- This is my latest Def Poetry Appearance. It's an open letter to my unborn child. And yes, I was really pregnant. I have my son as proof:).
Thank you to Mohannad for providing the video. Check out his response to my other poem.
This is one of myfav poems, you speak with such passion. My mother also wrote a poem to me but while she was carrying me , and that peom to this day guides me as Im sure yours will guide your son. Be Blessed Sis :D
I saw this when Def Poetry was still running on HBO and I'm so glad I found it on youtube. This video is saved to my favorites and I NEVER get tired of listening to your beautiful words. :)
I’ve been coming back to listen to this poem for more than a decade now. I listened to it before I got pregnant, during, and even now, 12 years later. So much love is wordless, but this poem puts words to things people can’t make words of. Thank you ❤
I write poetry and this is just another reason why you can never go wrong with poetry!!
When I want to feel uplifted, I play this video. It means so much to me. I often wonder how much I'm affected by the poetry I listen to and I think this one has had a huge influence.
Thank you for that. Your words mean so much to me. I grew up with out a father and I know this is from a mother to her unborn but your words transcend that. I thank you for the brilliant light your words have emblazoned on my heart, soul and mind.
Watching this after having experienced the gift of your book....so much perspective!!! I am in awe of you. Keep inspiring and telling the truth!
This picture of facing the sunrise from its wrong side has been on my mind ever since I saw this video for the first time, probably many months ago. It is so aptly put. I too was living nightly days only with metaphoriacally reversed sunbeams. Thank you for giving it word so fittingly.
OMG u are so dreamy! ur words fly like a melody! great! much appreciated!
this was beautiful. words haven't moved me this much in a while. i cried watching this.
wow! this is awesome. Thank you so much.Your capacity to communicate your thoughts and feelings economically, capably and compellingly is wondrous. Like a verbal alchemist.

You are inspirational! Not only are you the most amazing pregnant woman I have ever seen, your poetry is beautiful! And props to you for wearing those heels!
Oh my goodness, so beautiful!
Bassey...you looked gorgeous!!!! And the fact that yhou went from the hospital to the stage to bedrest...GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!
This is the translation of the rapid heartbeats in every soon to be mother's chest. And the verbs of tears cried when those same "babies" leave the nest for their own separate lives. Girl, I am feeling what you do!
this is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Blessings to you and yours Ms Ikpi.
@Basseyworld Oh my goodness, I thought is was wonderful and I love the similes and light usage of metaphors. The passion is evident. Who would wish harm..... Stay strong and beautiful for your family...
This is one of my favorite poems. I get chills every time I listen to it!
This poem got me through the most difficult time of my life, back when I was 16.
And now, I write. Thank you Bassey.
you are so beautiful, and so is this poem. you were not too big for this dress, this is what motherhood looks like. in fact you were smaller than most expecting. great words... love this poem, it was, is so powerful. i want, hope and pray for the same things for my seeds to come. think it, speak it, live it and so shall it be. love and light
Girl, you were BEAUTIFUL. That dressed accented your curves perfectly.... you were glowing... you were free.
I dug your poem and the message within. I felt your concern even though I have no babies of my own.
"need you here, now, for balance"... deep and... sad. but i feel you.
congratulations on your son
your words are beautiful
I'm touched.
Beautiful dress on you as well.
I was watching this as someone I know is getting packed up to give birth to their daughter and tears came to my eyes. That was absolutely beautiful!

wow beautiful and inspirational..So amazing and your speaking voice is so inviting and easy to listen to.
There's little more beautiful then the spoken dreams and aspirations of a mother over their unborn child. The wonder that's born when a mother allows her mind to wander and see the possibilities of what she is about to bring forth is amazing to me. That was hot sistah.

it must be a burden of an artist... this bevy of sleepless nights. I sympathize with her on that note
and for the desires of a mother for their child. Beautiful.
