Voices of Change: Gwen Baxter
After being married for only one year, Gwen’s husband was killed by law enforcement, sparking her activism in reducing police gun violence. Only four years later, her son was shot while running an errand to the store. These tragedies left her heartbroken but also filled her with a new purpose.
Often, mothers who have lost their children to gun violence can become so consumed by grief that they feel paralyzed. Since losing her son, Gwen co-founded The Sisterhood, an organization with the mission to support mothers who have lost children to gun violence and help them to find healthy ways to manage their grief. The Sisterhood is a way to keep their children’s voices and stories alive and share them with the world.
