I thought Zuko's scar was really lame, it looked like makeup to me. Flaws in characters are key to attaching ourselves to these characters. I loved Katara so much because I found her annoying and her annoyance in the cartoon is very realistic and actually refreshing. I found her annoying too because I also share a lot of characteristics with her, like my perfectionistic type A tendencies. I found myself relating to Katara the most when she was jealous/envious of Aang and his ability to learn waterbending and getting good at it way faster than her. There were none of those flaws seen in the live action version. That’s too bad.
I had a really hard time that the movements for the bending didn't feel like they had purpose or reason. It's like they told them "now do a magical motion with your hands". There are a few that are okay, like the earth wall at episode 1 for example but even that I feel should be snappyer. There were a bunch of movements that felt like they could have been for any of the other elements. I really liked in the original show that the magic system was based in many ways and here it lost all of it. Each element was defined through specific martial arts, and each element felt like it had a very unique vibe. Water = smooth, Earth = powerful, Fire = uncontrollable, Air = malleable. (not exactly but I hope this gives enough of a feeling to what I'm trying to say)
It's funny because episodes 3 and 4 were the ones I liked the least 😅. I didn't like how disconnected everyone felt from each other, since they each had their own thing, and Aang kind of felt like an afterthought to both Katara and Sokka's issues, and viceversa with Bumi. I definitely did NOT enjoy this version of Bumi AT ALL. He was way too agressive to Aang. Imo, adults were way too harsh to Aang, specially in this version that does not mean to leave at all. It feels icky to me... he is a child! Iroh and Zukko were cool, though, and I did like their flashbacks in ep 4
Yeah, I didn't like Bumi. They definitely made him and Aang way too serious. He doesn't even teach Aang anything like he does in the original. and though Aang teaches him that you can rely on friends, Aang then immediately changes his mind in the last episode. (And, I just realized, never proves everyone saying "Be alone" wrong! What was the lesson? "Friends hold you back"??) Tbh I think I enjoyed the episodes when Sokka and Katara were separate from Aang because every time Aang was on screen it just reminded me that he isn't the playful kid from the original.
The only change that worked perfectly is zuko 41st division addition . The writers only had that 1 bright idea. The show definitely does not capture the essence of the original characters. Katara was the worst I don’t know if it’s the actress or the script but my girl was giving NOTHING.

The ironic thing is, if you're looking for a more mature story that doesn't talk down to its audience or spout constant exposition, then the "kid's show" is the way to go. I dunno why the live action remake seems to be completely incapable of understanding the concept of "show, don't tell." The animated series _shows_ you the characters, and gives a lot of key information within only a few sentences. It trusts the audience to be able to pick up on context clues and visual hints... Meanwhile the live action (which is supposed to be more mature and for adults) just kind _tells_ the audience, as if it doesn't believe they would be able to figure out what's going on for themselves. It feels almost insulting sometimes. I genuinely wanted to like the remake... But I just can't. There's so many little annoying things that just suck. The dialogue doesn't feel natural most of the time, the exposition is _constant,_ and the actors kinda struggle to speak with actual emotion. Everything comes out sounding deadpan. They also ruined Iroh. He doesn't feel like Iroh at all, and doesn't even seem that wise anymore. :(
I was really hoping this show would be a bit more mature than the animated series since the original audience is now adults, but I completely agree that it's more for kids than the animated one. It doesn't dive into any complex themes or struggles, and (with the exception of a few people being burned alive) it only serves to dumb-down the narrative of the original.
I thought the show was okay! There can definitely be a lot of improvements. I wish they let the main trio have mor character moments like in the show instead of plot heavy moments. Hopefully it better in season 2.
I totally hated the scene with Koh the face stealer, there was no urgent to an EVIL SPIRIT CAPTURING YOUR FRIENDS, he had the opportunity to go to different places, get captured and held and still came back in time to save his friends, ruined the Threat and Menace of KOH
@@tstimbo3471 exactly that's the point, that's why koh scene is one of the greatest scenes in the og show. But I guess you would prefer action, action, exposition dialogue, action, action. @@tstimbo3471 he never made threats, all he tries to do is get a rise out of Aang so he can steal his face but Aang didn't take the bait. That scene was so tense bcos you didn't know if Aang would show any emotions and it isn't until he's left Koh's cave. That's suspense, not whatever they tried to do in the LA
I really liked your PJO video and this too. However, I kept getting hung up on the fact that in this video you keep referring to the fact that they HAD to remove plot lines, etc to fit it into a shorter time frame/episode count but like the overall runtime of the live-action show is the same, if not even a little longer than the animated show. So I'm somewhat confused as to why they had to remove/combine any plotlines at all. (Except to change the plot, which is fine if done right) Then on top of that, adding season 2 plotlines to reduce content for future seasons seems so... idk. Especially because they already aren't following certain story beats that are so vital in the original, such as THE COMET??? (which I understand from a production POV). I couldn't even finish the first episode of the live-action so I can't really say much... but if you're saying that Sokka has basically no proper part in the Jet storyline, I think that's so tragic just from a characterization stance. Him saving an entire village after being clowned on by Aang and Katara the entire episode and then at the same time highlighting Katara and Aang's naivety through infatuation is so interesting. ESPECIALLY the way the village gets flooded and you as a viewer and all the characters within the show believe that the village was flooded with all its people and them experiencing the weight of contributing to the mass murder of innocent people. So compelling!!! Especially for a kid show?!?! Like I don't know if a single episode of the live-action can beat that one episode. For real one of my fav episodes. This comment is obvi not supposed to be hateful towards you but I also thought it was so funny when you kept referring to Koh as "The face eater" and not stealer, made me giggle, wanted to point that out.
I thought about this a lot. I watched this knowing the Netflix series was longer than the animated series, and a lot of questions came to mind: why didn't they just make the series 22 episodes instead of 8? Why not copy the animated show and just add a few extra bits? Etc. Honestly, even though I say an adaptation shouldn't copy its predecessor I think when it comes to Avatar I have to make an exception. It's just too perfect of a show already. I would have enjoyed the live action more if it was just an exact copy of the original, but in that case, what's the point in making an adaptation at all? What I am trying to say is that while I love the original more and see no reason to change it, I also see that the studio wanted to create something unique, and if they tried to keep in all the original episodes and cram them into an 8 episode structure, they would have to change plots and settings 3 times an episode, which would've felt a lot more messy than what they ended up with. btw, I love comments and feedback like this. I love different perspectives. Face Eater...🤦♀️oops.
But without the context of the original series, would those hand full of piano notes have had even remotely the same impact? I kinda feel like someone who had never seen the original would hear that and just think "OK this is sad piano music number five". Where for people who have seen the original it is Iroh pouring his heart out in Ba Sing Se, honoring the memory of the son he lost in the war.
I thought about this same thing, and it's so hard to take myself out of the mindset of a person who has the context of the original Iroh scene, but I do think the scene itself still holds an emotional impact to those who haven't. We still have this super sweet interaction between Zuko and Iroh, with Zuko choosing to sit by his side so that he wouldn't be alone, and then we hear Iroh's shaky breath and see the small quiver in his lip and the tear. His actor manages stoic sadness/gratitude masterfully. I think this scene is still done very well. The music just adds that much more for the fans.
Let's be real, nowadays an "adaptation" is just innuendo for "we are creatively bankrupt and too afraid to come up with something original so let's recreate an already successful IP and call it an adaptation so that we can block off criticism by saying we didn't want to create the original 1 to 1". This show would never be discussed if this was something original. It would be one of those mediocre Netflix shows that noone gives a sh*t about and will probably will be forgotten forever. But no let's fk up the childhoods of millions of fans and stir up some fake controversy and rake in some cheap views and money. Well done Netflix, you succeeded... In mediocrity.
What do you mean @11:08 "Aang still talks to Kyoshi"?? He doesn't talk to her in the animated series until Book 3, and you don't even hear from her until Book 2. Also, that scene where Kyoshi wipes the floor with the fire nation is dumb. In the animated series that was Roku taking over Aang, showing us master firebending. Showing us precision. He melted metal chains off of people without burning them. That was a show of power *and* control. But in the netflix series, we just have Kyoshi showing power and no precision. It literally went from here is what MASTER bending looks like to hur hur big boom. That scene was insulting to Roku's skills and it was insulting to Kyoshi. Sure, she was powerful, we see her BREAK OFF A PIECE OF LAND FROM A CONTINENT in the show, but even that took thought and some level of control. In this she's basically throwing a tantrum, and, in terms of the Avatar's raw power, it wasn't even that impressive. Terrible scene, waste of effects budget and screen time.
my take. the movie's southern air temple scene is better. he fly now? yes he fly now but not really. the boring episodes that you said in the animation are essential for character growth. it's a well use filler. lu ten's funeral scene feels flat for me. we haven't had that deep connection with zuko and uncle iroh to warrant an emotion especially if you haven't seen the carttons. i didn't like when people excuse that it's only 8 episodes and it's live action. I don't know why it's now accepted to have 8 episodes. saying it's live action doesn't mean that there's no character development, poor writing, dialogue and acting. i love uncle iroh but i didn't really feel the live action iroh has that heart. i think it's the writing's fault. 5.5/10 for me. it's visually entertaining and try not think if you want to enjoy the show if you have seen the cartoons.
6:00 the scariest thing for me was when Ko was first appeared, I didn’t expect to see him this soon and the way he came for Katara was creepy to me, it reminds me of the bend neck lady from the haunting of Hill house. 9:55 20 episodes, not 24. 13:38 my favorite episode is episode 6.
I think part of the problem is that they are trying to cram too much into too short a time frame. I've noticed this with quite a few of the modern series. Especially with streaming services, where instead of having at least 13 episodes with each one being ~44 minutes long for live action, they instead only make 8 episodes which variety widely in length and often are even shorter than the standard tv episode. If Netflix had made this series with 13 episodes in the first season, then they could easily have included every episode from the animated series and still have had room to include some new materials. I personally only actually saw the first two episodes of the live action series while at a friend's house, but based on what you said in the video and a number of comments that I read, I don't think that I'm going to bother watching the rest of the series when I have the original on DVD and can enjoy it a lot more.
The way you feel about Percy Jackson is the way I feel about Avatar and visa versa. I'm deeply offended by the Avatar show, but Percy Jackson was campy but enjoyable. It felt like a long ad for a Disney World Experience.
The visuals and the acting are the only merits I found in this. While I hated the change to the script and story, I felt like this was a well acted bad story. When they announced it was going to be 8 episodes, I expected trimmed fat, but new stories that didn't add anything. I definitely wouldn't consider watching further seasons. However, if there's actors and the effects teams made a different reboot I'd check that out
U can't fix what isn't broken. Primary rule. Every adaptation thinks they can make a classic even better by their own ideologies and agendas. We know what is the result of that, besides One Piece. Katara character is again victim of woke brigade, similarly Aang and Sokka too. Whole thing feels like the adaptation of Fire Nation play from animation instead of the actual one. Uninspired acting, no real chemistry, extreme lack of humor, very wooden expressions. Most impressive was Zhao and Zuko a bit. Azula and Katara are the worst. Aang is basically reading fortune cookies in front of camera in every scene. Most actors felt like reading script, not being the character. Only characters felt organic was Zhao and bit of Zuko by end. Felt natural Here Aang keeps talking like he is reading fortune cookies. They forgot to make him organic which Luffy was. A naturally loving character with depth when required. Here, not sure why, they portrayed a kid who acts like a 100 yr old. This show is so dry besides action sequences as if having the comedy would give them allergies. Everything feels so artificial. I wish they worked even half as honestly and sincerely on characterization, dialogues and acting as much they worked on CGI. Most characters feel so disconnected and just acting Doesn't matter how good u do in CGI, this show feels like missing the soul and chemistry. Lots of dialogues are just narrated, not felt. Acting is not as expected at all. Changes in characters is such a bad habit. Why do u ruin a iconic character by extra creative? I will blame direction and storytelling for this than actors. Now I know why Avatar team didn't stay with them till end. The first earth bender and lord Sozin did more acting in barely 5 mins or so than all of them together in rest of the episode. That says a lot. How u handle woman empowerment matters. Also there is a difference between being woke and being a strong woman with character. They didn't even show master Paku being her grandma's fiance since that would lessen the impact of cruel patriarchy and victimhood. They needed another woman to show Paku how small minded he is. Katara was never called a master by anyone but Aang. Here she is master already. Even she trained with Paku too before teaching Aang. Here she doesn't require it, neither Aang. As usual flawless woman character. That is the biggest flaw. Didn't even show her stealing the scroll since that would ruin the perfect image. Stopped Zuko's massive attack in first ep itself while just learning bending few moments back. So many are there only if u notice it. If u only felt something is off about this Katara before, then these are the reason. The usual habit of using woman characters to propagate an agenda
You made solid points here but you need to stop using the word woke bcos you don't know what it is. Woke is not the same thing of girlbossification or bad writing/characterization and it is a bastardization of an actual term created by the Black community to help each other stay safe. You using the word the way you used it in your comment is offensive and really invalidates the genuine point you were trying to make. That said, I agree that the live action sucks and it's nothing but a cash grab and as long as we keep consuming them, they're never gonna go away
I would say its great just not perfect it does have it flaws and i will only give it a 7 out of 10 and I did rewatch Since I am getting tired of nothing new that happened in avatar after korra The comics are not interesting that much and novels are boring since people barely talk about them or tell there story Even the fanmade avatar stuff end up dying in the end And even i would say the og show does have it fair share of flaws like example yue hair not turning black after giving her energy to the moon spirit or her not being able to water bend when she has the moon spirit power and also there is a animation error when moon yue kiss sokka before she go there was a error where sokka teleported to kiss her aka a missing frame that nobody notice All I am saying is Without this netflix show I would have never ever ever rewatch avatar or korra ever again Yes I am a fan of this show both og and netflix But repeating the same thing over and over again is not good And i hope they start showing new shoes like the promised avatar movie they said and even i hope they make the comics animated since comics tend to get retconned alot aka monsterverse recently So yeah thx to show i can rewatch the og show lol
I think you have to go into a show like this and just go along with the ride. Adapting a masterpiece will never stand up to what came before.. Besides Lord of The Rings, it's never really been done.. Unless the source material was super average and they turned it into a masterpiece. I treat this Netflix show like I do 90s Hercules, its fun and chill to watch. I'm waiting for the day that they do Attack on Titan, no matter how good it is... It would never beat the original.
great video imma subscribe. i think Netflix avatar has alot of similar problems to the disney percy jackson show. I think the dialogue was really weak in both but especially netflix avatar. it looks like avatar and replicates things but it loses so much =( I came away really disliking Netflix avatar. i hated the pacing and structure for netflix avatar, it had more runtime combined stuff but lost way more of the development. I am glad they kept a different angle on Bumi but it was not worth it when they left omashu, and dont even have Aang practice any water bending before the north pole or with master pakku. That was so disappointing for me. i was really disappointed with how they added azula and gave her basically nothing to do. The blue orange color grading was so annoying. It made the show really jarring to me. only save for the finale when it went totally changed.
I know this is all opinion and everyone is entitled to their own opinion... but your opinion became invalid when you said you liked episode 4 the best 😂. 3 strikes. The runtime was not significantly different and i hate when people use that trash excuse for this show. Same thing happened with one piece and i hated it. You like the secret tunnel part? Dafuq? It missed the whole point of the original and almost implied incest is the way to overcome challenges 😂. The zuko stuff was cool buuut Bumi really made me cry. And not in a good way.
2 months later, I think the show is just forgettable. It wasn't anything to get excited about or be angry about. It's just forgettable and leaves no lasting impact on me.
Totally agree with most of what you said! The live action had a difficult task with adapting 24 episodes of plot into 8 episodes, but all in all they did a pretty good job. It didn't measure up to the original, and I'm not sure that's possible because of some of the cuts they have to make (Aang riding the unagi, no pirates, no Jeong Jeong) where they have to tell to fill in the gaps instead of show.
Man there are child actors in one piece adaptation as well and they are younger than these kids and they did a solid job if you haven't watched it then i suggest you to watch the adaptation

💯
Have you ever thought about comparing the adaptations of "Mo Dao Zu Shi"?
laughable that they tried to improve upon the perfection that is avatar
my take.
the movie's southern air temple scene is better.
he fly now? yes he fly now but not really.
the boring episodes that you said in the animation are essential for character growth. it's a well use filler.
lu ten's funeral scene feels flat for me. we haven't had that deep connection with zuko and uncle iroh to warrant an emotion especially if you haven't seen the carttons.
i didn't like when people excuse that it's only 8 episodes and it's live action.
HAHHHA that beginning🤣 WATER!! *_SPLASH_*
22:29 my favorite episode in this live action show is episode 6 because of the section 41 or whatever it called and Zuko.
However, if there's actors and the effects teams made a different reboot I'd check that out
29:05 "This was a pretty short video." Riiiiiight...
😅 yeah, I probably should have cut that out. At the time, the video felt like it was going to end up 10 minutes long.
Felt natural
Here Aang keeps talking like he is reading fortune cookies. Most characters feel so disconnected and just acting
Doesn't matter how good u do in CGI, this show feels like missing the soul and chemistry.
I would say its great just not perfect it does have it flaws and i will only give it a 7 out of 10 and I did rewatch
Since I am getting tired of nothing new that happened in avatar after korra
The comics are not interesting that much and novels are boring since people barely talk about them or tell there story
Even the fanmade avatar stuff end up dying in the end
And even i would say the og show does have it fair share of flaws like example yue hair not turning black after giving her energy to the moon spirit or her not being able to water bend when she has the moon spirit power and also there is a animation error when moon yue kiss sokka before she go there was a error where sokka teleported to kiss her aka a missing frame that nobody notice
All I am saying is
Without this netflix show I would have never ever ever rewatch avatar or korra ever again
Yes I am a fan of this show both og and netflix
But repeating the same thing over and over again is not good
And i hope they start showing new shoes like the promised avatar movie they said and even i hope they make the comics animated since comics tend to get retconned alot aka monsterverse recently
So yeah thx to show i can rewatch the og show lol
Yes! Absolutely. This was my biggest takeaway from watching the Netflix show. It was okay but mainly a reason to rewatch the original show.
15:43 Pretty Sus
I think you have to go into a show like this and just go along with the ride. Adapting a masterpiece will never stand up to what came before.. Besides Lord of The Rings, it's never really been done.. Unless the source material was super average and they turned it into a masterpiece. I treat this Netflix show like I do 90s Hercules, its fun and chill to watch. I'm waiting for the day that they do Attack on Titan, no matter how good it is... It would never beat the original.
great video imma subscribe. i think Netflix avatar has alot of similar problems to the disney percy jackson show. I think the dialogue was really weak in both but especially netflix avatar. it looks like avatar and replicates things but it loses so much =(
I came away really disliking Netflix avatar.
i hated the pacing and structure for netflix avatar, it had more runtime combined stuff but lost way more of the development.
Percy Jackson was way better then this abomination🤔actors were way more convincing then the avatar actors, but to each their own
I know this is all opinion and everyone is entitled to their own opinion... but your opinion became invalid when you said you liked episode 4 the best 😂.
This has heart and percy Jackson doesnt? Huhhh. And the actors are way better child actors in percy
True about the acting, it the show here has more heart and emotion and spirit then the PJ show
2 months later, I think the show is just forgettable. It wasn't anything to get excited about or be angry about. It's just forgettable and leaves no lasting impact on me.
First!
It’s a 4/10 AT BEST
Good video, for me the biggest flaw of the show was the dialogue and Acting… hard to blame child and inexperienced actors tho
Man there are child actors in one piece adaptation as well and they are younger than these kids and they did a solid job if you haven't watched it then i suggest you to watch the adaptation
