For those interested in who I am you can find below a short presentation.
My name is Daniel, I am an electronic engineer who started some time to work with wood. Wood was a passion of mine since my childhood when I grew up with my uncle who was a woodworker.
When I was about 35 I bought a CNC machine and made several things with it.
Working with wood I needed some cutting tools so I had to buy hand planes and chisels. They needed to be sharpened so I have discovered whetstones and I have another passion now: sharpening. I like sharpening and I discover how relaxing is to sharpen a kitchen knife. I am not a specialist, I am a self though from what I read and from other people's movies.
On my channel, you can find movies with what I do in my workshop: sharpening, some woodworking, repairing things, and whatever I have to do and I consider to be interesting for you.
I am sure that you don’t like all my movies. There is no problem, it is normal. :) If you would like to tell me your opinions please be civilized. :) But I hope that you like them at least 99.99%. :)
Thank you for watching and as I already told you in the movie please support me with a like, comment, share, subscribe, etc. Any of them are important to me.

    Thank you for this video. I was really wondering about the "angles" of the scissors when you sharpen. You didn't tell us anything about those. Do you sharpen at the same angle the bevel is on already? What angle do you sharpen the other end? I'm afraid I will lose the natural bevel and then have blunt scissors. I wish you could have shown us the angles and told us the purpose when you sharpen. I know you were trying to get the knicks out but besides that, what are we aiming for when sharpening? A sharp edge? Thank you.

    Hello Daniel, I always come back to your channel because it is one of my most important sources. Maybe you could help me. Until 1000 grid, I could feel burrs. But If I am on a 3000 stone, the edge is already so fine that I couldnt feel a burr anymore. Could you tell me what is the indicator for make the step from a 3000 to 5000, or maybe to an 8000 stone please? How do I know when I am ready on a fine stone to go to the next? Best wishes

    • @DanielWorkshop
      @DanielWorkshop 4 місяці тому

      In the beginning I had the same problem, but with time I learned how to feel it. It can be felt but is much finer. If you can't feel it you can try the marker trick. Or you can try to do only stropping motions about 30-50 on each side and you should be ok.

  • @Christopher_Giustolisi

    I have the 800 and 5000 as separate 10mm stones and i like them but they seem to be finer than advertised. The 800 almost gives you a polish. Maybe that is because they´re quite hard but the shapton kuromaku are even harder and tend to be a bit coarser than advertised, so I don´t think it´s the hardness. The 800 super stone is great for touching up a knife that isn´t quite sharp anymore but for a really dull knife I´d go to the 400 first. The 5000 gives a really nice polish. They could´ve written 10.000 on it and I would´ve believed it. Because they´re so thin I glued them to pieces of glass like the shapton glass stones. In hindsight I should´ve bought the 20mm thick ones since they cost only about 10 to 20€ more and you get twice as much stone.

    • @DanielWorkshop
      @DanielWorkshop 4 місяці тому

      The grit is not always an indication of the final result. The superstone are made with abrasive particles bonded together with some kind of resin. Shaptone kuromaku is made by baking abrasive particles at high temperatures. So kuromaku are only abrasive particles. That is the reason that they are more aggressive. :) The resin helps the superstone to give that superior finish.

  • @Christopher_Giustolisi
    @Christopher_Giustolisi 4 місяці тому

    Thanks for this informative video. The 220 is interesting but I won´t need the 1000 since I already have a 800 grit brick sized King stone which is very soft and creates a lot of slurry. I don´t mind that, but another one of those would be of little use.

    What's the best natural stones for a low/medium/high grit set for ~$150?

    • @DanielWorkshop
      @DanielWorkshop 4 місяці тому

      Natural stones are very different because they are natural. That is the reason why people prefer synthetic stones. They are the same and you know what to expect, more or less. With natural stones is a gamble.

    When you first start cleaning them instead of using the wire brush, put them in a pan with water covering them. Boil for about 45 mins keeping them covered with water. Then after they are cool take OOO or OOOO steel wool to remove the excess oxide from the shears. It will leave the steel blue and the excess oxide will buff off. I believe the final product is better.
