Have I found the secret to knitting lace?! 👀 + Big WIP energy // Goodknits Knitting Podcast 20
Since finishing my 3 main knitting projects last episode I've had a ton of new energy to cast on projects, and none of them were planned. I've got a brand new lace shirt to wrap up my summer knitting, and I've got a mohair stockinette sweater that was the perfect mindless knit for my trip to Munich to see Adele.

    Haha! I went to a knit group about a year ago and was bragging about the exact same thing (lots of markers for repeats), and one of the ladies rolled her eyes and was like, “everybody knows to do that, duh!” I didn’t know that! Nobody says to do that, how would you know! Glad someone else found the discovery, I still feel like a genius every time I do it! Best trick ever!

      Exactly! Why does nobody openly talk about this or write it in patterns?! So many comments here saying everyone does this but I've never heard anyone talk about it. It really is such a life saver of a trick though

    Hi Sheri, love your knitting mojo, the new WiPs are gorgeous! Love the colours particularly the green in the Kremke Soul wool. I think a black top with a cropped black cardigan, black tights & boots would look great with your Pepitas skirt. Alternatively you mentioned the green Kremke Soul wool, I think that would look great with it too (sticking with the black boots & tights). Trying to match up the brown would be tricky. Looking forward to seeing your styling. Best wishes 🧶

    Hey been loving your updates on this, as I’m knitting the dress now. However, in this section I’m having a problem. On page 16/39, at the end of the top left front section, the decreases don’t seem to make sense. I am doing bust size 4, so I have 13 stitches on my needles, which matches what the pattern says. However, it then says to do 12 decreases rows over 36 total rows (every 3rd row). Then it says I should have 10 stitches on my needles. But that implies I should have only made 3 decreases! Not sure if I’m misreading something. Did you have the same issue, and if so did you do the 3 increases every 3 rows at the start and then just do stockinette to make the 36 rows, or knit a decrease row every 12 rows? Thanks!

    • @Goodknits_
      @Goodknits_ 10 годин тому

      Hi Anika! So nice you are knitting the dress. This is a super difficult pattern to give specific help on because of all the tailoring and custom measurements but I don't recall having any specific issues with the decreases. Based on your gauge do you have any instructions you need to change to be based on the calculator vs the pattern? That is usually what tripped me up as sometimes you needed to ignore the written pattern and instead focus on the calculator as the decreases would be different based on my row gauge. Maybe that is the case for you?

    Yes to generously using stitch markers! I do the same thing for colorwork and cable patterns too. If it's a really long pattern repeat, sometime I'll also use different colored stitch markers to indicate different parts of the pattern

    I use this method for pattern repeats on crochet and knitting. I found that my plastic stitch markers felt uncomfortable so I changed them for tiny, elastic hair bands. When asked what all the stitch markers are for, I say it's to make my knitting idiot proof!😂 Its working very well on my current project.

    Great vid and so fun you travelled to see Adele! For the Pepitas Skirt, I think it would look good with a light denim/chambray button up slightly tucked in. And maybe a white or cream mockneck tee underneath or a cami with a cute brown or red bandana or kerchief around the neck. You could also do a light beige/natural linen color top.

    With the skirt, you can wear a loose fit kni top, either hitting at the waist or tunic length. I would stay in the same color family but I wouldn't do matchy-matchy😊. For shoes you can do a black boot with chunky heals either short or long and a black bag. Black and brown is a very chic combo.

  • @christina9156

    I think black boots would actually look great with the Pepitas skirt! As long as they go up past your ankles so they don’t visually cut off your legs you should be good (e.g. knee high boots, but some chunkier shorter or heeled boots could work too!). I think the colour combination of the two different shades of brown on the skirt with the black of the shoes would work nicely as well - perhaps also go for some black tights to pull everything together? And for a top you could definitely go for something brown like you mentioned for a more uniform look, but I think basically any neutral would look great too. Whether that’s white, cream, grey, taupe or any other neutral colour is totally up to you and your closet :) I think the skirt is versatile enough to really be dressed up or down depending on what look you prefer.

    I always put stitch markers between the chart repeats (lace, cables, color works etc) I’m disappointed that you said the Stromboli is a slog. I bought the pattern the day it came out. I haven’t started it yet. I also always do my ribbing in the main needle size and don’t go down a size.

    • @Goodknits_
      @Goodknits_ 8 днів тому

      Oh no I don't want to discourage you from the Stromboli! 80% of my opinion on it being a slog is due to the yarn cause the linen is giving me so many problems. Otherwise it's actually a really engaging knit, just moves a bit slow cause it's fingering. Will be worth all that effort though so definitely knit it!

    I think a plum/greyish purple top would be nice with the pepitas skirt (for instance a turtleneck). I had a look at your finished objects and from the photos it seems that your Woolfolk Gallant Sweater and your Sweater No 8 and Una Sweater could be a good combination. Since the skirt is more fitted, it would probably be nice to have a top that is a bit larger. For the Micaela sweater, I think it could be nice to wear a blouse under it (white, grey or dark blue for example)

    I would go for a soft leather ankle boot (ie like the classic ACNE studios ones or the ones from Miista) that would be such a nice line for the leg with this length of skirt and would pair well with bare legs or with tights :)

    @kathyellis2506 9 днів тому

    I think you need to find either a thin blouse or thin knit turtleneck (like in the photo) in a shade very close to either of the browns in your skirt (which is beautiful!!). Then I think either black or brown boots would look nice.

  • @Glaleria
    @Glaleria 9 днів тому

    For the skirt, I was gonne say, some nice low heel pumps in the nude color… but if you want it a bit more casual, go for dark brown enkle booties. And your fluffy pink whip will go perfect on it! Finish with some nice pearl earrings and done! Or, knit a matching blazer/jacket, with a cream blouse. Or a sweater in the same dark brown yarn for a more toned down look. 💁🏼‍♀️ but pearls always work, or some nice big statement golden hoop earrings :D go for it! Or, for a summer look: white tee with some nice white sneakers, also an option 😅 I love styling haha

  • @lornaburnham5465
    @lornaburnham5465 9 днів тому

    I always use stitch markers in cable and lace patterns! Like u said saves ripping out a whole row! As for styling your skirt. Who says black and brown don't go together??🤔u could style it with a ribbed shirt either in same color as the light colored yarn or a off white. Then add in a short black "biker" jacket, black purse and black boots -high or short would work!

    • @Goodknits_
      @Goodknits_ 8 днів тому

      Lot's of people saying to pair black & brown together which is good to hear as that makes styling much easier for me! I just always have in my mind that you shouldn't pair them but I guess that is outdated thinking 😂

    Loved the episode! I also always put a stitch marker for every repeat whenever I'm knitting anything with repeats. It's much easier and faster to figure out if you messed up 😅 What I also do is use different stitch markers to mark when I'm half way through the round and when I have one repeat left. For some reason that really encourages me to keep going and reach the next "important" marker.

    • @Goodknits_
      @Goodknits_ 8 днів тому

      The Stromboli actually has a side seam marker on it so you know when to do a single knit stitch and that definitely helps make the knitting feel like it's moving faster cause it's a nice mid-row check-in. I'll need to remember to use that for sure textured projects!

    I like your skirt a lot - and here is how I would set in the elastic: 1. Buy the elastic before you knit the waistband 3,5 to 4 cm wide! 2. Knit the waistband so it fits ecactly - knit a purl round where the waistband has to be turned around the elastic. Bind off so it is stretchy. 3. Sew the waistband down to where you picked up stitches for it - and leave an 8 cm opening! 4. Now draw the elastic into the tunnel you have created, you can use a safety pin in one of the ends of the elastic to make it easier! 5. Sew the elastic together - taake care not to twist it 6. And finally sew the opening together - and your done! In my opinion a creme coloured shirt (silk) or a t-shirt would look great with the skirt! Looking forward to seeing you in the outfit! 😎

    Your Stromboli top is beautiful. I haven’t tried working with linen but understand it’s very hard on the hands. I think it’ll be worth it in the end it’s just gorgeous!!

    Thank you for another wonderful and inspiring podcast :) I am thinking about knitting the Nola dress by Marita Harvey at some point. Maybe that could be something. I am sure it is easy to modify it if you don`t like the high neck :)

      Someone else mentioned this pattern too and I think it's perfect! Would maybe modify to a DK weight instead of aran and change up the neck, but the fit looks like exactly what I want.

    I do the same thing with stitch markers when knitting either lace or colorwork. You're right. It's so helpful! As far as the skirt, I think it would look good with a chocolate brown fitted turtleneck and some brown knee high boots. Or a cream fitted turtleneck and some tan/cream sneakers

    12:21 If you have access to wooden needles I would recommend these (not bamboo though) and adding some life lines to your project. Some people report an improvement (wrist pain) after using some grippy tape at their tension finger. I like to use my head lamp when knitting darker colors - it’s meant for climbing and outdoor activities so it’s more versatile (brightness, more stable cone of light) then a crafting necklace style light.

    Hi Sheri, your wips are very inspiring! I love thinking about outfits for my projects so here's my ideas. I actually think that the skirt would pair well with the pink mohair sweater you're making, and also with the green t shirt or the sonya shirt. I think for shoes I'd go with loafers for a preppy look or laced oxford style, and for when it gets even colder boots (I'd go with knee high) as you mentioned. I don't think it would look bad with black boots if you keep bare legs/or skin color tights if it's cold. Other colors I'd try with it: cream, brown (I think you made a camel brown vest maybe with a tshirt/button up underneath?), taupe, cream, even a warm grey might work (some knitted grey have some "cream" color in them), burgundy too.

      ok, youtube just served me your short with all the sweater you knit :D I would try with the sweater no 8, sweater no 1, and the cumulus blouse too. Basically from the colors I see on the screen in my opinion you have a lot of options :D

    Sheri, I'm knitting the Barbroe top with the Antigone!! All over lace tank with bra friendly straps, bottom up - but damn casting on with that yarn and getting the edge decreases was a task. 300 something cast on, 3mm needles. Yes it's taking forever and it hurts but I'm so invested in how beautiful the fabric is.

    I did this on my last colorwork sweater -- started at every 8 and was at every 16 by the bottom of the yoke. It was a pain to slip them all at times and I complained because I had something like a total of 21 repeats, but it definitely kept me straight and kept me going!!
