  • It was late August and Central Oregon's fire season was in full swing. With air quality being questionable we swapped our plans for a guy's backpacking trip in the mountains to a Central Oregon high desert adventure. We did some spelunking in the Derrick Cave Lava Tube, met some cows, and camped on top of a mountain in gloriously clean air.

That looked like a great guys trip. Nice that there’s so many options to see and explore when the original plan has to change.
I wish the 4 wheel popped up as quick easy as the Oru, maybe someday I’ll put stronger shocks on it.

We’re lucky to have a ton of options within a 2 hour drive for sure. Is the FWC slow to lift? I know you have to go inside to finish the setup. The flip side is that only the gas struts support the roof on the Oru, we may need to add some supports in heavy snow.

@@Western-Wild it’s not really slow to lift but definitely heavy. It holds up well to minor trail damage though, got my first dent from a tree a couple days ago.

@@scottalpine glad to hear you're putting it to good use! Scratches and dents are to be expected. We'll likely upgrade our gas struts eventually if we end up mounting anything on the roof.

I have camped on the southeast side of pine mountain a couple times and drove up the side that you guys went down a couple years ago, the observatory was still closed up but cool to see. Been wanting to get to derrick cave but have been in skeleton, wind, and a couple other caves back in the late 90's and I agree good lighting is essential, back then we didn't have the lead lights like we have now and I usually took a propane lantern, extra tanks and mantles, flashlights with batteries, and an old florescent camping lantern that I sure wish I still had lol.

It’s a neat area that we need to explore more! Would love to make it up there when the observatory is open but the dates are pretty limited.
High powered lighting is a game changer for caves! The first time we visited Derrick cave we were under prepared with headlamps that needed new batteries. Have to imagine how wild it was to explore places like this with just a torch.

@@Western-Wild it was definitely an adventure for sure, wind cave went back 2.5 miles iirc and you're always going up and over piles of rocks, from what I gather back in the 80's some time the ceiling sort of gave way and before that it was smooth all the way back to the end
