Really nice breakdown. I saw this movie in 4dx like the day after it released, and holy hell, that was an experience. It's amazing what they were able to do with a (relatively) tiny budget for the movie, it looked better than some 200 million dollar flops.
I've finally convinced my friend to watch it, so I'm going to go see it again tomorrow night.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, there's so much to watch these days, and I'm a little behind on other movies myself. Otherwise, I'd think about going back. Again, glad to have seen it in the theater.
Thanks for the props, GPK! This is definitely the surprise of the season, eh? I certainly can't remember a time I've said "Seriously, you've GOT to see this Godzilla flick!" to anyone! 😆
Easy one: just see it. Amazing visual and audio pieces, a perfect case for something to see in a big-ass-screen with a big-ass-sound.
And one of the best movies of the year, if not the best.
"just see it." still makes me smile. Thanks, Gandralf!
How sad it’s got that this was by far the best film I’ve seen at the cinema this year! Enjoyed it a lot! Cocaine bear the second best! Ant Man, Transformers, even Guardians massive let downs this year!!
I'm with you on Ant-Man, Nicholas. That is an MCU character I've always had a soft spot for, so it was a bit of a bummer watching whatever the he!! Quantumania was on the big screen! That said, I thought GotG3 was another solid flick. (If maybe a little fat at times.) On Transformers, thanks for confirming my suspicions - I skipped that one!
I don’t know about a sequel, especially since Anno’s take was a one go thing. That being said I absolutely expect more regular kaiju films out of Japan now.
Great point - I can certainly see Yamazaki saying to himself, "Maybe I leave this on a high, and let someone else take a crack at it..." That said, he did seem to tease the possibility himself here - www.sanspo.com/article/20231103-V3O6JB7ILBNS7FLHIXCOF5PRRE/
@@RobKristjansson I think Japanese cinema is really good at one takes. I’d love to see more domestic Japanese Godzilla content though. They need to take a crack at a crossover OR monster versus film now though.
🤔 another good point. Jim and I are going to do a deep dive on this flick, and this will definitely be one of the topics of discussion!
Good review, especially endorsing the need to see this on as big a screen as possible, even though the "big guy" isn't on-screen that much. Jim is right saying it is more of a character-based story than some action fans might want - but that's why it gets such a massive buy-in from us. And I must say, I endured the trailer for the staggeringly more expensive Aquaman II while waiting for this feature and the much cheaper Godzilla will crush A II like a big lizard foot. Btw, my buddies assure me that the plane and warship featured in the movie did exist historically so the screenwriters did some nice digging. And lastly, excellent use of the brilliant theme of the 1954 original in some key finale scenes. GGGrrrrooooaaarrrr!!
I don't think any action fan wants just spectacle - every time they show up in the theatre, they are hoping, if only subconsciously, that there are characters they can experience the promised adventure through!
Is equally funny and sad that a Godzilla movie is more historically accurate than a supposed historical movie (I'm looking at you Napoleon).
Yeah, Napoleon was something, but historical, it was not.
@@RobKristjansson A small but perhaps telling detail about Ridley was when he decided it was a good idea to insert the war chants from Zulu into the soundscape of the attacking Barbarians in the beginning of Gladiator.
Love the Review, fellas!!! I haven't seen this one yet, but definitely need to put it on the list after seeing your review!!!
OMG! I can't believe we saw a movie before youse! It seems to be doing fairly well and anecdotally, it's one that seems to be bringing a lot of people I know to the theater.
Make it happen, DMG!
Great review!!! Glad you love this film. Gojira arigato!
Many thanks! 😊😊😊
I’ve heard many people talk about the film having slow parts. I think they are mistaking quiet for slow. The quiet moments are used to develop characters and almost no time is wasted in this movie.
I’ve seen it 5 times and took my Dad twice, he is older and during most movies he falls asleep a lot. He only nodded off once the second time for a few seconds during the whole film. Considering he originally didn’t want to go see it at all, that’s saying something.
EXACTLY, Jon!!! How can you have really big moments if you don't let us get comfortable with these characters, let us get to know them, get invested in them? Thanks for watching, and chiming in!
Rob
P.S. And I'm happy you got to share this with your dad!
@@RobKristjansson I’m a huge Godzilla fan (mostly of the Japanese films), been so since childhood. The hardest part of being a fan is that most people just don’t get it. They see goofy suits, fake cities and monsters fighting. Granted a lot of the films are like that (and they can be fun) but I don’t see him that way. To me the silly films are movies with Godzilla, but Minus One, Shin Godzilla, 1984, 1954, these are “Godzilla Movies”. This is the Godzilla I love. He is frightening and the film also has something meaningful to say. To finally have a film that, not only shows the character in his purest form but also to have it be loved by my whole family and most anyone that sees it has been an experience I will never forget.
See it 100 times!!!
💯x💯
See it, for sure
Yeah, this is an easy, if surprising, recommend to most folks, eh?
Libertarian not rt wing
That's an excellent comment. As a matter of fact, I'm thinking there's a little something for everyone here. For example, I could characterize the community meeting as anarchist. Hmm... I'll definitely bring this up when Jim and I do a livestream deep dive on this flick!
がんばてよ
Skip it. It's boring.
It's too bad you didn't enjoy it
You’re boring
Horrible movie! Can’t believe people enjoyed it? People don’t expect much anymore 😢
Huh. Thanks for watching?
@@user-ul6gb1uo7e lol They're definitely a sh*t-poster. Thank YOU for the support!
@@RobKristjansson 💩💩💩knows 💩💩💩for sure! 👍
Youre full of shit or stupid
When Steven Spielberg goes to see it THREE TIMES and calls it "the pinnacle of film making" then I'd say it must be at least a little good, right?
