Its widely regarded as a masterpiece and arguably the greatest rock album recorded to date. It spent over 13 years sitting in the US album charts and is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. So treat yourself for about 45 minutes:). Your ears will love you for the rest of your life.

It’s not a American band, they’re English. The ladies performing this song and hammering it into your soul were Claudia Fontaine, Durga McBroom and Sam Brown.
As others have said (more or less): as much as you like this, the original from the Dark Side of the Moon album, will freakin’ blow you away. I’m not criticizing you for choosing this version - it was very good - I’m just saying when you download this for your own collection, add it to your playlist, or what ever - you want the original studio version. Imagine, it took two great female vocalists, who probably rehearsed for weeks, topull off what Claire Torry pulled off, with no advance preparation, in TWO takes. They asked her to do a third and she told them she had given them her best, and man was she right. After they told her to make her voice sound like an instrument, she left later to silence, thinking she did not get ‘the job’ of appearing on the album. She later learned they were too stunned to speak. Ms Torry did not know her vocal made it onto the album until the album was in stores. Thank you so much for tackling this tune. I really enjoyed your entire reaction! Sooner or later you;re going to want to listen to the entire album, in order, with lyrics in hand. After that you may be so stunned you will need a couple weeks off :)
@@iDuckman Many years later she won a court case after which she was given a writing credit, enabling her to collect future royalties. I believe it also came with a settlement for the sins of the past. She has done a couple interesting interviews that can be found on YT.
I’m 65 and have listen to this song going on a thousand time. This version is by far my favorite. There is something about watching those 3 talented ladies pouring their heart out and being able to watch them just gives me chills!!
I thought EVERYONE knew about the Original version by Clare Torry being the benchmark. Whoever put you onto this version did you a disservice. Not that it's bad--it's just not in the same league as the original.
You are correct, sir! Bein a Deadhead, I normally recommend live versions of almost any tune by any band. This is one of the exceptions. The studio version was born of something that cannot be recreated.
Yes! This is the church choir version. The Clare Torry (Torre?) version of the original album after multiple takes was the 1960's style "acid rock" soothing and calming one's metaphysical mind into peace and tranquility as some of the other songs on Pink Floyd albums do. I think with Allen Parcen's project input of Clare Torry into Pink Floyd inspired their later entire space or future dreamy album "I Robot!" Played and orchestral Pink Floyd into Allan Parson's "I Robot" is more away from Pink Floyd's "heavy in heavy metal's" other music style orchestrated in their 1977 Animals and 1979 The Wall albums that pleasantly but with hard rock sounds satisfy a musical experience over the entire time of playing the albums.
Without reading all 825 comments, because.... not my reaction video: The story behind the original recording is one of absolute wonder and amazement at what can be accomplished with talent and timing. The singer came into the studio on a contract gig, with only a general concept of what kind of vocal contribution was needed. After a brief conversation with band members and studio sound check, Clare Torrey launched into the stunningly emotional and evocative inspiration for what is done in this version by not one, but THREE singers. they were great, (and I went to a Pulse tour concert) but still, any attempt will fall short of the original. I read that the band members were absolutely dumbstruck by what they had just recorded in the studio. Clare was of course paid for her SINGLE TAKE. She left the studio, wondering if she would get a call-back for revisions, corrections, editing. But no... Her fantastic interpretation and rendition was placed on the Dark Side Of The Moon album, in it's entirety, and just as she had expressed it. A miracle, a classic, a masterpiece in translation of psyche to human voice. "Extraordinary" doesn't say enough.
And to think that Clare Torrey did the original vocals 50 years ago was as much mind boggling then as it is today. I heard somewhere she was paid a mere $75 for her work and years later attempted to sue the band for the unexpected success of this song, and was sadly unsuccessful in her law suit.
This song is about this woman facing death, the stages she goes through in facing the end before she accepts and becomes peaceful, or so I have been told. The whole album is an epic journey! The woman who sang on the studio track version is a different woman and she will really blow you away!
Yep, woman singing here looks like Sam Brown. (Back-up singer on the pulse tour). Studio version is sung by Clair Torry. Sam Brown is however an excellent singer as it is. ua-cam.com/video/DWKwnfBtzXg/v-deo.html
I'm not arguing with anyone about anything but I saw an interview with Claire years ago and this solo was just a call in gig for her to make some money. She showed up, Roger and David gave her some rough parameters, played her the demo and told her to run with it. She did it in one take but the boys wanted her to do another take which she did but they ended up using the original anyway. No facing death or any of that other stuff from either her or the band. I think that's probably just some bullshit posted by someone who wants to sound important. Regardless, an OUTSTANDING performance nonetheless! One take, no autotune, no rehearsing ad nauseum, etc, etc.... Absolute pro!
@@dr.thrashfinger4915 Clare Torey actually did three takes. The first was rejected because she used words, which the band did not want. Clare cut off the third take mid song, saying she thought they had what they needed. She did not know anything about The Dark Side Of The Moon recording sessions. I don't think she even knew who Pink Floyd even was.
@@scottbc31h22 Like I said, I'm not here to argue with anyone. I'm simply going by what Claire Torry said HERSELF in an interview. I know that the entirety of humanity under 30 years old is triggered by anything even remotely NOT racist so that withstand, choose to believe whatever you wish. I simply ask that you deal with reality if you insist on commenting on public forums. Love and light to you 😇
The singer of the original version is called Clare Torry and she was contacted to record the song without using words but only by vocalizing. In an interview Clare stated that not even Pink Floyd had any idea how she was supposed to sing, so she decided to improvise in her own way. In 2004, Torry sued both Pink Floyd and EMI for missing royalties owed to the album The Dark Side of the Moon, claiming he also contributed artistically to the song The Great Gig in the Sky (originally attributed only to Richard Wright). In early 2005, the British High Court of Justice recognized the singer's reasons as valid and declared her co-owner of the song's copyright. All records released after 2005 therefore regularly report Torry/Wright as the songwriters. Clare is also very proud that she sang the whole song on her own, while in subsequent performances she was sung by three different singers. PS Dear Pink Floyd I love you madly, but Clare is right. ;)
Pink Floyd is ABSOLUTELY worth listening to pretty much everything they’ve made. I do still recommend listening to the original version of this song as well, it’s just as impactful and so deep! It goes with the theme of that album so well which is essentially about different stages of life. This song was said to be about someone fighting to let go and cross to the other side and then accepting that it was their time. So incredible and art at its finest is what Pink Floyd is. The fact they can draw out so much thought and emotion at the same time is so beautiful.
If you like Pink Floyd then I’m sure you’d like to listen to Dark Side Of The Moon in dvd audio 24 bit hi def 5.1 surround sound on a good 5.1 system, huge difference to 2.0 vinyl (Ear Candy)
I absolutely did cry listening to this song when I realized this is what my wife felt inside when her father passed. I believe it is a vocal expression of the seven stages of acceptance: shock; denial; anger; bargaining; depression; testing; acceptance. Words unnecessary.
I understand but it’s hard uploading the studio versions because of copyright issues and the video getting blocked and that’s why I kind of sway away from doing studio version videos from artist or bands because almost everything gets blocked
Check out the live version of this from the previous concert , A Momentary Lapse of Reason tour ( A delicate sound of thunder recording ) equally as beautiful
Sam Brown, daughter of Joe Brown, a 50/60s pop star still performing today. Often jammed and duetted on the ukulele with close friend George Harrison who gave Joe the ukulele as a present. Was given the honour of the last song at the Concert for George. Clare Torrey paid £30 for the DSOTM session, but settled for an undisclosed sum in 2015 with a credit on all future releases of the track
I'm not cryin! You're cryin! This is the definition of making you feel the emotions of the song without even one word! So powerful! So emotional! You won me over when you answered to the question, " How many Pink FLoyd videos you gonna do?" "ALL OF THEM!" Great job and love your honest, F what anybody thinks reactions lol
The version from the album, Dark Side of the Moon, is just as beautiful and much more haunting. That vocal was complete improvisation in the studio. A masterpiece!
Pink Floyd the best band that there ever was. I made sure to see them every time they toured the USA. This song is one of their very best. It is amazing to hear even after hearing it a thousand times. You aren't human if it doesn't make you feel alive. It has made me cry more than once. They make music like no other band has done before or since.
Studio recording is the most incredible performance taking into account the background of the band telling her not to use any words and to improvise with the chord changes. Amazing interpretation and sound she created is life changing.
Man, I was listening to this song on my way home from work tonight. I have seen Floyd 3 times and the lady back up singers earn their place on stage! Awesome Man!
The Dark Side Of The Moon debuted on Billboards Top 200 Albums Chart on March 17th, 1973 @ #95. It stayed on the charts for *736 weeks* until July, 1988
Hi Da Real, I'm so glad you have discovered Pink Floyd. No one should live on this earth without hearing this band. They are the conduit between the earth and the heavens. Their music is literally, divine. Everyone remembers hearing Dark Side of the Moon. Wish you Were Here is a stunning album. Welcome to the club, love! From the UK x
This footage is from the Pulse live album. The three singers are in order, Sam Brown, Durga McBroom and Claudia Fontaine. I saw this concert in three different venues and all were spectacular.
Sam Brown was a highly underrated singer that deserved more success than she had, I am biased though, I thought she was gorgeous when "Stop" came out. She was also a great character, she came to Australia and was on Hey Hey its Saturday and was constantly cracking jokes, good ones too. Her impersonation of a cat from the rear had everyone in tears.
Im at the age of 58 and i have been loving this band for my whole life. I was lucky to see 2 of there live tours. There is still alot of there music i haven't heard yet. Try some of there older music that is unlike anything most people can imagine.
Being a lifelong Pink Floyd fan, I have watched many reaction videos on their music. It is good and very heartwarming to see younger people appreciate this music as I do. Of all the reaction videos I have seen, this has to be the best reaction I have seen yet. Keep listening Adogg!!
@@MrObelisk2290 she did 2 takes. They said let's try one more. She started number 3 and stopped and said, "I think it's all there in the first one." And the album has first of two takes.
Amen A Ddogg to you doing them all. Pink is one of my all time favorite bands ever. So creative and soulful. This song is killer. This ladies solo will blow your socks OFF. Pink came up with an album that will live forever - Dark Side of the Moon. One of the best sellers ever. Parts of this song almost make you think you are in church. And the ladies's voices are as beautiful as they are. EPIC! This song does this to ALL of us.
A wonderful example of how you can put emotion into vocals and music without ever saying a word. It's not often that backup and session singers get a chance to shine like this.
I agree that Dark Side is the best album of all time. I also agree that Clare did an amazing job on the original. It’s stunning in every sense. The one thing I really enjoy about this version is how the three different singers impart such unique flavors into the song. And they did it live. What an experience. What other band gives the background singer(s) an entire song to showcase on??
I've heard many versions of this beauty.. All fantastic! But the very first one!! Original recording!! That's all I can say about that bro. Yeah we all had some sweaty eyes the first time we heard it to.. It was a sound and a feeling that just came into your body and took you away from all this for a few moments. Reminding us all where we came from, and shall return one fine day .. Hugely powerful, and loving tones that resonate with each one of us individually, completely different from each other but yet still connected.. It was definitely from the heavens.. To sit and write the music had to be a magical experience in itself.. Trial and error in this masterful creation of feelings into music, and then! returned back from music, into a feeling again.. Then you get to share it with the people.. Wow!! So , now you know why we all said it's the best song in the world.. You gotta check it out!! 😎✌️
My first major concert was Pink Floyd in 1987, I was not quite 9 yet, I have been to almost 2 dozen concerts since and NONE have compared to the experience of a Pink Floyd concert. Great to see people being introduced to the brilliance of Pink Floyd. Love from Canada💗
I think you would enjoy the Peter Frampton song Do you feel… from Frampton Comes Alive. It’s a super cool summer anthem great energy, great guitar, also chill to add to your driving playlist.
Great reaction! Try to find one of Pink Floyd's earliest albums 'Meddle.' I used to play it over the air when I was a DeeJay at my college radio station. (This was when Santana and Black Sabbath first emerged). P.S. Hubby and I saw Pink Floyd in concert 3 times! One time we 'inhaled'...🙂
As soul touching as this is, the original with Clair Torrey will make you feel you've reexperienced transition. This is a true masterpiece. There truly are no words .. is an understatement. Thank you Pink Floyd- you are untouchable.
Music written by Rick Wright for a movie which the director didn't like. Clare Torey called into the studio listen to it twice and was told just to sing it with no words. She left the studio with NO idea they like it. Heard on the radio going down the road. Sam Brown nailed it along with Durga McBroom and Claudia Fontaine. Check out some of the rest songs on 'Pulse", keep atlking ( intro by Stephen Hawkings), High Hopes, Hey you, Money, us and them. actually the whole concert.
This live version is awesome. I still love the album version best though. I heard it after I took 5 grams of magic mushrooms and it was a life-changing experience. It brought me to tears. This and Comfortably Numb are my two favourite Pink Floyd songs, and two of my favourite songs of all time.
🤣🍄🍄 oh boy do i agree with you. Sober Dark Side vs Munchin Dark Side completely different album. My picks are High Hopes Great Gig and Sorrow. Tbh it's easier to name the songs I don't like.
Founding member and band leader, Syd Barrett listened to an old 78rpm blues album put out by two black blues musicians from North Carolina. He was so impressed that he talked the other band members into changing the name of the band to honor them and their style. The were PINK Anderson and FLOYD Council. At first, they called themselves: "The Pink Floyd Sound". Later it was just "Pink Floyd". They were definitely the cerebral band of rock!
As good as this is, the studio version that’s on the album, sung by Clare Torrey is brilliant, singing the five stages of death without a word! Getting this album in 1973 and hearing this song for the first time, I was crying!! I wore the grooves out playing this whole album repeatedly!! Go down the hole and listen from beginning to end, all Pink Floyd records are meant to be listened to front to back. ☮️❤️
They took your breath away, without singing one word! The very same reaction I had the 1st time I heard it when it 1st hit the record stores. This sent me into the world of music at age 10. I'm now 59 and this album is still in my rotation .
Damn Adogg, so glad that you got to hear this track with the killer female vocals, originally sung by a little redhead named Claire Torry. Trust me brother, you've got to cover Pink Floyd's Dogs next. It's from the Animals album, and it will blow you away.✌️🎵
You should listen to this song performed at the "delicate sound of thunder" tour. For me it is the best version of this song, besides claire torry's original whitch will always be the best forever. In this one all three voices went right through my soul. That is te song they must play at my funeral. Look it up (gonna be hard, they block almost everything), listen and be awestruck....
I agree with you. I saw the Delicate Sound of Thunder tour, by far the best Live tour recording. With the exception of Astronomy Domine and One of These Days on the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. Delicate tour was absolutely incredible. Best Concert ever, hands down.
Claire Torry is amazing. The entire album is a huge story and this part is improvised. She was singing about the process of dying. The entire album is freaking magical. 🔥
The first singer is the great Sam Brown . Sadly shes lost her singing voice and is now a ukulele teacher/player. Second voice is the equally great Durga McBroom . The third vocalist was Claudia Fontaine who has a lovely voice too !
I have a different take on this song, I believe she is singing all of life, from her own birth, to giving birth, to death. And of course, as good as this is, you should also listen to the studio version, which was performed by just one woman, who gave a performance that really can not be repeated as it was completely spontaneous.
Lol, I had a roommate that didn't care for them. When I talked him into giving Dark Side a try, when we got to this point he said she sounded like she stepped on a nail and was in pain. I told him that aside from the nail part he was on the right track and then explained why, he just sniffed and rolled his eyes. Dude missed out on a lot of great music
this song is the "softly spoken magic spell" of the previous song; a transition from birth to death. And while this version is excellent, it doesn't hold a candle to the original... Now if ya want freaky, there are "several species of small furry animals gathered in a cave and grooving with a pict." also by Pink Floyd
The best "No words used" song ever... this is my favorite Album and i used to play them in my eight track sterio both in my car and in my room at home since i was 16 . I turn 65 this oct.8 2022. These Ladies are putting into raw emotion, the transition of leaving life, the stages of Death, Denial, Anger, Fear, Resistance and finally Acceptance, it gets you in Heart, Spirit and Soul, I believe that if you watch and listen to the entire Pulse concert, you will indeed enjoy that journey, All Pink Floyd is best listened to with headphones or ear buds, the ultimate journey !!
Everybody talks about the vocals which are incredible!!!!! The song is about the experience of passing on. Every time I hear it tears fall down my face.

Actually there are 3 women singing this version
Yes, and sadly, Claire was paid a session musicians wage for a single session.
@@iDuckman Many years later she won a court case after which she was given a writing credit, enabling her to collect future royalties. I believe it also came with a settlement for the sins of the past. She has done a couple interesting interviews that can be found on YT.
@@tonydelapa1911 Yes, I heard that, but I didn't remember the details. So a measure of justice was done after all. ⚖ Thanks for the update.
And Pink Floyd wasn't going to give her any credit, or royalties. Jerks.
Absolutely, no disrespect to this version but you need to listen to the original.
Amen and amen.
I watched a doco where she talks about the work she put in the full stretch.
Amazing voice.
Absolutely
They need the 3 singers because of the toll it has upon the singer on top of the rest of the concert. Clare said as much in her interviews.
This song is about this woman facing death, the stages she goes through in facing the end before she accepts and becomes peaceful, or so I have been told. The whole album is an epic journey! The woman who sang on the studio track version is a different woman and she will really blow you away!
Yeah l agree, l wondered if it was the same woman but she didn't do the piece the justice it deserves. The original blows this away by light years.
Yep, woman singing here looks like Sam Brown. (Back-up singer on the pulse tour). Studio version is sung by Clair Torry.
Sam Brown is however an excellent singer as it is.

Love and light to you 😇
Clare Torry can NEVER EVER BE STOOD NEXT TOO, she is this song
this girl does a helluva job trying to fill big shoes, credit where its due.
but there was no way she could match that epic original
YES!!! Keep that Pink Floyd comin'! 🌈💗
I just love seeing this reaction to such a stellar vocal performance....still gives me goosebumps every time i hear it
The singer of the original version is called Clare Torry and she was contacted to record the song without using words but only by vocalizing.
PS
Dear Pink Floyd I love you madly, but Clare is right. ;)
@Bjorn Maxson Well, thanks.
Love your reaction! There is NOTHING done by Pink Floyd that sucks. Everything they do is beyond awesome xx Favourite group ever.
Great song, and this girl is good! But, Torrenis better.
And Amy Lynn is pretty good too….
This was beautiful! As others have said, the studio version is even more amazing if you can believe that!
I understand but it’s hard uploading the studio versions because of copyright issues and the video getting blocked and that’s why I kind of sway away from doing studio version videos from artist or bands because almost everything gets blocked
@@darealadogg never known Floyd to block anyone 👍
@@darealadogg Even if you can't upload it give yourself the treat and listen to it yourself. These women did a tremendous job here though!
Check out the live version of this from the previous concert , A Momentary Lapse of Reason tour ( A delicate sound of thunder recording ) equally as beautiful
This is the first time hearing this rendition, original is better!
I love Pink Floyd from Way Back!! Their music can just take you away to another peaceful place ♡
Oh my god! The emotions these women sang went straight to my heart. This was so beautiful. Thank you!
When you´re the greatest band in the known universe, you have the best background-singers ...
Eventually everyone has one :)
Always makes me cry… so powerful and moving… angels vocalizing❤️ gets me every single time I watch this performance 🥲
This is a masterpiece and these girls are awesome, don't get me wrong...but Clare did it in ONE take all by herself.
Took Clare multiple take but was groundbreaking.
@@MrObelisk2290 no
@@MrObelisk2290 she did 2 takes. They said let's try one more. She started number 3 and stopped and said, "I think it's all there in the first one." And the album has first of two takes.
The story I heard was 2 takes, but any number under 12 seems remarkable to me.....
Simply look up "great gig in the sky singer" and you'll find her giving interview telling the story.
I never tire of hearing this track, live recording, or the original on Vinyl, But my greatest thrill was hearing it live...
Animals
😎✌️
To see them live in concert was a truly life changing experience.
No auto tune there! This is pure talent, pure vocals. We had this thing called music back in those days.
The studio track was performed by Clair Torrey. The singers on this live version is Sam Brown, Durga McBroom, and Claudia Fontayne.
That song will hit you that way every time!! I've been playing it for 51 years. The Pulse concert version for 30 years
Music written by Rick Wright for a movie which the director didn't like.
I've been listening to their music for about 50 years and I still have the same reaction... friggen goosebumps....
I almost cried seeing the joy on your face, and the beauty of their voices, and the magnificence of each instrument!
Her name is Sam Brown. She has a few albums of her own. She has an incredible voice. Check her videos out.
Her single hit"stop" I have about 3 copies on vinyl
Yes yes yes, you MUST listen to Dogs, and have the lyrics at hand
Do yourself a favor and listen to the whole Animals album.
That's the meaning of singing your soul out 🎸 absolutely astounding
That is Sam Brown. See her sing Horse to Water on the Concert for George DVD. Great singer and performer.
ABSOLUTELY!! Check her out singing "STOP". SUPER VOICE.👍🏼Love her on Concert for George Harrison 🔥
Claire Torry is amazing. The entire album is a huge story and this part is improvised. She was singing about the process of dying. The entire album is freaking magical. 🔥
I AM crying! So freakin beautiful!!! Love that you're diggin' it at the same level!
The first singer is the great Sam Brown . Sadly shes lost her singing voice and is now a ukulele teacher/player. Second voice is the equally great Durga McBroom . The third vocalist was Claudia Fontaine who has a lovely voice too !
Thanks. What a shame for Sam Brown! 😢

Sad that lost Claudia in 2018 at the age of 57 😢
@@HughShower i didn't know Claudia Fontaine had passed on . May her memory ever be honoured
i have been listening to this since it first came out and it still bring chills to me no matter who is singing that part
I have a different take on this song, I believe she is singing all of life, from her own birth, to giving birth, to death. And of course, as good as this is, you should also listen to the studio version, which was performed by just one woman, who gave a performance that really can not be repeated as it was completely spontaneous.
I was at that concert 😍 gives me goosebumps, I was in ICU for a while got all the Drs and nurses and other staff into Floyd with this song 😍
Who doesn’t like Pink Floyd! Wow what a voice.
My friend, as a 70 year old rock lover, I can't tell you how happy I am that you absolutely fell in love with Pink Floyd.
this song is the "softly spoken magic spell" of the previous song; a transition from birth to death.
Still love to rock out to the whole album with my headphones. I also love watching you and others discover them and a few other favorites that are from my youth and enjoy them, i know, as much as i do. New subscriber...keep on truckin....
The original was way better but I can only imaging hearing this live at a concert would make the crowd freeze in awe
It does.

HUGE Pink Floyd fan here ! seen them 4 times in concert, my kids grew up being huge fans also, Pink Floyd is an experience, the best head music anywhere, at any time.
Been awhile!!! Thanks for your review. YES all the Ladies here can sing. Been listening to this song for decades and still bring tears to my eyes. Yes sir it does.
That’s exactly right! Can you even imagine just how beyond great the praise music shall be in Heaven?!!!

I watched your reaction now twice.....what a song. one of tghe best songs ever heard.....no words full of emotions. Awesome
Everybody talks about the vocals which are incredible!!!!! The song is about the experience of passing on. Every time I hear it tears fall down my face.
And you can only imagine what the experience is like live in concert. Had the privilege of seeing them only twice in Dallas in the mid 80's
Tears to my eyes. So soulful and heartfelt.
My brother, love your reaction to The Floyd and Sam Brown. I went to see them on this tour at The Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam in 1994 when I was 21 years old. Listening to the band and those girls sing, what an ethereal experience, One of the best nights of my life!! Take care and never stop listening to Pink Floyd. ;))
I’m addicted to your reactions. We all feel like crying when we listen to this song, even if it’s for the thousandth time! Stay blessed brother💜🎵🙏💜
