On the original track, suggested by sound engineer Alan Parsons , the Pink Floyd hired Clare Torry , a 25 -year -old singer who improvised a vocal for the music composed by Wright. They then ask this singer, who has just been introduced to them, to think of horror, of death, and to sing. After a few takes, she leaves and apologizes, convinced that she sang badly. But everyone in the studio is thrilled with her performance
Nobody does it better than Pink Floyd!! Best concert I've ever gone to was in the 70s in Phoenix their dark side of the moon tour!! I think her voice represents death..first fear, anger and acceptance...I could be wrong

I was never same after seeing this live @ The Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA. It ..was..insane.. A spiritual experience! life changing 🙌 Claire Torry sang the original . The band had her go into the sound ptoof studio booth as the band said "Let It RIP!" after she was given 2 or 3 questions... emotionally charged Deep, Deep soul's journey searching quest singing. The truth is she went in & sang and came out saying "I am sorry, I am so very sorry I'm embarrassed...I was all over the place...irrational". Apparently she felt mortified and not knowing her own power....what she expressed without a WORD makes this song 10 billion times a powerful connection between heaven and earth. The band said No to her plea to a possible "do-over" that the band couldn't believe that she could not recognize her qualities of such beauty that only she created for not just PF but for eternity. It's proof to never give up, and you CAN do it differently with authority and authenticity confidence & trust there is only love. Humans are their own worst critics... to sing is to embrace the divine love from which all things we came.. i feel it as an expressing of Angelc realm of divine feminine energy 💃🙏❤ it is what's coming from the Heart not the head. Thank you so much I am a huge fan of music and your channel.
Personally I like the difference between the 3 voices. Plus, they have to do this night after night. Being a drummer for 40 years who also did backing vocals, it's easy to let rip and go flat out the first night & have people pat you on the back only to find out that you overstretched your voice & struggle to repeat the same performance the following nights? Nobody can repeat clair torys performance, nor should they. It's a one-off performance that was captured on tape at that moment & blew everyones brains out.
The original singer sued Pink Floyd for partial writing credits for this song, since they told her to just make it up. She won the law suit. Edit: she won a settlement of the suit. Creating lyrics and melodies is in fact music writing, regardless as to how a reply tries to ignore reality. 😎
The suit never made it to court. Pink Floyd settled with her out of court for an undisclosed sum. If she'd actually been able to win that suit in court it would have set an AWFUL precedent. No band would EVER hire a studio musician or backup singer ever again if these folks could simply come back later and sue them for royalties. Studio musicians of all types improvise some or all of what they play and/or sing... it should NEVER mean that they somehow 'own' part of that track, or are entitled to more than the agreed fee for their studio work. That would be like a house painter painting your house for 2 thousand dollars... and then showing up years later after the sale of your home, and claiming that he was owed an additional twenty thousand... because he added that value to the house. It's not like Claire Tory was somehow cheated on this either. She was credited for her vocals on the track, and was paid her standard studio fees (which came to about a month's rent in London at the time) for a single hour of work. She basically became famous for this track. She didn't tour with them (her choice), but occasionally joined Floyd on stage to perform it (for which she was paid quite handsomely). More than 30 years later when she was retired from singing, she suddenly came back and sued. A lowdown backstabbing move on her part.
This was a backing singer joined Claire Tory, came from Spector, just wonderful, beautiful, pitch perfect!! What a voice’s , not a single note they can’t/don’t get! Love it/her♥️♥️♥️
Live Floyd does not disappoint. They are musicians of the highest order. They spare no expense to reproduce the full sonic experience of the albums, and then some. Full surround sound in the arenas and stadiums that they played brings out every note in the vocals, instruments and even all the background sound FX and whispers. Saw them in 88 in a 20,000 seat indoor arena. And again for Pulse in 94 at somewhere around 80 thousand seat old Soldier Field in Chicago. No difference in sound quality! It is truly a full sight and sound sensory experience.
Clare Torry is the genius behind this song. Her version is extraordinary, however this version breaks down the emotions better for me. Each woman used their own style to convey the emotions beautifully. So, nothing at all against the original, these ladies just touched my soul in a deeper way. Its been years since my husband died too soon. I'm still struggling with the acceptance part. I had read that acceptance brings joy. I'm still waiting...
My favorite LIVE version is from the "Delicate Sound of Thunder" concert video from the late 80s. Check it out! ua-cam.com/video/Ke9y_yfwJtg/v-deo.html
The blond is Sam Brown & i think the other two are the late Claudia Fontaine ( the last singer)....& Durga Mcbroom? Clare Torry did it in 2 & 1/2 takes in the studio....& walked out not sure the vocals would ever see the light of day.....but every time I've seen Pink Floyd 'live'....or a tribute band...this has been performed by 3 vocalists. Clare did the original. No lyrics & completely improvised.

Without looking at anyone else's comments first, just by listening to them sing, memory leads me to think that the one girl that they use on the album for this song is the first singer, the first girl making all the noises,😊 yeah that's the one I recognize, my ear picks out as the one on the original album.❤ Of course there is a margin of error.. I could be wrong!
Big gig in the sky original vocalist was Clare Torry. In this live show the first vocalist is Sam Brown.....she had a solo career a few years ago that did not take off, unfortunately. Peace back at ya Thanks.
Man, I don't think the singer's upset. The song is about dying. I think in the first part she's singing more about fear and refusing to die, the second part is about calming down and gradually coming to terms with it, and the last part is about catharsis and finally accepting your fate. At least that's how I feel...
Close, but I believe it is Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. I don't suppose it matters too much. This song just makes you feel something.
Any of them could do it all alone. Sam Brown has a fantastic voice and she was a back vocalist on the division bell studio album too . She is probably a better singer then Clare Torry.

Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Deff, and others are all best reviewed at live concerts. There is a rush from the atmosphere which adds that frisson to the music.
