventually gave it a try. I have to say, the series does show potential, and I completely agree with everything you mentioned-it even reminded me of a few key points from the book. Regarding the portrayal of Annabeth in the PJS, I think the writers might have been trying to adapt Annabeth’s character to fit a Black actress, which is a common challenge in TV shows where a traditionally white character is portrayed by a Black actor. In these cases, the dialogue sometimes feels overly scripted or unnatural, as though the writers are overcompensating to avoid stereotypes. When Black actors play side characters, their roles often lack depth, with the writing relying heavily on highlighting their race instead of crafting a well-rounded character. This approach can come across as lazy, but in Annabeth’s case, being a central character puts even more pressure on the writers to strike the right balance-one that doesn’t sacrifice authenticity for the sake of appearing progressive.
thors hammer mjölnir is presented compleatly wrong in the movies. it just has a way too short handle and is extreamly heavy, so even thor needs special gloves and belt to lift it.
Tbh I think it’s kinda ironic how they made Percy blond and made Annabeth black…. (No hate but still it’s kinda ironic).
I felt kinda betrayed because author had control over it. I just... wanted the same emotions i felt when i read the books. It feel's so off the note and i felt this had to be animated, animation would fit so much better but jesus i don't know why they had to made every single characther different. It felt soo wrong, i felt 0 charm, 0 love. It felt like it was done then lunch break, i mean i get it, money of course but damn
I think the hardest part of building a magic system is explaining and justifying the fuel of magic (The force that activates magic)

I personally enjoyed the show and look forward to season 2. I didn't like the changes to Sally though, and hated that scene with her and the much younger Percy in the car, that was so unnecessary. Most of the changes aren't bad though. At least it's faithful to the main plot points and did the majority of them well. I thought Annabeth was a bit too bossy and annoying though, from what I can remember, it's more so than she was in the book. Hopefully the flaws of the first season can be fixed for the second.
The show sucks, I could write a novel about why it sucks but I’m not gonna because I don’t wanna be that guy. But yeah Grover pretty much says nothing but exposition the whole time. Should’ve been animated then everyone would be happy, if the writing was good
wild that a random UA-camr looks more like Annabeth than the actress in the show 🤡
25:09 maybe Thalia
3:29 NO WAY I USED TO ALWAYS RECORD THE SPELLS OR WRITE THEM DOWN
Fireball.. pff. LIGHTNING BOLT!! LIGHTNING BOLT!! LIGHTNING BOLT!! LIGHTNING BOLT!!
All of this information is so helpful! You're very good at explaining things and getting into detail. Thankyou!
3:48 to be more precise, in the Harry Potter books it is explained that skilled\experienced wizards can *think* of the magic words instead of saying them aloud. It is said that it is harder to cast spells this way and requires a bit of training to do it, so if you're casting a certain spell for the first time, you'd probably fail if you try to mind-cast it instead of saying the words. Not that this really changes any point in the video, just wanted to expand on that
It was marketed as book accurate and better than the movies, (and dont come for me for this) but I feel like the movies at least ATTEMPTED accuracy at some points, and rven acheived it at points. There were also at least a few scenes in the movies that would've fit right in with the humor in the books. So the show comes out and it's nothing like the books. Major disappointment. They changed pretty much everything. Others can enjoy it and love it, but the Percy Jackson book series(and Heroes of Olympus) were my escape from shitty reality as a kid and I reread them when im having a hard time coping. They _are_ a coping mechanism for me. Are there things to inprove or change in the books? Yes. But the show didn't fix any of that, it just kinda....did everything and nothing at the same time. I was desperately hoping to see my beloved series on a screen, but it was basically trampled over by Disney(I stopped trusting them with Adaptations after the travesty that was Artemis Fowl) and Rick himself. Years of waiting and excitement down the drain. It felt like a betrayal. There were gods in there that shouldn't have been, they took away the best part of Sally's character, they neutered Gabe and thus the main source of Percy's emotional instability, they took away all traces of Magic and wonder, and more. It's just frustrating. Is it still "gatekeeping" if the source material seems like it was used as a coaster for someone's drink rather than the primary material to base the show on?
I've read throne of glass and wanted to get into the full series but wasn't sure if it'd be worth my time. after seeing this I think I'll give the whole series a real chance again :3
I think Jo Jo’s does the concept way better than mha of specific powers being used creatively. Both because they do end up being more creative with the use of their powers but also because for most stands in jojo’s they don’t get power ups, they usually stay with the same abilities from start to end (excluding some particular people). Whereas mha went to root of introducing an awakening to powers where characters can just get a free power up at connivence And by god do they not do that with the main character too. Dude does like 3 interesting things with his power and from then on it’s just receiving power up after power, receiving extra powers or boosts in power that totally ignore the established consequences or limits of his ability.
If the movies didnt exist everyone would hate this series.
I actually just finished Cinder yesterday! I really enjoyed the premise and the characters but was disappointed by its pacing and inconsistency with how powerful the Lunar Queen was, seemed like she could’ve easily taken over but just decided not to. Maybe there will be a reason in the later books idk SYCTHE!! I LOVE Neal Shusterman’s work on that series, the Everlost trilogy, and the Unwind series great guy A good Horror book if you’re interested is Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes: it’s about this abandoned luxury cruiser in space! One book that I HAVE to recommend is “The Dead Take The A-Train” by Cassandra Khaw: it’s about this demon hunter in modern New York and it’s really gory. If you like descriptive scenes of power and abominations this books monsters and the main characters magic is just phenomenal The main character can’t use magic well so she has to stitch spells into her skin and when she casts them, they get ripped out also ripping out fat and blood and ah! It’s amazing One series I must recommend as well is “The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel” It’s follows these twins of prophecy ~The two that are one must become the one that is all. One to save the world, one to destroy it~ Has a wonderful magic system, great characters and lots of tie-ins with various mythology I’m also starting a few series right now so I really can’t say to much about them but figured I’d list them: The Gone series, The Ninth trilogy, and this standalone book called Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong Have a wonderful day! And I’m so happy your channel popped up!
Same! I love Neal Shusterman. His worlds are always so interesting. Thanks so much for the recommendations! Seriously! I have been looking for a good horror book for a while. It's a genre I haven't dived into yet. And that other book sounds amazing! I love a good, gory magic system.
Pirates of the carrabin?😂
i loved both verssions tbh, the book version shows the annabeth trauma with spiders
I just want a animated show of HoO, at this point i just gave up
The show, to me, lost so much by telling and not showing. In the books, you can feel so much from the characters and their personalities from their interactions... it felt, like you said, souless and rushed and just exposition, just reprising the scenes and not building on the characters and the universe
This was a very solid video! I bought every Percy Jackson with my own money when I was a kid too! Really appreciate your measured and well thought outtake.
I love how the start is a reference to the actual start and I love it (I’ve only read the book but we might watch the movie in school)
The books will forever be iconic in a way that this series will never be Book Percy, Annabeth and Grover are GOATED
Loved that opening!
Um hve you seen Owl House? If not, I'm not sure what to say as you have a lot of paraless with your outline and that. You're main character even has the same name. I'm not sure if I should tell you to go watch it because I don't want you to get in trouble if you get to close to it in your writing. But at the time time maybe if you see it you can make some tweaks to distance yourself from it ... Not to mention you would probably enjoy it. That said the more you talked the less you seemed like it. But if you haven't maybe you should look into it just to be safe.
A while back I watched season one but didn't get around to finishing it. I honestly don't remember much of the story other than the witch mentor and the school setting. Thanks for letting me know! I'll give it a watch and make sure I'm not subconsciously copying it. I hope that's not the case. 😅 And I also can't believe they have the same name too! That's so weird.
I've only read 1 pirate book (sadly), Sandokan: The Pirates of Malaysia by Emilio Salgari, it's kinda old, not bad but nothing impressive, so that's why I asked XD, I feel like we need more great pirate books in the world, haha Congratulations on 5k!!!
Agreed! I would love some good Pirate books.
Loved your answer! Also writing about witches so twins😂 your world sounds so fun and Lucy gonna be struggling
Oh, that's awesome!! Have you gotten very far on your story?
@@moonangel97 Much farther since I started re-reading first chapters that I really enjoyed, It gave me a good base to jump off of thanks to your videos!
Oh my goodness. That's so wonderful to hear!! Let me know how your progress goes! I would love to hear when you have a rough draft started or chapters written.
Wait why haven’t I been notified for your new content >:O Congradulations!! :D
Also my fiancé loves laughing at me during my livestreams trying to pronounce names 😭 xD
Thank you!!!
Oh man, reading and livestreaming together is a nightmare 😅
@@moonangel97 hahaha xD -fist bump-
Nothing wrong with this
Do you not realize most of the people watching will have already read the books
Hahaha the start of this video!
Excellent video! Very impressive. Imho you messed up the "divine intervention" part. It's a mix of summoning or creating familiars, servants, pets etc. (which is an effect subclass, not a method like spells); unintentional/uncontrolled magic; and actual intervention by gods or the universe (eg. fate). It felt a bit less thought through than your other examples.
im thinkin the Battlemage Farmer book series by Seth Ring where magic is rooted in runes, alchemy and... im drawin a blank on the word but say.. making a magic shield that pops out of a bracer on activation. Alchemy for the material thats marked with runes and sealed or whatever with blank... great now i gotta go reread that particular section.. sorry folks. Anyway, thats the most relavent non mainstream example i nerded out on recently.
I want to summon an army of undead kittens!
My poor Annabeth, look at how the tv show ruined you 😭💔 (you’re so on point with all the criticisms, I honestly just stopped watching it after episode 5, skimmed the last episode only for the scenes with Toby stephens)
Idk why y'all are blaming Disney when Riordan asked all of this stuff to be in there. I think this is more of a issue of Riordan thinking he needs to overlycorrect his work
