Week 5 | Appalachian Trail Thru Hike 2023 NOBO
I sleep in a hammock full time... I just set the stand up in my room instead of a bed lol. I got that because I loved my camping hammock so much lol. I have an extra step in my process that only adds a tiny bit of weight. I have a separate tarp/tarp-line with its own separate snakeskins, so I can set that up first/take it down last, and then set up the treestraps and hammock under that line. It keeps the tarp from touching any part of the hammock so it can't even get condensation on it. With your attachment setup, you might not need this, but a good tip is to roll a bit of tape around the hammock line just outside the hammock with the tape holding a small length of string from the very center. This should be done at each end of the hammock... the tape will help to stop water from rolling down the line and the bit of string hanging down will provide a path for the water to drip, safely away from the hammock. I'm going to be upgrading my tarp line in the future to something a bit stronger (so, unfortunately, a bit heavier) to be able to also hang my bag from that under the tarp, and that line will also be able to double as a clothesline when the rain stops if any of my stuff got soaked lol. There are some things I won't compromise on for the sake of weight, my shelter/sleep system and decent clothing/footwear are the main ones.
Cool
did you buy the hammock and tarp together?
Well UA-cam tells me this video is a year or more longer, so here I am and only know you from the previous video where you were dehydrated and preparing meals for the trail. So easy for people to say, Oh brother..... Another sob story after doing such an awesome thing. How on Earth are you not on cloud nine after that? I'll probably check out some of your hike but just some as right now I am fully involved with Rissa Roams, someone you could probably really relate to. Great that you are talking about it, and I'm sitting here talking as if it is in the present. I've dealt with depression many times for many reasons. So can relate some what. Take care of yourself and if you get into a mood for a AT THRU HIKE vlog check out Miss Rissa roams. PS loved your dehydrating video. Best wishes!
I definitely have a moment of panic when someone walks up I’m glad you said that . Thought it was just me 🙃😃
Great video Thank you I’ll be vlogging My AT thru hike 2025 🥾
Great Video. I like to see videos that are not total UL focused but you should shave more in RL nothing creepier than a hairy lady that doesn't need to be. YUK.
Been awhile since your last video, i hope all is well. Happy thanksgiving to you and your family. You're my favorite YT, I hope, more content for the future.
Please don't eat out of freezer bags!!!! You are eating micro plastic!!!!! Buy reusable silicone bags if you want to do this.
Thanks for sharing. I really appreciate the honesty & reality of vlogging a thru-hike.
OMS How cute are you , Thank you for sharing. xoxoxoxo
Would love to see you vlog about your homestead when that day comes
Thank you for the income tax tip, didn’t even cross my mind 😂
I’m kind of watching your videos out of order lol, I watched your entire hike and went back to this one..just curious, did your partner complete the trail? We are planning a 2026 thru hike and soaking up everything we can ahead of time, your videos and information are great, thank you for that!
I put mine in ziplock bags then put them in vacuum seal bags for extra protection
Awesome video
Yay you.
How many serves do you get from each recipe Really impressed with all of your meals Learnig so much
Just wanted to comment, not sure if you'll see this. I'm a year late, lol. I enjoy watching the vlogs of AT hikers, some I stick with, some....eh.....not so much. I have to say, your series I'm definitely watching till the end! I admire your dialogue, always interesting, bits of nature, bits of history and your genuine feelings and emotions, no drama, just real emotion, happy or otherwise! Looking forward to bingeing through the rest of your posts to the end. Just a little fun fact I live just 3 miles from the AT in PA, Pine Grove Furnace State Park, the halfway point. As it's a year and a bit past your hike, I hope you are doing well in life. Best wishes to you and thank you for the time and effort you invested in posting to UA-cam!
Thanks. This could be helpful. I’ve been shakedown hammock testing as much as I can this year preparing for a through hike next year. I’m having a tough time deciding. I’ve always used a tent, but the best sleep I’ve ever gotten was in a hammock. I need to decide if i spend no money and stick with my <3 lbs pseudo bivy, $400 on the tent i want or $100-$300 on upgrading my hammock stuff. So tough
im sure you have finished your thru hike by the time you see this message but for any future hikes a suggestion that i learned while homeless for a while about carrying water and keeping it with you in your bag is to carry a small piece of slastic grocery bag and slip it between bottle opening and cap of the bottle to keep it sealed
I know I am way late on this, I hope your trip went well. I am more of a bushcrafter; if you ever run into a situation where you have to cowboy camp, there are many ways to set your tarp up to camp without trees and be out of the weather. All you need is your trekking poles and some tent stakes which can be made on the trail out of branches or small sticks. There are many YT videos on different set ups. Hope this helps, cheers
Glad to have found your channel! Looking forward to watching your weekly updates from your hike when I'm working.
2:24 There yah go...
(4:55) "Places that [you] know are particularly expensive" ?? Now I'm curious about this, to learn more about what you mean by places being "expensive" as compared to other places
Thumb holes for the win!! (11:16)
Oh man, thanks for going into which APPS you've got for constellations, AIRPLANES, mountain peaks, bird identification, etc!! (8:00) I will find those ideas really valuable when I (hopefully) hike!!
Glad I found you from after listening to Kyle's "Trail Tales" podcast you were on! Thanks for all this info and knowledge!
I love hammock setups! It's been a year, have you upgraded to an underquilt and replaced your tarp yet? I just purchased the 12' sil-poly Journey and Quest from Hammock Gear. I specifically ordered then with middle anchor points on both sides for a single pole porch mode. It works fantastic! Sil-poly may not be as light as Dyneema, but its much less expensive. I paid around 100 for each and at 17oz and 13oz, they are light enough. I enjoyed your video!
so just a small suggestion with your booties, if you have extra lengths of shoelace laying around make a couple slip knot loops and use those to tether them closed for added insulation
I have afew different hammock set-ups. One of them happens to be the ENO JungleNest with the Helios straps. The tarp I use is the ENO ProFly XL SIL... Packs small and lite, about the same size as the JungleNest hammock when it is in it's stuff sack. HUGE real-estate space below.
Try a light down quilt and you will never change to a mat in the hamock.
Great gear run down. I’m a writer so I must point out that your repeated use of “concise” is incorrect. “Brief but comprehensive” is not a good descriptor for your pack, your stove’s packability, etc. “Compact” may be the word you’re trying for.
Hey, Girl! I know you finished. Congrats! I’m doing some planning for next year. When did you start?
You are an incredible combination of both gentleness and strength. What a great person you are!
I’m sure someone has already mentioned this but you don’t have to peel the apples if you don’t want to. The peeling blade can be disengaged. I like to leave the peels on when I dehydrate my slices. And a sprinkle of cinnamon is a variation
Followed your journey! Glad you are doing ᵇᵉᵗᵗᵉʳ. You are such a talented storyteller and I hope you continue.
Use a paper towel to wipe avocado oil on your paper before putting your stuff down on the trays to keep from sticking
I stumbled across your channel through some hammock searches and have watched a few more, this one particular to see your reaction to the triple crown. I lived in Roanoke for several years and have day hiked and section hiked that area a bunch. your videos are well put together and easy to watch and I'm looking forward to week 10 as that should take you through several more milestones I'm familiar with.
Am I the only one who thinks trail names are totally conformist and infantile? Like kids building a fort giving themselves special names to enter.

Bears in the woods, call 911. Smh.
The fake mania in the thumbnail is bizarre
I am planning to take a bear canister in 2025 for the same reasons! I don’t want to mess with hanging a bear bag and I HATE sitting on the ground (I need just a little bit of lift). I just came across your videos and they are so reassuring. My projected base weight is similar and I’m also making use of a lot of gear I already have so this is really validating my choices. Thank you!
Interesting opinions 😂 on here for sure in the comments but whatever works for you is what works don't worry about anyone else, that said I personally set up my eno profly on a slight angle myself to shed rain better and tie some 550 cord for drip lines ,but i always put the fly up first so ya have a dry place to set everything up . My setup is the helio straps from eno makes for quick lite set up, the eno skylite flat lay hammock, eno underquilt, and vesta topquilt . But hey whatever works for you. You are ever in Pennsylvania look up my club we hike the Appalachian trail a lot ,and your always welcome to join us, we can show you some tricks . ✌️ ☮️
would have been nice if you actually demostrated it 😊 cheers
Hi, I met your sweet dog and wonderful BF today at MR dog park, and S. referenced me to your videos! I had actually been wondering how VLOGS were made, and voila! Here it is! Looking forward to exploring all you've posted. Best to you guys! Carol from AK :)
That's a pretty sweet setup :) Learning to hammock camp and finding what works for YOU is a big part of the process. Enjoy.
