I just purchased the Schminke set of 24, and this comparison really made me happy that I chose that brand ❤

Hi everyone! The W&N Lemon Yellow PY53 might be useful for a desert landscape. Despite being pale, PY53 is somewhat strong for the brownish-yellows of deserts, but its murkiness and softness are reminiscent of the ‘feel’ of desert yellows.

Here’s the problem I see with swatch comparisons: a swatch isn’t a painting and painting is the point of having a set of watercolours. I have sets of both Sennelier and Schminke, as well as a few others. I bought the Sennelier set first, had some issues with the choice of palette, so when I saw a special edition (‘historical’) set of Schminkes on sale, I jumped for it. I thought I preferred the Schminkes. At one point, though, I started not only dating the paintings in my sketchbook, but lightly pencilling in what media I’d used. Recently, I went back through some old sketchbooks, pausing at every painting I liked (not too many of those!) When I peered at the annotations, I was stunned to discover that every single painting I thought had come out well was painted with the Senneliers. This doesn’t mean they’re better paints. It just means they seem to bring out the best of my modest talents. Swatches don’t matter. What matters is what you paint.

To be fair in comparison, one must take note of the transparency indicated on the tube of each of these colors. Here they are: DANIEL SMITH Bismuth Vanadate Yellow : semi transparent Cadmium Yellow Light Hue : semi transparent Perylene Scarlet ; semi transparent Rhodonite Genuine ; transparent Ultramarine Blue : transparent Yellow Ochre : transparent Burnt Sienna : semi transparent SCHMINCKE Lemon Yellow : semi transparent Cadmium Yellow Light ; semi opaque Cadmium Red Light : opaque Permanent Carmine : semi opaque Ultramarine Finest : semi transparent Yellow Ochre ; semi opaque English Venetian Red : opaque As we can see most colors by Daniel Smith are listed as transparent or semi transparent while most Schmincke Colors are listed as semi opaque or opaque. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these Colors ; we simply cannot compare them on this basic. Transparency is also not necessarily a sign of quality per se. Schmincke indeed also offer transparent ochre, transparent sienna and transparent umber (which are all transparent alternatives to yellow ochre, burnt sienna and burnt umber). Honestly, these two brands are both of very high quality. Maybe Schmincke is indeed more traditional (founded in Germany 1881) while Daniel Smith is more « in vogue » (founded in USA 1976). I would add, as a last thought, that the great Joseph Zbukvic - maybe one of the most influential watercolorist living today - uses Schmincke Horadam watercolours.

I LOVE Holbein. I have a set of Schmincke and love them, but I’ve always preferred Holbein for their vibrancy and opacity. When I do realistic portraits I use Sennelier and Schmincke but I do a lot of character/manga style work and Holbein is just number one for that. They’re incredible. They have so many beautiful convenience colors that I don’t have to mix my own colors very often, as they’ve never made my favorite mixes. Schmincke are more clear and mix better but Holbein if used at full strength and not mixed are just unbeatable in my eyes. But everyone’s style and preferences are different and we all have our needs. I’ve always preferred Asian style watercolors.

If you rewatch your video, why does it feel like you put a very pigmented schmincke but a very watered down daniel smith?

Would love people's thoughts as to what palette I should get - I am a newer artist and enthusiast and would like a ready made palette I can grow into. Which do you recommend- I am thinking of the professional winsor newton or the professional daniel smith???

You have the wrong Scmincke colours. They do have a transparent alternative for each of the colours you thought were opaque. There’s use for both

Winsor & Newton is damium - free in the proffessional set (it says in the product description when I wanted to buy one). This is a huge plus for me, compared to Schminkey that has cadmium in their colors, and it is not healthy for human doby. That is the number one reason why I would choose Winsor over Schminckey.

At home & for say a serious landscape, Rembrandt is my go to as it glazes beautifully and the colors are the most natural. The actual colors of nature. Also, Rembrandt offers more control than other paints ... it goes where you want. Some like that aspect, some don't. Daniel Smith, I find myself using the Primateks the most, I really enjoy them.

Rembrandt is the most underrated brand. Their series 100 Kolinsky brushes,paint better than most Kolinsky and feel great! They are as good if not better value,than their Van Gogh line!

I like them both but actually prefer Sennelier. There’s no need to pre wet Sennelier (Similar to M Graham, they’re honey based). Cautious in pre wetting Schmincke too … paint will jump on your brush, far more than you realize. It’s not more pigmented, there’s a lot of paint on the brush. 😊 The pans will run out of paint quite quick if you don’t pay attention or have the habit of “digging” in your paint. Thanks for the comparison. I like to mix and match the 2 in my palettes. They work great together.

Thank you for this video. I hope you have time to answer my question. In my technique I use multiple layers and when I apply the second coat the paint underneath starts to reactivate can you recommend some brands that allow me to paint in layers

Get the Sennelier 8 if a beginner . It’s inexpensive and Artist grade. I use both brands. Hansa Medium would have been better to compare to Lemon yellow. J/s Great comparisons!

Something I noticed when I started using Sennelier they mix incredibly well with even other brands of paint as well. I saw another video where the lightfastness was tested and there was no change in the paint. Really impressed with the vibrancy and the mixing ability. I’ll be buying more.

Tammy, I'm finding your comparison videos invaluable (including the one of your earliest novice videos in which you compare Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton (and lost some footage but posted any way). Last week I lost a beloved and much used set of Maimeriblu half pans that were a gift from my mother during a trip to Italy that she gave me for a graduation present. I do have other watercolors in tubes (WN), and use both the tubes and the pans, so I've been looking at pan set replacement options, and was at a loss as to what it would make sense purchase. Your videos are particularly helpful because I want to replace my lost box of pans with one I've not used before-- I'm trusting that my Maimeri box will show up and if it does, I want to have a box to travel with so I can keep the Maimeri at home. Also, if you've not yet done so and want to pursue some other comparisons, I would be interested to see some videos on different qualities of brushes and what they are good for. Thanks for sharing! I use DS, WN professional, and W&N Cotman. I mainly use DS, and it was very pricey building my set. I’ve been tempted to try the QOR 24 set, so I’ve been looking for swatch and comparison videos. Also, the perm alizarin crimson for QOR pr 177, Daniel smith also has a PR177 that is very similar called Anthraquinoid Red that I use instead of Alizarin Crimson. Also, the result of the last test was very interesting. I’ve heard it’s very easy to pick up a lot of QOR pigment, and during the swatch test it definitely looks like much more pigment is used than DS, creating an opaque effect. It looks like the same happened on the last test-the QOR look “more vibrant” bc much more pigment was used than the DS. If the same amount of pigment was used for the DS side, the DS would be just as vibrant.
