    i am from Scandinavia so a good thing for me is that i can go to Germany and try on boots Hanwag makes wide models but to be honest they are not really wide but they make something called a straight fit extra they are even wider than the wide models they dont make all models in straight fit extra but the Banks GTX come in straight fit extra. Lowa makes wide models to and they are some of the widest european boots .... if you are a person who have to wide feet for all of those (keen are not wide either) well US boot are generally wider than european ones the widest on the market being Kenetrek and they still have ok heels

      Sorry I don't have exact measurements handy and won't be popping the top open to check anytime soon. If I had to guess, probably somewhere in the ballpark of 10-12in tall by 14-18in wide. They aren't huge, but big enough to serve the purpose of letting you see what is going on out to the sides.

    You can seal off your tailgate with rubber gasket material on both sides and a tailgate seal that connects the tailgate with the bed so there are no gaps for dust or dirt to enter the box.

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild Місяць тому

      Right on! And for sure, big one being that the provided wire is just long enough to go from the driver's side front corner of the truck bed to the battery. Drilling through the plastic plug has worked out well, if I was to do that again I would put a little rubber gasket around the hole before running the cable, then use some form of silicon water proofing to fill the gap between the cable and the hole. To get the cable up to the engine bay follow the brake line most of the way since Toyota obviously put that in a safe spot. You can follow the line up through the driver wheel well into the engine bay!

    I am on my 2nd pair of Keen Durand 2s and I have to say that I never had any issues with waterproofing. I wore them every day at work for 8 months and all the way till the end, I could walk in water and not have wet feet. When I retired them, the soles were worn through the grey section of the sole. The reason I stopped wearing them was that one of the eyelets came off and the stitching was coming apart on the inside of the boot right by the ball of the foot.

      Glad to hear you had a better experience with them! This last set was probably purchased around 2021 and run hard into 2024. Maybe they have improved the liner? Or my specific use case wore the liner out earlier. Either way would love to go back to Keen someday, so I'll be tracking on reviews like yours.

    I bought the alternator charger with the delta 2 max and have had it installed for about a month. It has unfortunately let me down on every trip. The alternator charger disconnects from my phone and requires WiFi to reconnect. As soon as it disconnects from my phone it is basically useless as there is no way to turn it on. I have had to leave my camp in search of internet just to reset it. I have sent messages to Ecoflow and was told that it does in fact require internet and that I should use the personal hotspot on my phone… that doesn’t work when off grid. Sorry to leave such a harsh sounding comment on your video. My intention is to share my experience so people know what they are getting, not to talk trash. I love Ecoflow products and hope they make changes to this potentially game changing piece of tech.

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild Місяць тому

      I hear ya, lots of hit or miss experiences with Ecoflow products in general. People tend to either have no issues, or end up in a customer service nightmare. That's strange about the charger not turning on. Ours powers up automatically once it is connected to the Delta 2. There is also a manual power switch hidden on the data port. Did that not work for you? In any case thank you for sharing your experience! We have only had one issue so far. If more problems occur we will provide an update, and yank the links if we can no longer recommend the product.

    • @Jeepjt2020
      @Jeepjt2020 Місяць тому

      @ thank you for your response. It’s not that the unit won’t turn on, it powers on just fine. It actually disconnects from the app on my phone. It will be connected and working fine one second and then it isn’t. Once it disconnects from the app you have to have WiFi to reconnect. I can turn my vehicle on and the green light will show but the app is completely greyed out. I can still access my delta 2 max on the app however it won’t recognize the alternator charger once it has lost connection. I am still in the process of working with Ecoflow so I hope everyone reading this understands that I am just sharing my experience. This is in no way a bad review as there is always things to figure out with new products. If things get resolved I will definitely update my experience. Thanks again

      Wish it just needed bluetooth, Wonder if the engine needs to be running to draw from the tow vehicle or if there's a cutoff voltage. I would like to install a 100 ah battery to draw from.

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild Місяць тому

      @ agreed, it can connect to the app with just Bluetooth but updates require WiFi. And yes you can set a voltage cutoff manually (believe we have it at 13.5v), so at least in theory you would be able to run it off of another battery by dropping the cutoff below 12v.

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild Місяць тому

      DIY power setups are great if you like tinkering or want to do something more custom for your application. They used to be cheaper than turnkey power stations, but not so much any more. We went with the turnkey option mainly to save time, and to have a battery that can easily move from the truck to the house for emergency backup.

    Thanks for the video. I'm an ecoflow fan and had been considering the alternator charger for emergency backup and an extra redundancy. On your trip did you take any solar panels, just in case something happened or did you feel pretty comfortable trusting only the alternator charger?

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching! No solar on that trip. Our backup plan was to charge using a trailer plug to 12v cable that I custom made and ran into the bed through the tailgate gap. That would have charged very slowly, but still better than nothing. We also stayed in hotels/Airbnbs every couple nights since this was our first long trip with a baby. Worse case we could have dragged the battery and the fridge into the hotel to run on AC. Hope that helps!

  • @johndej
    @johndej Місяць тому

    Thanks for the great review! I have two 100 watt solar panels on my canopy and a large storage battery that has been kept fully charged by the panels. In addition, I have a large power inverter to run 120 volt devices when needed. It works, but I probably should have gone with the Ecoflow type system instead. I'm looking at adding a fridge/freezer unit at some point too so I may switch. I was particularly interested in the way you ran the power cable. I know those plastic plugs can pop out as well. I need to run a small cord from the cab to the canopy space for a rear view camera. At the moment, it's just going through the sliding windows but that's been a pain. I haven't been able to find a port through the cab wall yet unfortunately. I don't want to drill, but that my be my ultimate solution. But seeing the way you ran that cable under the cab gives me some ideas for using a firewall wire port instead. Thanks again!

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild Місяць тому

      We considered a DIY power system, but needed a solution in a hurry after our Goal Zero didn’t cut it on our Steens Trip. The choice is a toss up these days, especially if you can get a deal on a power station. Yes sounds like running the wiring back out through the firewall grommet would be the cleanest solution. For more details on running wires under the vehicle search for U-Haul’s trailer wiring installation guide.

    Honestly, after a couple of years of wearing a Fjallraven Vidda Pro I can say that every technical jacket with a membrane is far superior for outdoor use if rain can be present, with less weight and similar cost. It's important to note that this kind of fabric, EVEN with the wax applied, is everything but waterproof. It provides some water resistance, but you can't really expect to stay dry even in moderate rain for more than 5-10 minutes. I still like the Fjallraven for camping around the fire and stuff, but only in mild weather. Getting soaked when you are out there is an abolute nightmare and really ruins your experience.

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      For sure, we tried to make it clear that this is not a great hiking jacket, and that it is only water resistant, not water proof. If you need to stay dry Gortex is the only way to go in our experience. This jacket is best for use around town or around a campfire, and it's perfect for that! Just did some fall camping over the weekend and it was the only outer layer that I used.

    I want to start dispersed camping with my 2 year old but how do you find safe campsites that prohibit hunting ?

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      Honestly in our experience hunters haven't been that big of a deal. Seasons are limited in most places, and hunters try to get further away from roads to find game. You can always wear bright colors and camp in sites that are more exposed to avoid being mistaken for animals. If we do hear gunshots (not at all uncommon in the woods, and not generally a cause for concern) we make noise, up to the point of honking the horn, to alert the hunters to our presence.

    Of all the Skogso reviews, this was the most helpful. Like you, I live in the PNW and was curious how it fares with our rainy weather. And this video demonstrates its water resistance and its limit, and I'm impressed. 30 min in that rain before water begins to seep in is enough for what than I need it for.

      Really appreciate the feedback! Agreed, if there is going to be an extended downpour it's best to head to cover or grab something with a Gortex shell, but for most day to day applications the Skogso gets the job done with a little rain or snow! This has absolutely been my go-to jacket from 30-50 degrees -Dylan

    Hi.. I reasonably pick up my oru bruin and take it out for our camping trip. It was very heavy raining day and I have lot of water coming inside the tent and lots of condensation. Also Also the four fabric windows is getting very wet. Do you have any of this issues? Love your videos. Thanks

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching! I replied to your question on the Oru FB group a few weeks ago. You really shouldn't be seeing water come through the fabric sections of the tent, check with Oru on that. Condensation on the other hand is going to happen with all campers. The best way to reduce it is to always have a window cracked. If you have the fan installed that can help too.

    How has it worked out for you thus far? Working well? Think youll make any changes?

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      Yes, it's not 100% dust proof but it has offered a significant improvement. We show the results in our Steens Mountain video that went up last week. A little dust still makes it in, but under the same conditions without the seal there would have been a layer coating everything in the camper. As far as changes go we'll have to see if we can determine where the remaining dust is getting through. Next step may be to focus on the camper, not the tailgate.

    I love seeing people continue to do what they love especially with a little one. Just because a baby comes along doesn't mean life stops for the fun stuff so good for you guys! Our daughter had her 2 weeks old son on our pontoon boat at the lake. He grew up around the water and guess what, we can't keep him off of it lol. I found out on our overland trip that our truck invertor isn't big enough to charge our solar generator either. They draw a lot if you use the 110. It's better if you use the 12 volt charge if that is an option.

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      That means a lot! We're trying to show other parents (and prospective parents) that travel with a little one is possible. Yeah we used the 12v charger with a homemade cable coming from the trailer plug for this trip. Had to run the fridge off of the 110 outlet because of issues with the 12v plug and Dometic's battery protection system. We've since upgraded to a much better solution with the Ecoflow alternator charger.

    Great video! I'm glad your baby had such a great time. I was over that direction with our photography club at the end of June. We were staying at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge. I chose to sleep in my camper while the rest of the group stayed in the dorms. Due to a combination of issues, I made the decision to leave after two nights The rest of the group went to the Steens for the day. They had a great time and did see a few of the wild horses. Another guy was having trouble with the altitude so I ended up bringing him home too. He told me that he'd been trying to get to the Steens for 50 years. I felt very bad for him. But your video has inspired me to give it another try some time.

      Thank you! You absolutely should find another opportunity to go out there. September and October are ideal months since the top of the loop is snow free, and the aspens are turning. If you do the whole loop drive it counter clockwise for the best views!

    What garage height is needed for parking at home?

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      Sorry for the delayed reply! Garage height will largely depend on how high your truck rides. We have a standard height garage door and could barely squeeze through if we wanted to... but typically this lives outside all year.

    It appears that she can sit fully upright on the bed without her head touching the ceiling? If that's correct, what's her 'Sitting Height'?

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      Hey Patrick, sorry for the slow response, we've been busy! Sitting on the bed without touching the roof will be a little tight for someone of average or above average height. We both can make it work but our hair tends to touch the ceiling.

    Did Our Designs include seam seals between panel gaps unlike they didn't do with the non XL model?

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      Where is it leaking? We’ve had issues around some of the windows in very heavy rain, also underneath the plastic on the bed rail. Not on the top itself. Something to have Oru fix for you regardless.

    Is it really a hardtop? Seems like there is a canvas

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      Yes it’s a hybrid design. We’ve found that we end up opening the soft portions for ventilation most of the time, so it doesn’t make a huge difference that they aren’t hard sided. Might be more noticeable in true winter camping.

    Wish they made/offered a longer cabover bed so you sleep two up without sliding the bed out also so you can close the top without having to have the bed pulled out. Just like the Projec M and Tune.

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild 2 місяці тому

      @@zackaryclarke3227 I believe the standard bed configuration for the XL is a queen configured east/west that fits in the cabover section. It turns into a north/south king with an extension. Very similar to the Project M or the Tune.

    overlanding ~ A gentrified term for "camping" so companies can sell you overpriced gear. Seriously... If you spend $10k plus on a bed for the top of you truck, you're not too bright.

      Sorry for the slow reply on this, we've been on the road! We typically do not wear them with socks. Haven't had any odor issues yet because we only wear them when it is chilly out.
