Thanks, gentlemen. As a lifelong "movie nerd" myself I am drawn to the subject and, yes, the Fabelmans is a great example of that. I note it's rather amusing yet sad that one reviewer writes the film is wistfully nostalgic for the "brick and mortar" days of Blockbusters - compared to the nostalgia for the grand old cinema experience that we see (and I lived through) at the beginning of the Fabelmans.
It's also inevitable this headstrong young protagonist will insist that the world must embrace "true cinema" as he is not yet able to realize that you'll never convert the "average Joe" who just wants some mindless action or laughs and safe tropes leading to a tied-up ending.
The obsession with NYU film school faintly echoes The Freshman (largely shot in Toronto, of course) and speaks to the loftiness of his dreams. To illustrate, a neighbour's family member here has coincidentally been accepted at NYU's music school - to the tune of $80 grand (US) per year (sans little things like rent and food and books and transportation, etc, etc).
Anyway, I will be looking for this one.
Thanks, Walt. It is still on a bit of a post-festival art-house circuit, so I'm not sure when it'll be out. But it also reminds me that there are some Canadian films I need to catch up with.
@@jimboc7249 Hopefully Crave will grab it. I shudder at the current need to subscribe to 15 different streaming services to see 1 or 2 specific "anchor shows".
@@Vlad65WFPReviews at a q&a in Owen Sound, the director said that it would be streaming on Netflix in September of this year. :)
this gave me all that old 90s talkie INDIE vibe, like from Kevin Smith, Tarantino, Linklater, etc.
love it.
You're absolutely right - this flick WAS super 90s indie! Which is perfect, given it's time frame, eh? Thanks for pointing this out!
