Watched on the strength of this and I liked a lot of the action but it dragged a little (maybe from me being at home and a little distracted rather than the cinema) great chat fellas!
OMG Coda was so bad I couldn't finish it. I was furious when it won! Regarding King's Speech, I liked it well enough. I remembered loving the soundtrack and listening to it again years later and it did nothing for me , haven't seen the movie since though.
Honestly from my POV there’s worse movies but it probably deserves it 😂 Great video chaps.
😆
This is an old people's movie that was voted for by old people
😆 You've got a point about AMPAS' average voting age. 🤔 I'd also add rich and white. That said, does that critique explain why it was such a big hit? And while it's a historical biopic, I'm not sure that makes it an "old people" movie. Mind elaborating?
Wow wonderful video. All the videos on your channel are fantastic. But your video views are lower. Because your optimization is very poor. Your optimization needs to improve as soon as possible.,.,........................
Hmm, the "forgetting" of an Oscar-level movie is an intriguing idea for discussion. A few points. First, is this really so surprising, especially in our current world in which stories set in historical periods and power structures that don't resemble our own make movies less appealing to "modern audiences". I'm not overwhelmed with conversations about Chariots of Fire (which I saw in London and loved before it was known) or Shakespeare in Love. But I also think "star power" - both in performers and directors - plays a major factor in keeping movies "remembered". Firth is a credible "star" but he's not in the league of Michael Caine or even Bob Hoskins (or that Obi Wan guy) in terms of iconic UK stardom. Spending hours on youtube I note that most "older movie discussion" usually drifts to movies with "auteur" directors (Kubrick, Hitchcock, Lean, Ridley Scott) or a very select group of actors. And overall, as the Oscars are far less relevant than they were in the past, is this a surprise at all? I'd argue that the last Best Picture winner that has "stood the test of time" in terms of ongoing discussion is No Country For Old Men from 2007 due to the popularity of the Coens, its genre, and its iconic villain.
Great points, Walt! Jim also talked about what I'll call the 'Auteur Effect' when we discussed why we remember films at all ( ua-cam.com/users/livevgU55p_BXJw?si=Y2z3HVGe02wbELm8&t=1945 ). Regarding how star power affects a film's place in our cultural memory 🤔 I'll have to noodle on that for a bit. Regarding the Oscars relevance, I argue no Oscar winner is, or was ever, remembered because they won an Oscar. A flick is remembered for other things, and the Oscar is only a very loose predictor of future impact.
@@RobKristjansson A fun discussion. Of course after the initial wave of noteriety subsides Oscars themselves don't cause movies to be memorable except for film nerds who'll want to see "what won Best Picture in 1965"? Flipping that on its head, it is even more fun to look back at the Academy's choices and dive into "why the heck did that one win?!?" - anything from the serviceable but not exceptional Greatest Show on Earth (which your stream mentioned) to Goodfellas losing to Dances With Wolves (finally giving Marty the win for The Departed was a blatant "make up call). When it comes to the impact of star power and cultural memory, there is an inevitable "chicken and egg" aspect to the point. Savvy stars generally are attracted to top-flight productions with good directors, so those movies SHOULD be good, and adding "star power" simply enhances that. Also, stars can lift the "reputational longevity" of otherwise "middling" films. I'm think of the original version of Get Carter, which follows an unsympathetic hitman viciously getting revenge in Northern England. The fact that Carter was "surprisingly" played by Michael Caine made the project much more bankable and today it is considered an influential genre classic.
LOVE this new video type on your channel!

@shashankvchari900 In answer to your question (two weeks later), my favourite James Cameron movies are Aliens and Terminator 2, strangely both sequels.
I admire Dev Patel’s passion behind the camera and emotionally charged performance in front of the camera. The action was fun at times but a little shaky and choppy more often than I would’ve wanted. The movie also dragged a lot for me in the middle. I liked it and enjoyed my time, but I think it is being a little overhyped. Thats just me though. Great review!
Thanks, Zach. We'll need to get you on the livestream when we do the deep dive on this flick!
The cops are on to us! (Evidence of a policeman in a doughnut store (!) starts at about 3:56.)
my experience shows that when you have high expectations or have been following a lot of hype about a movie it very often leads to a slight (or massive!) letdown, compared to "seeing a movie cold" - so the fact it surpassed Rob's "great expectations" is extremely high praise indeed
Movie is awesome!!!!
Walt, I think what put it into the win column for me was the unexpected depth. I wasn't expecting an analysis, but there was one there, waiting for me 🙂
Yes it is, but one has to acknowledge it only does so because it is also the perfect sequel. It wouldn't exist without 1979 Alien, but Cameron was able to extend and expand the world, the lore, the characters pretty much flawlessly, and most importantly, respecting the material he was building upon. He didn't go for the "i can make a better survival horror movie than Alien", he watched it and thought "yup that's perfect, i'll go FORWARD with this, keep the basic rules, and turn it into an action movie." He had the balls to do it, but stayed humble enough to avoid retcons and keep the continuity. Something Ridley Scott even later failed to do.
Yes, Jim here. In retrospect, I should have said more about it's "sequelness." It nicely builds on some of the aspects of Alien in a fairly significant way. The best example is how Ripley initially doesn't trust Bishop in Aliens, after her experience with Ash in Alien, but gradually learns to trust the android.
Yes.
I am talking about the Directors cut version, I’m not sure if that’s obvious at this point or not. Without the Directors cut version the reason for Ripley to go back for the child makes little to no sense.
Yes, it is 😀
Here's the link to a fan remastered version of the original trailer of this outstanding flick - ua-cam.com/video/bTCaVjQ8nU4/v-deo.htmlsi=GLE3xo-rMjeb1Qee
Yep, utterly perfect. Sadly followed by Alien 3, worst sequel of all time (4 rescues the series to a large degree).
It the best movie i know, its So good it appears fresh after 200 viewings. I still discover cool Details, like when the Torch Cuts through the grate and the camera gets closer to the Molten metal and hisses. Aliens is a Genre almost on its own, its the encapsulation of everything Alien.
Vietnam in space. Overconfident troops. The enemy hiding in all kinds of crevices. The enemy turning the environment against invaders. Communism disguised as extreme parasitism. Nuclear threat. Corruption at home.

You guys are literally answering your own questions when you walk yourself through the arguments. Where else would you go if you end the second movie on top? You end the third movie with the fall of Paul’s power and significance. You show the effects of the jihad and his genetic line, you question the entire thousand year old Bene Geserit program.

But your take on Dune...!
Woof 😂😂😂
I liked it
Thanks for commenting, Gerald! Why do you think it worked for you?
Well, call me a romantic but I quite enjoyed Past Lives and its theme of destiny versus choice. But it’s about more than that. To me, it’s about wanting, denying, sacrifice, and regret. The heart and the head. The pull that draws two people together again and again. The tightrope of emotional infidelity and not knowing who Nora would ultimately choose. I liked the pacing and appreciated the elegant storytelling. Especially refreshing was that all three characters restrained from saying or doing what they really wanted instead of just selfishly spewing or acting without thought of the consequences. Perhaps that’s just a nuance of the Canadian way.
Well said, Barb. I'll definitely bring your comment up with Jim on our next show (we're doing Anatomy of a Fall). Thanks!
Barb, Jim and I discussed your comment during our show last night! You'll find the chat here: ua-cam.com/users/live_NNPw4dcbkE?si=u3AM6p5nFTSaNSnf&t=120
I'm blanking out on what I said! I DID like the movie, more than Rob. Was worried at the start that it might be a little precious, but the movie won me over. Also, it's a great New York movie.
If you have the CC on, that train movie reference should be Silver Streak (not Street).
Oh!

Many thanks, Colin!
This is very much a dark comedy, from a Danish view. A very typical Danish dark comedy/action movie. Probably a lot is lost in translation, and because Danes and Americans are just different in mentality.
First of all, thanks for watching and commenting! Regarding our interpretation of this decidedly Danish flick, it's one of the reasons Jim and I love covering foreign-to-us films. We get a view into a different style and aesthetic. As for losing some of the nuances due to our different cultural backgrounds, that's something we are always sensitive to, and acknowledge as we dive deep into these kinds of films. And one more thing - while I appreciate you thinking we didn't get it because we're American, please note we're actually Canadian, and that while the difference is subtle, there is a difference. :-)
some great takes, guys. The issue I wonder about - increasingly as my favourite directors age - is how the "pressure" of being a revered filmmaker can impact the look and length of movies made toward the end of a career. Scorsese won his Best Picture for The Departed, but we all know his best film was Goodfellas (still the best true mob film ever made) - so how does the expectation of "greatness" affect how you shape your movies --- particularly when dealing with such a weighty true story as KOTFM -- and massive budgets you never had before - can't exactly go lean and mean, right?
Another great point, Walt - on the outside, no one is questioning his creative choices, and on the inside, there's the pressure to maintain your reputation as one of the great auteurs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@RobKristjansson exactly - almost without exception, a filmmakers' best creative period is usually (usually!) in the early-middle part of their careers - consider: Eyes Wide Shut, Family Plot, The Devil and Father Amorth, Passage to India, etc etc), Napoleon (if not his last, it should be)
I agree with you so much on this one Rob. The story deserved a different take. But still really liked this movie owing to the perfomances and the ending was a masterstroke.
Thanks, Shashank! And I totally see how you and Jim (and a boat load of Academy members!) can recommend this flick, even if I couldn't.
@@RobKristjansson Whats your favourite Martin Scorsese fim?
@shashankvchari900 Great question, Shashank. Hmm... I think Goodfellas is Scorsese at his best. But for me, it's a toss up between Hugo and Gangs of New York
@@RobKristjansson Fantastic picks. I remmeber watching Hugo in the theatre and was genuinely in awe of it. For me, it has to be Taxi Driver. Its a film that inspired me to become a film director,
@@shashankvchari900 what do you think it was about Taxi Driver that hooked you?

Fyi, we had a deeper conversation about this flick a few days later. Check it out on our video podcast, Jim and Rob Over-Analyze Movies! ua-cam.com/users/live2MAi5qolSS8
It's rated R so its not a family movie.
😆 we were trying to be funny. Apparently, weren't successful 😬
I thought the characters were the weakest part, I didn’t get invested in any of them, but as far as a sci-fi film plopped on Netflix goes it wasn’t too bad. Great review,Rob
That's a great point, Zach! For me, I wasn't expecting much in the way of character development, so I wasn't disappointed. That, and I found Boutella, Huisman, Hunnam, and Skrein fun to watch, when they weren't getting bogged down in blah blah blah, if you know what I mean :-D
thanks for your review, Rob. Sounds like if you are going to rip off Lucas and Kurosawa, that's okay as long as you do it well and give us dialogue and characters that punch the card (see Godzilla Minus One for a recent example or Fury Road's mining of John Ford). Instead this one sounds like a standard trope collection where "things blow up really good". Meanwhile, regardless if it developed as a movie or TV project, if it doesn't work then it doesn't work.
And Sturges! Honestly, I thought this was the flick everyone should be comparing Rebel Moon too, not Star Wars. The line of descent is Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven (1960), and this ramble. Star Wars is more like a distant cousin.
One bad sign is the three-part title; that never bodes well.
I’ve heard many people talk about the film having slow parts. I think they are mistaking quiet for slow. The quiet moments are used to develop characters and almost no time is wasted in this movie. I’ve seen it 5 times and took my Dad twice, he is older and during most movies he falls asleep a lot. He only nodded off once the second time for a few seconds during the whole film. Considering he originally didn’t want to go see it at all, that’s saying something.
EXACTLY, Jon!!! How can you have really big moments if you don't let us get comfortable with these characters, let us get to know them, get invested in them? Thanks for watching, and chiming in! Rob P.S. And I'm happy you got to share this with your dad!
@@RobKristjansson I’m a huge Godzilla fan (mostly of the Japanese films), been so since childhood. The hardest part of being a fan is that most people just don’t get it. They see goofy suits, fake cities and monsters fighting. Granted a lot of the films are like that (and they can be fun) but I don’t see him that way. To me the silly films are movies with Godzilla, but Minus One, Shin Godzilla, 1984, 1954, these are “Godzilla Movies”. This is the Godzilla I love. He is frightening and the film also has something meaningful to say. To finally have a film that, not only shows the character in his purest form but also to have it be loved by my whole family and most anyone that sees it has been an experience I will never forget.
Libertarian not rt wing
That's an excellent comment. As a matter of fact, I'm thinking there's a little something for everyone here. For example, I could characterize the community meeting as anarchist. Hmm... I'll definitely bring this up when Jim and I do a livestream deep dive on this flick!

When Steven Spielberg goes to see it THREE TIMES and calls it "the pinnacle of film making" then I'd say it must be at least a little good, right?
I don’t know about a sequel, especially since Anno’s take was a one go thing. That being said I absolutely expect more regular kaiju films out of Japan now.
Great point - I can certainly see Yamazaki saying to himself, "Maybe I leave this on a high, and let someone else take a crack at it..." That said, he did seem to tease the possibility himself here - www.sanspo.com/article/20231103-V3O6JB7ILBNS7FLHIXCOF5PRRE/
@@RobKristjansson I think Japanese cinema is really good at one takes. I’d love to see more domestic Japanese Godzilla content though. They need to take a crack at a crossover OR monster versus film now though.
🤔 another good point. Jim and I are going to do a deep dive on this flick, and this will definitely be one of the topics of discussion!
