New Flock - Started Pullets Instead of Raising Chicks 🐔🐤
My new flock is doing great. This time. I decided to purchase started pullets from a local farmer instead of raising chicks.
If you have raised chicks before, then this may be a great option for you if wanting eggs sooner.
Thanks for watching and Happy Chicken Keeping 🐔

    If you need another project to increate the novelty of the hens you might try getting orange or red egg yolks. The feed is only pigmented for healthy-yellow yolks & my lawn must not have any orange or red so I may try a marigold garden or something to add the color. I probably just need to order some marigold extract & coat the feed with it.

    • @colesbackyardcoop
      @colesbackyardcoop 9 днів тому

      @@SlackerU I'm ok with yellow yolks. Dried Marigolds will definitely help deepen the color though. My next project will be adding a new separate coop 6 x 10 for a small flock of pure breed Ameraucanas that lay the beautiful blue eggs. I will receive those chicks in September. More to come on that.

    • @SlackerU
      @SlackerU 9 днів тому

      @@colesbackyardcoop I hope the blue-eggs works. My neighbor tried but none of them survived our Zone 9b heat. You might need a climate-controlled coop that also controls humidity so you can keep them closer to 84f.

    • @colesbackyardcoop
      @colesbackyardcoop 9 днів тому

      @SlackerU I will be careful with them. Your neighbor's situation sounds like there is more that caused them all to die besides heat. I've had pure breed Ameraucanas in FL before and never lost one to heat. Although chickens in general prefer temps above 40 and below 75. Hot temps in the 90s does add stress. I make sure to supply plenty of cool water and lots of shade. Plus dust bathing in cool dirt brings their body temps down too. A chicken core temp is 95.

    Got the roos sorted at that stage, and getting a few little eggs...Perfect! I have Prarie Bluebells, but I'm interested in your chicks as well. We are actually keeping only one. We have had indoor pet hens, even in a city setting. We had one who was welcomed into the local restaurants, as she got a reputation for being less trouble than people, and ordering full entrees. She was accustomed to "table manners" from birth, and was hand fed her bites if necessary. She informed me if she needed to be taken outside, which was very appreciated. She viewed museums, explored parks, went to art and music events...she LOVED music and would trill along with the musicians/singers. She stared at paintings a though she were having deep thoughts she did not care to share. She tried to buy a few but her taste was beyond my budget. LOL Her favorite dish, house fried rice with mixed meats. A red comet, she lived six years, but they were a FULL six years. I'm retired..I have the time, the space, and the cash, and I want a pet chicken again! I'm watching the combs/earlobes start to show on mine. They are americanaXleghorn. We have sparse tails, mostly tiny combs except for one who has a DEFINATE leghorn single comb that is turning red. We all know what that means. Everybody else has the americana/peacomb showing. Fingers crossed! Best of luck with your lovely, affectionate ladies! (our escape artist is Ashley. ) Thank you for sharing the your experience!

    I’m very surprised that you use straw for litter in your run, I was always under the impression that it can grow mold when it gets damp, plus it can harbor pests ? Have you ever considered sand as a litter? I use washed construction sand and love how easy it is to clean daily

    • @colesbackyardcoop
      @colesbackyardcoop 3 місяці тому

      Hello Joy. I use straw or hay in the run as it offers a great way to minimize excess messy poop. It stickys to the hay or straw and makes it so easy to clean up the poop patty. Plus hardly ever see dirty feet either. It does not get moldy as my run receives full sun part of the day which the UV light keeps my run nice and dry and free of any mold or bacteria. No lice or mites as I sprinkle DE in the run. Good for the chickens when they dust bathe too. Even when it rains hard, my run is dry within a day due to good drainage and sunlight. If a run is staying wet or damp continuously to the point of mold growth there is a bigger issue that needs to be addressed. I use high quality garden soil for my base. Keep in mind your chickens will eat the dirt and I prefer using rich soil they would find if they free ranged. Hope that answered your questions.

    Mine are four weeks; all " TS prarie bluebells" (Americana X Leghorn) Nearly no comb growth on any of them. They are getting used to behind handled, and coming, or freezing for "the hand". Only one who is deliberately evasive, and I suspect a roo. A few more weeks and I'll be rehoming three of them; keeping one for an ESA indoor chicken. Remainder gifted to a new production farm. (families with kids given preference) I am using indoor cloth foldable living quarters to make for easier cleanup. Easily washable baby blankets for bedding and regular daily outdoor foraging time. They have access to a patient dog who tolerates them and provides warmth on occasion. All different colors. Preference will be given to those who particularly appreciate the human contact.
