The abundance and variety of animal agriculture and companion animals in Michigan provides the College with one of the largest clinical and diagnostic caseloads in the country. Educational and research opportunities are considerably enhanced by this large caseload. The College also takes seriously its obligation to meet the needs of society in addition to clinical services and education. We have expertise in public health, biomedical and comparative medical research, ecosystem and environmental management, and the multiple facets that compose our complex global food system. The College also supports key animal health programs conducted by both the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the US Department of Agriculture.
Avian Influenza: Biosecurity
From our labs to our farms, keeping the environment safe from potential biological threats is always a top priority. Since the March 2024 outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in our commercial dairy cattle, the need for additional biosecurity has ramped up. Dr. Zelmar Rodriguez, an Assistant Professor of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, explains what biosecurity is and what we all can do to help mitigate the spread of HPAI through these practices.

@msuvets8968 Helo's dog-mom here! Thank you to the entire team at MSU Veterinary Medical Center. You truly saved Helo's life. He unfortunately lost his battle with cancer on December 23rd, however, because of your care, we were able to spend 104 more WONDERFUL days with him. I will be forever grateful for that extra time we received because of everything you did for him and for us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! ❤❤❤❤

I wish MSU wasn't so far of a drive. To bad MSU can't have smaller locations throughout the state of Michigan. I live in Adrian, mi. An hour and a half is a long drive for me. It would help the older generation with caring for their pets. Some can't make a drive that far.
