Voices of Change: LaToya Smith

In 2012, LaToya’s son, Timothy, was tragically shot and killed during an armed robbery while trying to protect patrons and employees of a liquor store where he worked. His murder has forever left a hole in her heart and taken a father away from his daughter.
Although Timothy’s murderer was convicted, LaToya remains in the fight to end gun violence for other mothers who have not received the same justice. The fact is only 17% of murders in the first ten months of 2023 ended in arrest. This continues to drive LaToya’s advocacy and involvement with One Aim Illinois’ Survivors Council.
