My New Favorite Compost Bin
Переглядів 4574 місяці тому
It was 104 here today and I misspoke a time or two in this video. Sometimes it is frustrating when you don't realize you screwed up until you get to the editing stage and can't go back and reshoot the part. I want to point out that I said the carbon to nitrogen ratio is 3:1. It's actually 30:1. I don't really get excited about making it exact as long as there is enough "N" to keep up with the "...
Help! Which Ones to Choose?
Переглядів 2056 місяців тому
I've been invited to bring a few of my bonsai trees to the local food banks summer ice cream social. I have been busy doing other projects and have not yet decided which plants to take. I took a break from the patio project to ask for your help selecting a few plants to take. As usual I got long winded but I do show each of my trees that I am considering taking. Will you take a look at the vide...
Found this little Treasure Hiding in the Landscape
Переглядів 1018 місяців тому
While doing a walkabout in my Sister-In-Laws's landscape I spotted this little 3-year-old Sweetgum seedling. I could easily pop it from the ground and pot it with items I found in her garage. I'm looking forward to growing this tree out as bonsai.
Early Spring, Early Maple Re-pot
Переглядів 649 місяців тому
With an above-average February, several of my bonsai trees started to leaf out. I had not ordered my spring supplies yet. Luckily I had some leftover soil from last year I could use. I am pretty pleased with how the root system looked. I can start looking forward to building the trunk on this amur maple. Please share this video with someone who may find it interesting and if you haven't already...
Growing Elm in the ground to fix NEBARI Problem
Переглядів 1149 місяців тому
Three years ago I posted a video where I re-potted an elm that had a poor nebari. Several of you offered good suggestions and I elected to plant the tree back into the ground in hopes the roots would help swell the base of the tree.
Sweetgum's First Repot
Переглядів 1019 місяців тому
Last spring I dug several Sweetgum, Liquidambar styraciflua, seedlings. I planted a couple in the ground and one in a nursery pot. In this video, I take the tree out of it's pot for a quick root prune and then place it back into a wider pot. I am reusing old bonsai soil with some potting mix in it. I'm also adding a metal disk to help the roots grow horizontal and to help form a radial root sys...
Bad Landscaping Makes Me Angry
Переглядів 16211 місяців тому
I'm horribly disappointed in the way big box stores and chain restaurants are taking care of their landscapes in Salina. We have a city ordinance requiring businesses to include green space based on the size of the lot and the price of the building. To the best of my knowledge, the ordinance does not require the landscape or green space to be taken care of. I can't imagine that after spending t...
The topicals are coming in for the winter.
Переглядів 73Рік тому
The weather is finally cooling off and as a typical seasonal change will have it we'll go from summer hot to winter cold. Today I brought my ficus and lemon tree inside for the winter. I'll show you the trees and where I'll keep them for the winter. Contrary to rumors Taylor Swift does not make an appearance in this video.
Going to Nashville!

The contents in this video are not a product of the AZH, any zoo or any of the sponsors. This is not an official conference video. I know this isn't bonsai but I have promised in several videos to show you some of what I do at work. I can't think of anything better than showing off some of my favorite people and their talents. I want to thank the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere for hosting our 2023 ...
Watering, Profanity, and Nonsense.
Переглядів 123Рік тому
Right off the bat, I apologize for the profanity but the yellowjackets and heat were too much today. The main takeaway is to keep your trees hydrated, especially in horribly hot weather. submerging your pots is in my opinion the best way to fully water your soil.

Thanks for the update Gerrett. I hope you're doing well mate. All the best for winter and I hope you have a great Christmas with your family 😊
❤
Remember Mom and Dad need egg cartons!!
lol. I composted that for demonstration reasons.
I had no idea you could compost all of that stuff.. Thank you I’m going to buy a couple of those. 👍
Awesome! Just know to keep meat, cooking oil, and dairy out of your compost. I meant to mention that in the video. Thanks for your viewing support!
Nice updates on your trees, good sir. I vote both Elms, and the medium pine. Especially if those grow near you in the wild.
Thanks for the suggestion! I did end up taking the elms and the pine and then all the Ficus. The event had a great turnout and and I had a great bonsai conversation with many interested folks. Thanks for your viewing support!
No I would say "CHOPPIN IT!" but you're not far off. I would shoot for the moon with your best trees BUT maybe one from each "category"? Like Elm #1 for a deciduous, Pine #2 for the coniferous and then maybe one of the ficuses for the tropical category? I think you're right to play to the amateur (or less) audience and give them the range of bonsai can be. Most people think the word "bonsai" means "dying juniper branch in an ugly pot purchased from a mall kiosk" so seeing nice variation of species would be good.
The event had a great turnout and I was a little surprised at how many people have tried their hand in bonsai. There was actually some conversation about bonsai trees bought from little white vans that set up on corner lots. If I can find the time I'm sure I could get a local club started. I ended up taking the elms and the Ficus and the little pine. I think I'm going to spend the day with trees and try to shut out the rest of events of the day. Not really feeling the the day this year. As always i appreciate your viewing support and comments.
Little pine
What I do for the last mixing step is to pour the material between two large buckets , back and forth, works well.
Just looking back after a recommendation. I love the video style so guess i have a few more to get to the current year! I am going to dig up an old wisteria of mine and was hoping for some hands on advice and experience. I've never observed these as bonsai so looking forward to seeing your approach. What month did you dig this one up and what potting medium did you transfer it into?
Hi Dear, Your video content is really good. but views and subscribers are much lower. To increase subscribers and views, you need to do channel SEO meaning your videos are not fully SEO. SEO is not friendly to your title. The SEO score is very low. The main reason why videos go viral is because of video SEO and organic promotion. If you do SEO and promotion then lots of views and subscribers will come to your channel and you will be able to monetize your channel in a few days. I can help you. If you went
❤ wauw so big 👍💚
Hi
HOLA
Way to seize the moment! Nice find, good sir
Thank you kindly
Always bring a pot with you, that's what I say!
Ha!
I usually have the back full of honey bee swarm traps this time of year! lol, I never know when I'll be bringing home feral bees.
Those roots are coming along nicely. Time to start working on some branch structure now and you'll have yourself a killer tree in no time.
Free material, nice 👍🏼
Awesome!
Nice find!!
Great find sweet gums are great bonsai.. it’s always exciting to find something cool like that..😊
, if you want your channel to increase subscribers, views, likes and comments with proper video SEO, Google ads and monetization. It will be your right decision. Do you want to increase your SEO score? I am waiting for your response. Thank you.
Man, those trees like that Gerrett soil mix. Keep em coming!
WOA, look at that bad larry!! Love the direction that the tree is going in. My ONLY criticism, and i'm really digging here, is that you need to say "chopping" it at least...THREE times more when whacking a tree back like that. Otherwise this is looking great. Cheers buddy.
CHOP CHOP CHOP! lol Good advice! Damn near my entire collection is inside on the kitchen counter and dining room table. That unusually warm start to the year is now the second winter I expected. A couple tornados in the state and now freezing sleet. I appreciate you brother!
Good to see you man .. Thanks for sharing 😊
Good to hear from you! Thanks for your viewing support!
Great little repot Gerrett. I hope you're doing well
Thanks, you too! I am really looking forward to spring!
Cheers from Ojai Bonsai. Keep up the great videos
Thank you my friend!
Nice find. Keep doing good work man!
I love the trunk of your wisteria tree!
Your so right that it’s wild there’s no ordinance on MAINTAINING these green spaces after they are planted. My local grocery store just ripped out all our native shrubs because they looked bad…but it was because an endangered butterfly had made it their home. Just a shame. Great topic!
What a shame Lots of great trees going to waste.
It is a shame and it truly makes me angry. I going to attend a city tree board meeting next month and voice my concerns. I doubt it helps. Thank you for taking the time to watch my video!
Honestly I feel like this is the American corporate landscape in a nutshell; no real care of the outcome, and bare minimum of what is considered to be the “acceptable” final result. AND THEN they let it die, cuz why not. I share your frustration. It brings me back to the first time I went to Europe when was younger, my first impression being something like “WOA…this shit is beautiful.” It’s beautiful because there’s some sort of ingrained, cultural thing that they have over there that we just don’t have. A shame, but a direct result of high capitalism. Probably. I don’t know…I’m drunk, back from sitting in the snow in foxboro watching the patriots suck. Nice Kermit hat by the way. Yours truly, -L’Idiot
LOL- My Kermit hat is pretty popular in my neck of the woods! I feel sorry for those who will be at the Chiefs game Saturday night. The temp will hover around zero. I hope to travel to Europe someday but Japan comes up more frequently. I understand Japan in rich in culture too. It's always good to hear from you!
@@smokyhillbonsai-gerrettmor6373 oh yeah I'm sure Japan is even more meticulously groomed. That would be incredible to see. And for what it's worth...go kermit.
A lot of people probably don’t think about things like this as they’re driving by, but good healthy shade trees in public spaces and parking lots benefit the whole community! Thanks for raising awareness!
We do seem to lose sight of the environment around us especially when doing routine tasks like going to the grocery or the home improvement store. There is a term coined for when we lose sight of plants: Plant Blindness. Thanks for your viewing support and comment.
Lookin our for us string trimmers! And great spotlight on an issue that could be avoided, but is happening everywhere.
It’s good to have knowledgeable and experienced landscapers like you out there protecting trees!
Great video Gerrett! Ashley and I miss you tons, and are planning on seeing you in may😁😁🤞
I’m looking forward to it brother! We’re all looking forward to seeing you two! Thanks for your viewing support!
I just picked the seeds from my neighbors tree. I am going to go through the stratification process and hope to propagate them in the greenhouse. Just love the look of this tree.
Great! I am collecting seeds now in hopes of a good crop in the spring. Please let me know how your seedlings progress! Thanks for your viewing support!
Good luck. Get lots of seeds. I have grown them 2 years and only get about 20% germination
Nice update, brought all mine inside 2 weeks ago. All tucked up under my grow lights😊
I don't own any ficuses but they seem resilient from what i understand. And under your care, I'm sure these dudes will thrive. Also fuck that cat.
Ya that damn cat! I enjoy the ficus because they give me something with leaves to look at in the dark depths of winter. You should try to sprout a lemon from seed. I picked up an organic lemon from the store and had pretty good luck. My daughter enjoyed the process- mostly because she got to eat the lemon. Good to hear from you!
Hi Gerrett, the temperature is starting to drop here in the UK. We've had a few unseasonably cold days with nighttime temps of 2 C / 35 F but it's warming up again now for the next 14 days or so. It'll get much colder than that in the winter but for early autumn/ fall, we've had a bit of a shock. I have a few tropicals and they are in a small grow tent in my garage now. I don't do much with them but they seem to survive each year so that's a bonus haha. Take care and good luck with your winter.
I hate it when the temperature looks like a roller-coaster. I wish we could get nice long seasonal transitions. Winter is not my favorite! LOL Thanks for your viewing support and I hope your winter is an easy one for you!
Nice!!! I dont have any milkweed in my yard yet but we planted everything we needed to raise black swallowtails and got TONS of them. Really fun.
23 Septiembre 2023
Good job Gerrett!
Thanks Chris! I was good to see you again! I'm already looking forward to next year!
What a cool event / road trip! Thank you for sharing Gerrett. I hope your trees are doing ok after your previous video. Has it cooled down?
It was awesome! It's a little more bearable here but still lacking rain. My family did an outstanding keeping the trees watered! Tanks for your support!
You were scared 😅😅 St. Louis Zoo .. Elephants and bamboo forest… looks like a great trip with some good people.. thanks for sharing.
It was wonderful and we had three representatives from the St. Louis Zoo at the conference! All outstanding people. LOL- the zip line was fun but I did feel like I'd slip out of the chair! I totally do it again!
Favorite zoo Rolling Hills prejudice of course. Memory tree lane Next favorite Colorado springs 😊 baboon
Good choice!
Great video! Love supporting zoos!! Each one is always so unique thanks to the landscaping! Keep it up.
It was a pleasure to meet you, Rose. I'm already looking forward to next years conference! Thanks for your viewing support!
You make great content. Im gonna tell all my friends about this wonderful video.
You're the man!
Hell yeah. A. tuberosa is such a solid plant. So well behaved compared to other milkweeds and tough as nails. Seems to thrive on neglect. And the flowers are such a nice pop of color in early summer. One of my favorite perennials, and seems to be favored by monarchs over other milkweeds
I love this plant, as a matter of fact I was out today collecting seed pods. Thanks for you viewing support!
Jesus...i hate to say it but we've had one of the most beautiful summers I've ever experienced here over in the northeast. Not as intensely hot, and TONS of rain (almost a complete turnaround). Hang in there, hopefully it all turns and you get a nice fall. There's always next year. ...also FUCK yellowjackets.
Up until about a month ago we were looking pretty good too! I hope this crap fades away before it gets to you! My wife thinks she could make a comedy video of my antics trying to kill the damn yellowjackets. I know she is right. As always thanks for you support!
@@smokyhillbonsai-gerrettmor6373 dude no joke…just saw a nest in a wood pile in the backyard. Time to go to battle.
Good luck! Fight well!
@@smokyhillbonsai-gerrettmor6373 I just saw a video where a guy used dawn dish soap. may try that...
You guys are really getting hammered by the heat over there eh?! I believe we've had one of the wettest summers on record here in the UK. Great video and update mate.
Thanks for your support! It has been a rough month or so for us in the central part of the country. The rest of the country seems to be dealing with the heat more long term that we have. Looks like a break in the weather next week! I would love a long wet summer. Our ponds and reservoirs need a good drink! Thanks for watching!
I’ve never found you so relatable! 😂
I do my best!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
