Cutting tatami with a custom type XIV arming sword from Swordier
In this video, I cut tatami mats with a custom type XIV arming sword from Swordier. I chose a short grip length (88 mm) as I have found this to be very advantageous when performing cuts through thick dense targets. This was best illustrated by the clean cuts performed during the double cut combo on the double roll mat.

In this video, I performed cuts on tatami with a pattern 1896 British Mountain Artillery saber. Each of the cutting patterns in this video utilize an elbow moulinet before a cut. These cutting feats will be included in my first saber cutting tournament that I will run this October at Fright Fight 2024.
Cutting tatami with an ATrim XVIII.7 arming sword (munition grade) from Angus Trim
Переглядів 8425 місяців тому
In this video, I cut some mats with an ATrim XVIII.7 that Angus Trim generously provided as a prize for the 2024 Combat Con tournaments. This arming sword is part of Gus's "munition grade" line, which costs about $400 less than an ATrim in full polish. As can be seen in the video, this sword performs very well!
Cutting tatami mats with an early 19th century British artillery saber
Переглядів 1,1 тис.7 місяців тому
Happy Memorial Day! In this video, I did some initial cutting with an early 19th century British artillery saber that I recently bought from an online antique dealer. Based on the 1796 light cavalry saber, the blade on this artillery saber is 30 inches long (3 inches shorter than the 1796). This artillery saber has a cast iron grip, making the sword very durable. This sword was also the basis f...
Cutting double tatami rolls with the "Blue Baron" German Battle Sword from Lancelot Sword

In this video, I cut double tatami mats targets with the "Blue Baron" German Battle Sword that was sent to me for testing and review from Lancelot Sword. Previous initial cutting with this sword convinced me that double mats were the proper target for this sword, and as can be seen in the video, it cut through these tough Kageyama tatami double rolls with ease. This sword can be here on the Lan...

Here is some old footage of a cutting practice in Richard Marsden's backyard prior to the 2015 SoCal Swordfight, my first HEMA event. SoCal was in early November that year, so this footage would have been from mid-October. The cut combinations that I practiced were from previous Longpoint cutting tournaments, one of the few sources of HEMA cutting videos that I could find at the time. The sword...
Double cut combination with the new Persian Shamshir from LK Chen Swords!

In this video, I performed a same-side double cut combination with the Persian Shamshir from LK Chen Swords. As you can see in the video, the very curved blade cuts through tatami with ease, the cut pieces dropping straight to the ground. I bought this shamshir from Kult of Athena and it is also available for purchase at www.lkchensword.com.

All old weapons have one thing in common: field ruggedness. You can pull this out of a burning casemate and still quickly remove body parts from an opposing force

In early childhood, I was frightened by the depiction of a cavalry saber fight in Sholokhov's famous novel And Quiet Flows the Don (Тихий Дон) during the Russian Revolution. In the novel, which takes place during the Russian Civil War and World War I, the protagonist, Grigory Melekhov, experiences many horrors of a civil war, including surviving saber wounds. One of these involves a significant injury to the shoulder during a brutal cavalry fight. Thats when I realised that during that period the saber was not a secondary weapon..

is that an antique, or a repro? The british with the D guard is hard to find, seems they all went to Canadian regiments for some reason. The Indian P guards are way more accessible.

This is an antique that I found in very good condition. I have seen others for sale, but yes the Indian model with the brass guard is more common.

Ordered one of thes yesterday. I have been researching daggers but found most daggers to be a bit to short on the blade. This is the only example I could find thats both long and has a cross guard. I was hoping the length would improve the cutting capability and I guess you proved it right here. 8 years old but still gold!
