I Built a Paludarium for my Rainbow Boa, What Happened?
A lot has happened in this ecosystem since it was build for my Rainbow Boa over a year ago! From Leaks and water troubles to plant successes and failures, I definitely learned a lot and wanted to share my findings. Fine tuning an ecosystem can have it's challenges, but once everything gets dialed in, these vivariums can basically be on autopilot with minimal maintenance.
I know I've been gone for a while now, and I've been tinkering away at this video since I last posted over a year and a half ago so this one is a long one in the making. I can't promise every video will be this over top, but hopefully this one was worth the wait!

@@clueras I wasn’t, but I’d love to visit
Peru / Brazilian Amazon Rainbow Boa ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Grabbing mine next Thursday!!!
💚
Vicarious = Epic
how do you take your snake out and handle it when there's so much plants and objects in the way
@@jerrypotter1136 usually I just find her under her hide box and grab her, but otherwise she’ll be in the open for most cases
What are the glasses you are wearing in this?
Liked and subbed.
@@hremaddox 👊👊👊
I also have a bioactive home for my new Brazilian rainbow boa, and the umbrella plant also didn't do well in it. It started turning purple leaflet by leaflet so I removed it. The dragon's tongue also died, and my juanita fittonia is doing too hot--even though it seems like it might recover now in a different spot, I'll probably replace it with a calathea. My arrowhead plant is doing the best, and I'll be adding some pothos to the back soon. The bromeliad is dying back, but probably only because it has a pup now. And my peperomia is doing good too. My rainbow boa is a baby, so I thought maybe I just had humidity that was a bit too high for some of the plants. Thank you for these awesome findings, this really helps narrow down possible plants for the future!
such good production quality. Keep consistency and you’ll get big, my advice is change style of the title of your vid/s aswell as thumbnail
@@ThatClipsmith thanks! And yeah packaging is always so tricky 😵
Nice work Travis! Wicked build and your editing is awesome. Beautiful snake too.
@@taylormackenzie8344 thank you!
I'd probably just buy a fish tank for a rainbow boa. No need to worry about leaking then.
Why use that shtty music
Do you build for people or only for yourself
Both!
What an impressive video! Respect for all the hard work you put in.
That’s a beautiful enclosure and some really great tips!!!
I'm actually more interested in that pair of glasses you had on in the beginning... lol.. what is it?
How do you keep the water clean??? Do you habe to change it? Do you have isopods specifically for water?
@@AlbertoMartinez-ig7zu so it’s got a filtering system in there. I’ll spot siphon any messes out as needed, but otherwise I’ll just clean out the filter every so often (the moss and plants help remove any nitrates as well)
Your editing is like SSS-tier, amazing stuff! Thanks for sharing the journey of this tank with us. It was great seeing the umbrella plant getting a new home for better light, good luck to it! And I love the orange isopods. <3
What are the glasses
I got my hands on the Meta Vision Pro’s 🤫 😉
super cute editing, i love it! i look forward to your videos x
dang if only he didn’t upload yearly 😭
@@jaidyn.m I feel the same way 😫 I would love to be able to do this full time and upload once or twice a month at least
those edits are amazing, keep it up! :)
Couple tips/ideas for you: the whole weight of the lights and stuff pushing down the frame on the doors, perhaps you can design/build some sort of tree trunk in the center of the enclosure used to hold/support the lid/frame from bowing down onto the glass doors. Your way of getting rid of the excess water from the drainage layer: why not just drill a hole and set up a bulkhead with an on/off water valve? Thats what im currently using on my dart tanks with a half inch hose and all the water drains out within seconds Also (im sure you have much deeper pockets than me) But! you can actually save hundreds of dollars if you just buy your plants at big box stores like home depot/rona/etc...for example the local reptile expo/pet store sells a small pot of baby tears like the one you had for $9, home depot had them for $2 in the summertime. The drainage leca balls, im sure you paid between $20-$40/bag for the brand name, but your local hydroponics store would sell the same stuff where you can get like 4bags worth for less than $40, coco coir/bio active mix can be made for super cheap too
the solution for the tube sucking is filling the whole tube with water first and then let the water go out. As long as the the end your holding is lower to the ground than the other end, all the water should come out.
might not work in this case since the tube is stuck to the other side, but you can always give it a try
Nice setup. Keep going
You deserve a hell of a lot of subscribers... oh man the editing is just on point. I have a lot to learn from you
How do you clean up from urine and feces?
@@davidschmutz3804 the plants, isopods, springtails honestly take care of most of it. I just have to occasionally spot clean
@@JustTravis_trj that makes sense. I was at pet supermarket looking for a redtail the other day and they had a Brazilian rainbow boa. It’s beauty just kinda grabbed me so now that’s what I’ve been looking at. Searching for more info on how to keep one.
@@davidschmutz3804 nice! And yeah, lots of humidity (especially important when young) not as high of temperatures, and they are beautiful but hide often so not particularly display snakes. Great temperament, great feeding response. Maybe I should make a video specifically about them 🤔
@@JustTravis_trj thank you. That would be appreciated.
This was amazing! But watching you take that wirebrush to the foam without wearing a respirator gave me anxiety. Please protect your lungs!
Have you had any issues with the great stuff foam not sticking or coming off? I plan on securing egg crate to the back of my pvc enclosure to spray the foam onto to hold on better. Also, how many coats of drylock did you use on the background?
It sticks to most surfaces, but not all. I would think you should be fine, and maybe 2 coats
Purchase a pump like Hydros Sole that will drain the water for you
I’ll look in to it!

Very surprised that the fish are doing as well as they are with such an odd combination. Typically tiger barbs are more aggressive in small numbers, but they look good in your case!
I do want to build a dedicated planted aquarium and I’ll probably move them to that at that point
@@JustTravis_trjIf I could make a suggestion for the fish that does stay in the Paludarium, look into splash tetras. They lay their eggs above water and it’s quite entertaining when they do.
Love it. Cant wait for a future update but take ur time. Its so inspiring! :D Its refreshing to see Videos that show a larger Timespan of projects and the development. (The trauma of all these "Follow for part 2" Videos hits)
Great video! As a fish keeper though I would like to mention that some of the schooling fish you have would much prefer more of their own species. Tiger barbs usually like to be in schools more than 3 and I only saw one lonely rummynose which probably makes him super insecure since they love to school super tight. Regardless, looks amazing and keep it up! Edit: I later did see more rummys and I also wanted to mention the min usually for schooling gosh is 6, but if they seem happy and healthy, you could get away with less
@@ethanvaughan9657 thanks for sharing! I’m definitely learning a lot in the realm of fish keeping; I would like to do a big planted tank soon 🤞
@@JustTravis_trj Hey, we all start somewhere and one of the best parts about keeping animals is you can learn something new everyday! It would be exciting to see you do a planted tank and I’m sure it would look so good judging by how the paludarium looked. Goodluck!
