Building a VersaTube VersaFinish Shop in My Backyard
This is the reason I haven't been able to post any car videos lately. I'm building my dream shop in the form of a 24x36x12 VersaTube metal building. In this video, we'll go through the process as I learn how to do it.

Building a Volvo B230 16-Valve Turbo Engine: Part 1
Переглядів 10 тис.6 місяців тому
I think this is technically the second episode of what I hope will be a cohesive series about my Volvo 142 Turbo project. In this video, we'll assemble the B230 bottom end that I've had in my garage for a couple years. It's getting lots of shiny, upgraded parts that should make for a durable path to a 400 horsepower Volvo.
PROJECT INTRO: Resurrecting My 16-Valve Turbo Volvo 142

After letting it sit for nearly 5 years, I'm jumping back into my favorite project car. In this video, I'll give you a brief history of my 1968 Volvo 142, and start the process of swapping the engine.
Lifted 944 Road Trip Prep
Переглядів 2,5 тис.8 місяців тому
I'm driving the 944 from up here in Oregon, down to Santa Cruz, CA to work and ride bikes. It needed a few things before I felt it was road trip worthy, so here's a video log of all that work.
How to Install an Auxbeam 6-Gang Switch Panel
Переглядів 15 тис.8 місяців тому
I wanted all the switches in one place in my Land Rover Discovery, and it seems like Auxbeam has a good solution. In this video, I'll go through the unboxing, installation, and a brief review of the Auxbeam AR-600 LED Switch Panel. Here's the link to the panel: auxbeam.com/TFR2/AR-600 And here's a discount code to get 15% off: TFR2
I put 35s on my Disco 1!
Переглядів 25 тис.9 місяців тому
I've been wanting to put the Disco on (metric) 35s for a bit, and in this video, I'll show you everything I needed to do to make that happen. I'm making it harder on myself but not wanting to use fender flares, so gaining the needed clearance is a bit of work. 00:00 - Intro 00:37 - RTE 3" Springs 05:35 - Rear Suspension Link 07:51 - Making Rear Trailing Arms 16:31 - Driving Impressions
Aux Beam 360-Pro 9" Driving Lights for my Land Rover Discovery
Переглядів 3 тис.10 місяців тому
Since I recently took the Hella driving lights off the Discovery to put on the lifted Porsche, I needed a replacement. These 9" LED lights I got from Aux Beam are insane, and I made a quick video showing how I installed them on the Disco. Use code TFR1 for 15% off the lights in this video: auxbeam.com/products/360-pro-series-custom-lens-offroad-led-driving-lights?PRO&J240219&TylerFrasca 00:00 -...
Everything I've done to my Land Rover

NEW PROJECT: I lifted my Porsche 944
Переглядів 14 тис.11 місяців тому
I've been trying to decide what to do with this car pretty much since I got it, and I finally figured it out. In this video, I install coilovers, tires, and lights to turn my 944 into a pretty solid base for a "safari" car.
Land Rover Discovery in the Snow
Переглядів 3 тис.11 місяців тому
I've made a couple videos of this trail for the channel, but never in the snow. This is just a short video of a trip up to the top in my Discovery. Hopefully the forecast is accurate and we get some real snow soon. If and when that happens, I'll go do my best to get stuck.
Discovery in the Woods
Переглядів 5 тис.11 місяців тому
Shannon and I checked out a new zone in Lane Country, Oregon. Finding some rocks to slide around on was cool, but finding dozens of bottles and cans was not. People need to do better. Anyway, these trails (tracks if you're Australian) weren't bad, but I'd say they were close to the limit of what I'd want to do with 33" tires. I guess the Disco needs 40s...

My D2 V8 is just at 196,000 and I agree that it can feel a little gutless, but it does sound good. Also agree that an LS would make a nice addition - especially as I am pretty certain it would do more to the gallon than the Rover lump !
Great DIY video, clear, concise and without a lot of unnecessary jibberjabber...
does it matter what amp fuse you connect the wire to in order to power the controller itself? like what’s the best amp fuse to tap into for it?
I tapped into the 20 amp cigarette lighter fuse.
@ so is that a constant power or no?

People really need to learn the difference between a carport and a shop, the difference in language is significant in it illustrates that people have no idea of the monetary difference between the two
Are you saying this is a carport? Where I come from, a carport doesn’t have walls and is mainly used for parking a car under. Shop is short for "workshop", and that's exactly what I'm building here, in every sense of the word.
@tfrasca142 yes this is absolutely a carport just look at the thickness of the tube members not to mention the name of the company you're buying it from. I've been a builder for 40 years, can I get so tired of people complaining about the quality of their "shop", when in reality they have a carport with walls screwed on. Just saying, I want you to be prepared for what you are getting, and what you are not going to get,
If your structural members are not 11 gauge or less, and your metal sheeting is not 22 gauge or less, you have a carport with metal sheeting screwed on the outside.
Aura carport with whatever you screw on the outside
@@whitneypalm2438 I just don’t see how the construction of the thing affects what I end up using it for. This will be a shop, not a carport. Maybe it’s thinner gauge tubing than you like, but in no way is a fully enclosed building a “carport”. Would you call a stick built garage a carport? Structurally, this is every bit as stout as a stick build. I’m not saying this is the best way to build a shop, but it’s definitely not a carport.
where did you get the graphics from ? link ?

I would love to watch this series if it wasn't for the incredible annoying music.
@@MrFiction80 Sorry to disappoint. What genre of royalty free music would you prefer? I really am curious.
@tfrasca142 I would really prefer no music at all. I like your attention to detail and the production value of the video itself. On that part you are doing a fantastic job! But the music ruins it for me. (And on a lot of other videos from other creators) The volume is to uneven and to loud at times. I turn the volume down, but then I can't hear you speak. I prefer no music like on "my mechanics" or "Croker vs rover". I've seen a lot of people complain about music in videos, but I have never seen a comment like "Do you know what this video could benifit from? Some hysterical music!" But that's just one (mine) persons opinion. 😄
@ Alright, that makes sense. I personally can’t stand a silent video, especially when certain editing techniques I use have no ambient sound. So no music would leave it with absolute silence. I’ll admit that music is the hardest part of editing, though. Thanks for the constructive feedback.
Came for the shop, stayed for the other content. Win/win.
My surveyor offered the service to come out when we were going to build a metal building. They recommended at least twice. Once after we thought we had the correct placement, and a second time on pour day to make sure that the corners were within 1/4 inch of perfect. On one job they said that on the first visit they had seen corners be as much as 32 inches off after formwork was built.
I wish I had double checked the forms before they poured. You'll see in the next video how being about an inch out of square made a ton of extra work for me. 32 inches out is absolutely insane though.
I’m still waiting for part 2!!
Me too! I have what I would call most of a video edited. Just need to wrap up a few things.
use aspen two-stroke oil the world's best adhesion - pistons - piston rings - piston pins - crankshaft - bearings etc. - camshaft plenty of oil
I wouldn't want wood on the outside.
Nice. I do want wood on the outside.
What's the wind load rating on that building? Hope you will do a cost breakdown when you're done.
124 mph. I plan on doing a total cost breakdown, as depressing as that will be.
I have no intentions of building a similar structure, but I loved the video. Clean, easy and chill. Without ever seing your channel before this video had already won me over, and then you mention the Volvo stuff. It's like I want to subscribe, then unsubscribe just to be able to subscribe again. Great work!
Thanks! Glad to see there’s some overlap between metal accessory buildings and turbo bricks.
My complements on your installation and videography. Are you doing a follow up on the final phases of the build? Thanks!
Thank you. I’m working on the next video now, but I’m in the fiddle little details phase, so progress is slowing down. I want to get the video out this month, though.
I just finished my versatube 12 by 36 RV shelter last September. It is enclosed on three sides with the front open and a man door in the back. I was able to build it completely by myself, but being 66 years old, it took me longer than I expected.
I’m impressed that you were able to raise the trusses alone. Well done.
Will there be a part 2 ? :)
Absolutely, but I need to finish my shop build first. Had to reprioritize some things, but now the Volvo engine will be finished in a new shop space.
"Permitting" is why I live in the country. Once they pay for the building they can tell me how to build it. City, county, state and federal governments have become the #1 barrier to peace and success. If I build it and it falls over I'll build it better next time. If someone is buying my property and don't like the way I built something then they can either not buy or change it when they own it. Now where in those transactions can a bloated nanny gov make things better?
I hear you. If I could be just outside city limits on about 10 acres, I absolutely would.
Really cool. Thanks for sharing this.
Cool
What an awesome short, so well done!! Love my old D1 as well.
Curious how thick is your cement slab? Great video, thanks for sharing as I’m looking to build my own shop like this. Please do a second video, would love to see how it turns out.
Thanks, glad it’s relevant to your interests. I have a second video in the works. Slab is 4” with a 12x16” footer. Also one section that’s 6” thick where the lift will go.
Really enjoyed the vid. Can’t wait to see it finished up
Thanks, more to come soon!
What did this cost? Doing it in wood seems like it would cost a lot more and probably last just as long
Wood is definitely more expensive, even though I’m using relatively cheap t1-11. Not sure on total cost yet, but it’ll probably top 30k.
Great video, I am in the process of buying a place, but it has an HOA, so the details on a versafinish install are really helpful. Would be great if you can share your all in cost when it is all said and done.
Yeah, I'll try to tally it all up when I'm "finished". Goal is 30k.
Why would anyone buy into a HOA 😵💫😵💫😵💫
@johndeninger8905 it is very common where I live, even in rural areas. I got a really good deal on a new build with some acreage, more space for less money than a used home. The good news is that the rules are fairly relaxed.
Thanks for a amazing video!!!
whats up with the ridiculous music?
What would you have preferred?
You should “yield” my balls! Anyways truck looks good!
Do you feel like this was more affordable or easier than doing this with the traditional stick framing?
I think stick built framing could have been a couple thousand dollars cheaper than the VersaFinish frame. But I would have had to find a local engineer to draw and stamp all the plans, whereas the VersaTube process has that step included for a better price than sourcing it myself. Now that I’m doing the siding, I do wish the framing was wood. So many self-tapping screws…
What rims do you have? They look great!
Thanks, they’re off a Ford Crown Vic, redrilled to 5x108.
Nice!
Love your choice of music 🎶 brother. I do enjoy jazz, but don't get to hear it much on UA-cam. 😮x
Glad to hear it, thanks!
Nice work
No pitch on that slab....good looking garage though!
Do you mean it should be pitched so the water drains out of the door? I wish I had known more about any of this when I paid to have the slab done. Would have definitely asked for that.
@@tfrasca142 Yessir, usually pitched towards the door, usually the contractor would talk about it but its another task for them to make sure it's pitched, either pitched towards the door or a drain in the floor that just gravity feeds out the back to get the water off the slab. You can always cut and plum a drain in the floor if it gets too bad but it might not even be a problem so no sweat
@@caseydman4651 Like I usually do, I went with the lowest bid on the concrete, and they definitely didn't mention anything about drainage. If I ever build another shop, that's one of the many things I'll do differently.
I ordered this for Black Friday. So connecting this to a constant power would drain the battery even with the lights off? I'm wanting the capability use the lights with the ignition off through the app. Is this possible?
I guess the only real drain would be the blue LED on the controller when you switch it to standby mode. If you forget but it in standby mode though, all the lighting on the controller may drain the battery after a while. They’re all LEDs though so it’s probably a very small draw. I say try it and test the amperage draw with a multimeter. It would be cool to be able to control the lights and stuff remotely with the app.
Why buy this when I can order one with all the precut metal siding and roof with all trim nneded?
If you want metal siding and don’t want any sheathing under the metal roof, then order that one. I got this one for the reasons mentioned in the video.
Nice project! I like the rims. What size are they? I also like the 140 and own one from 1970.
Thanks. The wheels are 16x7. They’re from a Ford Crown Victoria, redrilled to 5x108.
hahahaha , this made me stop to comment .. hahaha " But the phillips head screw WILL strip out if you look at it wrong " hahahaha epic ..
Yo my dude! Really happy to have your channel recommended today, great video and incredible editing. I'm currently in the process of constructing a small 14x16 workshop and the marathon finish before winter sets in is a challenge. Couldn't do it without the help of my father and some friends. Cheers mate!
Thanks! Glad to commiserate with others who put off shop builds until fall…
The B20 in my car is getting a little tired can I hire yo to slap one of these into my 72 142 :) Here is a video of my 142 ua-cam.com/video/7eX3oNhzn-I/v-deo.html
I was debating going with a Versatube building (25x36x10, hoa limits me to 900sqft😢) Ill have to get a hold of them to see if a 10' lean-to is possibe with one of these. Great video and I look forward to the next one!
I’m pretty sure there’s a lean-to option in the configuration thing on the VersaTube website.
